About this ManualThis manual discusses how to install, congure, and operate the ExtronMGP 464 Series and the MGP 462xi Series multi-graphic processors.
Throughout this manual, the terms MGP and processor are usedinterchangeably to reer to all models o the products.
About the MGP Series Multi-Graphic ProcessorsThe MGP Series are multi-window, high resolution graphics processors that candisplay multiple video sources on a single screen in picture-in-picture or picture-
by-picture format. The MGPs combine high performance graphics scaling withcustomizable picture-in-picture unctionality.
The MGP 464 can display up to four windows; the MGP 462xi can display one ortwo. The MGPs accept RGB, HDTV, component, S-video, and composite videosignals on 4 fully-congurable inputs and 15 virtual inputs; and have 1 scaledoutput. The processors can switch among inputs, and provide a ull range opicture controls or each window. Congurations can be saved as presets andrecalled at need.
The ollowing models are available:
MGP 464/MGP 462xi Standard models with BNC input connectors thataccept RGB, component video, S-video, or composite video
MGP 464 DI/MGP 462xi DI An MGP 464/462xi with a DVI input cardinstalled, providing four DVI input connectors.
MGP 464 HD-SDI/MGP 462xi HD-SDI An MGP 464/462xi with twoHD-SDI inputs and two DVI inputs.
All versions can be controlled remotely via the serial interfaces using the sExtronSimple Instruction Set (SIS) commands or the Windows-based control sotware,or via an Ethernet LAN using the MGPs embedded Web pages, SIS commands, or
the Windows-based control software.
FeaturesMultiple windows Up to four (MGP 464) or two (MGP 462xi) windows can
be shown on a single display simultaneously, allowing multiple video andcomputer sources to be viewed at once.
Inputs The MGP Series have four fully congurable video inputs, which acceptRGB, HDTV, component, S-video, and composite video signals. In additionto these four congurable inputs, the MGP 464/462xi DI models have fourDVI inputs and the MGP 464/462xi HD-SDI have two HD-SDI and two DVIinputs.
DVI-D Background input A DVI input is provided on all models as a means todisplay live video from a DVI source as a background.
Virtual inputs 15 virtual inputs can be congured through sotware to acceptstandard denition component video, S-video, and composite video.
Output All MGP Series models have one scaled output, available both on a set ofve BNC connectors for RGB and on a DVI-I connector for DVI.
Picture controls Picture controls allow you to adjust the size, position,brightness, contrast, color, tint, detail, and zoom or each window.

Window and input presets Window presets save sizing, positioning, andpriority inormation. Input presets save input signal type inormation andpicture control settings.
Window transition eects 6 types of window transition effects (22 differenteects altogether) seamlessly mute and unmute (close and open) the4 windows.
Freeze control Freeze control reezes (locks) a window to the current image.
3:2 pulldown detection or NTSC video and 2:2 lm detection or PAL Theseadvanced lm mode processing eatures help maximize image detail andsharpness or video sources that originated rom lm.
When lm is converted to NTSC video, the lm frame rate has to be matchedto the video rame rate in a process called 3:2 pulldown. Jaggies and otherimage artiacts can result i conventional deinterlacing techniques are used onlm-source video.
The MGPs advanced lm mode processing recognizes signals that originated
from lm. The MGP then applies video processing algorithms that optimizethe conversion o video made in the 3:2 pulldown process. This results inrichly detailed images with sharply dened lines.
A similar process, 2:2 lm detection, is used or PAL lm-source video.
Background image capture, save, and recall Background Capture enables youto capture and save the image currently on the output screen. You can thenrecall the captured image and display it as a background later.
Auto ImageAuto Image automatically sizes, centers, and optimizes the imageto the scaled output rate, lling the window.
Remote operation The MGP can be operated remotely via the serial interfacesusing the Windows-based control software or SIS commands, or via theEthernet interface using the embedded Web pages, SIS commands, or the
Windows-based control software.Rack mounting The 2U high and full rack wide metal enclosure can be rack
mounted using the included rack/through-desk mounting brackets.
Front panel security lockout (executive mode) Locks the ront panel controls toprevent accidental changes to the units settings.
RGB and video scaling All sources are scaled to a single output rate.

RELIMINARY
Installation OverviewThe MGP Series processor can be connected to as many as 19 input devicessimultaneously, and up to two output devices. Follow these steps to install theMGP:
1Install the four rubber feet on the bottom of the MGP, or mount the unit usingthe supplied rack mounting brackets. See Mounting the MGP, below.
2Turn o power to the input and output devices and remove the power cordsrom them.
3Connect the input sources to the MGPs BNC, DVI, and/or HD-SDI inputconnectors. See aInputs 1 through 4 or bVirtual inputs (inputs 5through 19)under Rear Panel Features, later in this chapter.
For the MGP 464/462xi DI, connect up to four input sources to the DVI-Iand/or the BNC connectors as desired. For the MGP 464/462xi HD-SDI,connect up to four input sources to the two HD-SDI connectors, the two DVI-Iconnectors, and/or the four BNC connectors, in any desired combination.
(Sources can be connected to DVI/HD-SDI and RGB connectors at the sametime; the MGP processes the signal for which the input is congured.)
4Attach an output device to the RGBHV/YUV BNC output connector and/orto the DVI-I output connector.
N Analog is not available on this DVI connector.
5If the MGP will be connected to a computer or to a host controller for remoteoperation, connect an RS-232 cable from the host to the processors 9-pin DRS-232/422 connector on the rear panel or to the front panel 2.5 mm TRSCong port. See cRS-232/422 connector under Rear Panel Features,later in this chapter, or jCong port, in chapter 3, Operations.
6 If desired, connect an active LAN Ethernet cable to the RJ-45 port on theMGPs rear panel to establish a link to the network. See dLAN connector,later in this chapter.
7 Plug the MGP, input devices, and output devices into a grounded AC source,and power on all devices.
Mounting the MGP
Tabletop useFour self-adhesive rubber feet are included with the MGP. For tabletop use, attachone oot to each corner o the bottom side o the unit and place the unit in thedesired location.
Rack mounting
UL guidelines for rack mountingThe following Underwriters Laboratories (UL) guidelines pertain to the installationof the MGP into a rack:
Elevated operating ambient temperature I the equipment is installed ina closed or multi-unit rack assembly, the operating ambient temperature othe rack environment may be greater than room ambient. Thereore, considerinstalling the equipment in an environment compatible with the maximumambient temperature (Tma) specied by the manuacturer.
Reduced air fow Install the equipment in the rack so that the amount o airfow required or sae operation o the equipment is not compromised.

Mechanical loading Mount the equipment in the rack so that unevenmechanical loading does not create a hazardous condition.
Circuit overloading When connecting the equipment to the supplycircuit, consider the connection o the equipment to the supply circuit and
the eect that circuit overloading might have on overcurrent protection andsupply wiring. Consider equipment nameplate ratings when addressing thisconcern.
Reliable earthing (grounding) Maintain reliable grounding o rack-mounted equipment. Pay particular attention to supply connections otherthan direct connections to the branch circuit (such as the use o power strips).
Rack mounting procedureFor optional rack mounting, do not install the rubber feet. Mount the MGP in therack as ollows:
1. Attach the included rack/through-desk mounting brackets (part #70-155-01)to the unit, using eight o the machine screws supplied with the mounting kit.
(See the illustration below.)2. Insert the unit into the rack and align the holes in the mounting brackets with
the holes in the rack. Use four machine screws to attach the brackets to therack.

Installing or Replacing Button LabelsThe button caps are pre-labeled for your convenience by default. However, you canreplace them with button labels that you create, using the Button-Label Generatoror other button label sotware.
The button assembly consists o a clear lens cap, the button label, and a whitediuser. (See the illustrations at right and below.)
Remove the button assembly from the MGP as follows:
1. Make any desired button labels and cut them out.
2. Remove the button assembly by inserting a small,fat-bladed screwdriver between the buttons baseand the diuser to gently pry the button assemblyo the button plunger, as shown in the illustrationat right (b).
3. Locate the small corner notch on the lens cap, andslide the screwdriver between the lens cap and the
diuser. (See c in the illustration below.)4. Using a rotating motion of the screwdriver, carefully
pry the two pieces apart. (See d in the illustrationbelow.)

5. Lit out the transparent square label that you want to replace, being careulnot to damage the circuits beneath it. You may need to use the smallscrewdriver to gently pry the label out.
6. Insert one o the new labels you created in step 1 into the clear button cap,align the white backing plate with the cap, and rmly snap it into place.
7. Gently, but rmly, press the reassembled button into place on the MGP frontpanel.
8. Repeat steps 1 through 7 as needed to relabel other buttons.

Virtual input connector conguration examples
You can congure these virtual inputs or the desired signal types usingthe Windows-based control software (see the control software help le), SIScommands (see chapter 4, Software Conguration and Control), or the Webpages (see chapter 5, HTML Conguration and Control). They cannot becongured via the ront panel.
N When you congure a virtual input as S-video (using two input connectors)or component video (using three input connectors), pressing any one o itsequivalent buttons selects the input. For example, i you plug an S-video sourceinto input connectors 8 and 9, pressing either the 8 or the 9 input button selectsthat input.

You can set up and operate the MGP by using:

A computer, a touch screen panel, or any other device that can send and receive
serial communications through either serial port or through the LAN port.Settings can be adjusted through the host computer using Extrons SimpleInstruction Set (SIS) or the Windows-based control software.

1 Freeze button Press this button to reeze the image in the currently selectedwindow on the display. The image remains rozen until the Freeze button ispressed again, or a dierent input is selected.
2 RGB/HD/Video Inputs selection buttons Press these buttons to select ullycongurable inputs 1 through 4. On the MGP 464/462xi DI models, these
buttons can also select the four DVI inputs, depending on the units inputconguration. On the MGP 464/462xi HD-SDI, input buttons 1 and 2 canselect the HD-SDI inputs and buttons 3 and 4 can select the DVI inputs. When an input is selected, pressing its button again mutes the input. Theinputs signal turns o and the window closes. The button fashes while theinput remains muted. To unmute the input, press its button again.
When an input is muted or unmuted, the window in which it was displayedopens or closes with the currently selected window transition eect. TheWindow Conguration menu lets you select a transition effect (e.g., dissolve,curtain, or square wipe) with which the window will open or close (thedeault eect is cut). See Window Conguration menu, later in this chapter.
3 Virtual video input selection buttons Press these buttons to select inputs5 through 19. These inputs can be congured via remote control to acceptstandard denition component video, S-video, or composite video signalsonly.
These inputs are referred to as virtual inputs because they can becongured as a variety o combinations o component, S-video, and compositevideo through SIS commands, the Windows-based control software, or theMGP 464/462xi Web pages. They cannot be congured via the front panel.
The virtual input buttons are arranged in ve columns o three buttons each,refecting the arrangement o the virtual input connectors on the rear panel.
Like the buttons or the our ully congurable inputs, the virtual inputbuttons light when pressed. (Repeated pressing o an virtual input buttontoggles between muting and unmuting the input.) When you press an input
button connected to a component video source, all three buttons in its columnlight. I you press a button connected to an S-video source, the top two
buttons in the column light. When a composite video source is selected, onlyone button lights.
N Only one input can be selected in each column.
4 Window Select buttons Press these buttons to select, activate, or adjust
one of the windows. While a window is selected, all picture controls areassociated with it. The MGP 464 models have four window selection buttons;the MGP 462xi models have two.
5 WindowPreset buttons Press the Preset Recall/Save and Enter buttons tosave or recall window presets. See Window Presets, later in this chapter, formore inormation.
6 Picture control buttons Press these buttons to adjust window and imagesize, position, brightness, range o dark and light values (contrast), color,tint, detail, and zoom (magniy/reduce). See Picture Controls, later in thischapter, for further information.
7 LCD screen This screen displays messages, menu inormation, and yourselections. See Menus, Conguration, and Adjustments, later in this
chapter, or more inormation.8 Adjust knobs Turn these horizontal and vertical Adjust knobs to adjust

10 Cong port This conguration port on a 2.5 mm TRS connector is analternative to the RS-232/422 port on the MGP rear panel; however, unlike therear panel port, it supports only RS-232. (For a description o the rear panelRS-232/422 port, see Rear Panel Features in chapter 2, Installation).

Input SelectionThe MGP front panel contains a set of four input buttons that enable you to selectRGB, HD, and/or video (component, S-video, or composite) inputs for windows 1through 4. It also contains 15 virtual input buttons that enable you to select onlyvideo inputs.
Selecting an inputBefore you can select an input, you must rst select a window, as follows:
1. Press the Window Select button for the window in which you want the inputto be displayed.
2. Press the button or the input you want to display.
For example: I you have a computer connected to input 1 and you want to displaythe computers output in window 4, press Window Select button 4, then press Input
button 1.
Muting an inputTo mute the currently selected input (turn o its signal and close the window on thedisplay), press its Input button again. The buttons backlight blinks continuously,which indicates that the input is muted.
When an input is muted or unmuted, the currently selected transition effect (cut,wipe, or dissolve), i any, is used to close or open the window on the output display.See Window effect submenu in the Window Conguration menu section, laterin this chapter, or inormation on transition eects.
To unmute the input, press its button again. The buttons backlight stops fashingand returns to a steady light.
Menus, Conguration, and AdjustmentsThe MGPs menus enable you to congure the processor. The menu navigation
buttons (Menu and Next) are located to the lower-let o the LCD screen. Pressthese buttons to cycle through the available menu and submenu options.
Menu system overviewThe MGPs menu system consists of a main menu with nine options (menus). Eacho these nine menus has a set o submenus, which enable you to make desiredadjustments. (See the fow diagram on page 3-8.)
Using the menusAccess the dierent levels o menus by pressing the Menu and Next buttons andturning the Adjust knobs as ollows:
1. Main menu To access the Main menu, press the Menu (let) button, locatedbelow and to the let o the LCD screen. The rst Main menu option (AutoImage) is displayed on the screen.
2. Main menu options (menus) By repeatedly pressing the Menu button, youcycle through the Main menu options. Press the Menu button repeatedly untilthe desired menu is displayed.
3. Submenu options When the Main menu item that you want to congure isdisplayed on the LCD screen, press the Next button (at the right o the Menu
button) to cycle through the displayed menus submenu options.

4. Adjustments The third level o menu selections consists o sub-menuoptions that are selected by turning the horizontal ([) and vertical ({)Adjust knobs. When you have displayed the submenu option that you wantto congure, turn the knobs clockwise or counterclockwise to display the
parameters available or the selected option.5. Implementation To save and implement the adjustments you have
selected, do one o the ollowing:
Press Next to display another submenu option to adjust.
Press Menu repeatedly until the Exit menu screen appears, then pressNext.
Do nothing more, and wait until the LCD screen returns to the defaultcycle.
Your adjustments remain in eect until you change them or reset the unit to actorydefaults (see Resetting, later in this chapter).
N The menus time out and the deault cycle displays ater 20 seconds o inactivity;
however, any selections you made with the Adjust knobs are saved and remain ineect.

Auto Image menuThe Auto Image menu causes the MGP to perform an automatic image adjustmentin the selected window. Auto Image measures where the active area starts andstops, and adjusts input sampling accordingly, so that the image lls the window.
When an input is connected, the processor measures the sync frequencies ofthe incoming video source and sets the active image area, total image area, andsampling frequency according to a table stored on the MGP. If an unknown inputis connected to the MGP, the processor measures and estimates the resolution ofthe incoming video. I the processors estimate proves inaccurate, the Auto Imageunction makes measurements to more accurately set up the input sampling.

Input Conguration menuThe Input Conguration menu allows you to select a video signal type or eacho the our ully congurable inputs. DVI BCKGD2RATE Resolution and clock o the incoming background input1 An HDTV 1080p rate specically tailored to Sharp Proessional displays (such as
the G655u).2 When DVI BCKGD is selected as the output resolution/rate, the MGP uses
the incoming DVI background input resolution and clock as the output rate.The sync type and polarity options are available for the RGB output while thebackground timings are used. If available, the output of the MGP is locked to theDVI background rate until you select a different resolution or disconnect the DVI
background input.
By default, the resolution provided in the Extended Display IdenticationData (EDID) is the last selected factory rate. To manually set the resolutioninformation provided in the EDID data, see the Set EDID information SIScommand on page 4-10.
Output Type submenuRotate either the horizontal Adjust ([) or the vertical Adjust ({) knob to selectthe output signal type required by the display device. Available signal types are
RGBHV, RGSb, RGBS, YUV bi-level and YUV tri-level. The default is RGBHV.
Sync Polarity submenuThe display device may require a particular combination of horizontal (H) andvertical (V) sync signal polarities. Window Priority submenuThe Window Priority submenu allows you to set how the windows will overlapone another or stack on the display. For example, the window with priority 1 isdisplayed in ront o all the other windows. I the top priority window is sized to
ll the screen, the other windows are not visible.
By default, the Window Priority submenu displays the numbers of the windows inorder, rom let to right, with window 1 having rst priority. To change a windowspriority,
1. Select a window by rotating the vertical Adjust ({) knob to move the anglebrackets on the LCD screen to the number o the window whose priority levelyou want to change.
2. Rotate the horizontal Adjust ([) knob to move the bracketed windownumber to the desired priority position. For example, i you want window 2to display in ront o all the other windows (priority 1), move all the wayto the let, ollowing the letter F on the LCD screen.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 as desired or each additional window whose priorityyou want to change.
Window Border submenusUse these submenus (one for each window) to select colored borders for thewindows. Turn either Adjust knob to display the available options: Red, Green,Blue, White, Magenta, Cyan, Yellow, and Black. You can also select Off, whichspecies no border. The defaults are Red for window 1, Green for window 2, Bluefor window 3, and Magenta for window 4.

Window Effect submenuUse this submenu to select a transition effect for the MGP to use when muting andunmuting windows. To select a transition eect,
1. Press the Menu button repeatedly until Window Conguration is displayedon the LCD screen.
2. Press the Next button repeatedly until Window Effect is displayed.
3. Rotate either the horizontal Adjust ([) or the vertical Adjust knob ({) toselect a transition eect.
Available effects
Cut A cut instantly mutes or unmutes the window. The eect duration does notapply.
Dissolve A dissolve causes the window to ade in or out.

Standard wipe A standard wipe causes the new window to appear to unrollover the other one. The new window can roll rom the top, bottom, let, orright.
A standard wipe can have a sot (uzzy) or a hard (sharp) leading edge.
Center wipe A center wipe causes the new window to appear to unroll over the
other one in one o two ways: In from the top and bottom edges to the center of the window
Out from the center to the top and bottom edges of the window
A center wipe can have a sot (uzzy) or a hard (sharp) leading edge.
Square wipe A square wipe causes the new window to appear to unroll over theother one in one o two ways:
In from the top, bottom, right, and left edges to the center of thewindow
Out from the center to the four edges of the window
This eect creates a square shaped transition.
A square wipe can have a sot (uzzy) or a hard (sharp) leading edge.
