Alwaysswitchoffthecameraandtheflashgunbeforemountingor removingthe
flashgun.
Mountingthe flashgun: Fastenthecamerabracketwiththebracketscrewtothecamerastripodbush.Formedium-
andlarge-formatcameraswerecommendtheuseofthe 202/4 bracket(optionalaccessory).
Insertthecamerabracketintotherapid-actioncatchoftheholderblockuntilitisaudibly
engaged(fig. 1b).

2.3 Battery replacement
Pressthetwolockingkeysofthebatteryhousing,andpu lloutoftheflashgun(fig. 2a).To
returnthebatteryhousingpressthetwolockingkeystogetherandpressintothehand le-
mountgripoftheflashgununtilitaudiblyengages.
2.3.1 Exchangingthebatteries
Presstogetherthesmoothlockingkeysofthedismantledbatteryhousing(onlywithBAT-ver-sion,otherwiseoptionalextra)andremovethelid(fig. 2b).Insertnewbatteriesinconformity
withthepolaritysymbolsindicatedinthebaseofthehousing.Returnthelidandlockinagain.
Spent batteriesmust notbe thrown into the domesticwaste! Help keep the
environmentcleananddiscardspentbatteriesatcorrespondingcollectingpoints!
ThebatteryhousingmustnotbefittedwithNiCadbatteries!Thecontactsofthebat-
teryhousingareonlyintendedforalkalinemanganesebatteries.
ThelowerresistanceofNiCadbatteriesmeansthatmorecurrentcanflow,andthiscan
damagetheflashgun.TheNiCadBatteryPack45-40hasspecialcontactswhichdonotallowtheflowofhighcurrents.

2.3.2 Operationwiththebatterypack(onlywithNC-version,otherwiseoptionalextra)
TheNiCadbatteryshouldbechargedfor 5 hoursbeforeitisusedforthefirsttime.TheNiCad
batterycanbechargedwithintheflashgunorexternally.
Warning:TheflashgunmustNOTbeswitchedonwhilethebatteryisbeingcharged
withintheflashgun!TheNiCadbatteryisdischargediftherecycletimeafteraflashexceeds 60 seconds.
Adjustthecorrectmainsvoltageonthechargerpriortocharging.Thevoltageselector(fig. 3a)
islocatednexttotheplugandcanbeadjustedwithasmallscrewdriver.
Theconnectionforthecharger(fig. 3b)isinthebaseoftheNiCadbattery.Theadjoiningpilot
lamplightsupwhilechargingisinprogress.
ThechargingtimeforacompletelyexhaustedNiCadbatteryis 5 hours.Apartlydischarged
NiCadbatteryrequiresacorrespondinglydiminishedchargingtime.
Toidentifyanexhaustedbattery:Pushtheknurledslideinthebatterylidtotheblackmark.Toidentifyachargedbattery:Pushtheknurledslideinthebatterylidtothewhitemark.
TheNicadbatterycanalsobechargedwiththein-carchargerA 16 (optionalaccessory).

2.3.3 Operationwiththemainsunit
Themecablitzcanbepowereddirectlyfromawalloutletinconjunctionwiththemainsunits
N 22 orN 23 (optionalaccessories).Theconnectionfortheabovemainsunitsislocatedinthe
sideofthehandle-mountgrip.
Duringoperationwiththemainsunittheflashgunmustbeswitchedoffwiththemainswitch.
Toavoidthermaloverloading,flashseriesinvolvingmorethan30flashesatmaximum
lightoutputmustbebasedonthefollowingrecyclingtimes:
- Incontinuousmode:30secondsaftereachfull-powerflash.
- Inintermittentmode:Amaximumof10flasheswithshortestrecyclingtime,
followedbyapauseofatleast4minutes.
2.4 Switchingtheflashgunonandoff
The flashgun isswitchedonwith themainswitch (fig. 4).The flashgun ispermanently
switchedonwhentheswitchispushedtothetopposition,andtheoperatinglightshines.Push
themainswitchtothebottompositiontoswitchofftheflashgun.

Intheautomaticflashmodethephotosensormeasuresthelightreflectedfromthesubject.The
flashiscutoffassoonassufficientlighthasbeenemittedforcorrectexposure.
Inthismannerthere isnoneedtocalculateandsetanewaperturewhenthedistance is
changed,providedthatthesubjectremainswithintheindicatedautomaticflashrange.

other,werecommendanapertureoff/8.
Waitforflashreadiness-thegreenLEDlightsup.
Thesubjectshouldbewithinthemiddlethirdofthedistancerange. Thisgivesthe
electroniccontrolsufficientscopeforcompensationshouldthisbenecessary.
Thereisacertainmeasureofoverlapbetweentheindividualautomaticapertures.Asaresult
ofthisoverlapitisalwayspossibletoplacethesubjectwithinthemiddlethirdoftherange.
CAUTIONwithzoomlenses!
Duetotheirdesigntheycancausealossoflightintheorderofuptoonef-stop.
Furthermore,theeffectiveaperturecanalsovary,dependingupontheadjusted
focal length. Thismustbecompensatedbymanuallycorrecting theaperture
settingontheflashgun!

Photosshotwithfullfrontalflashareeasilyrecognizablebytheirharsh,denseshadows.This
isoftenassociatedwithasharpdropoflightfromtheforegroundtothebackground.
Thisphenomenoncanbeavoidedwithbouncedflash becausethediffusedlightwillproduce
asoftanduniformrenditionofboththesubjectandthebackground.Forthispurposethemain
reflectoristurnedinsuchamannerthattheflashisbouncedbackfromasuitablereflective
surface(e.g.ceil ingorwallsofaroom).Forthisreasonthemainreflectorcanbeturnedverticallyandhorizontally.Thefollowingare
theverticallock-inpositionsforbouncedflash: 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 (simplytiltthereflectortotherequiredangle)
Theheadcanbeswivelledhorizontallytotheleftandrightby 180,andlocksintopositionat
90 and 180.
Whenswivellingthereflectorvertically,itisessentialtoensurethatitisturnedby
asufficientlywideanglesothatdirectlightcannolongerfallonthesubject.
Therefore,alwaystiltthereflectortoatleastthe60 lock-inposition.
Thediffusedlightbouncedbackfromthereflectivesurfacesresultsinasoftilluminationofthe
subject.
Thereflectingsurfacemustbewhiteoraneutralcolour,anditmustnotbestructured(e.g.
woodenbeams in the ceil ing)as thiscould castshadows.Forcoloureffectsjustselect
reflectivesurfacesintherequiredcolour.

Thetwoestablishedvaluesforapertureandshutterspeedcanbesetonthecamerabecause
thecamerasshutterspeedisslowerthanthecamerasflashsynchspeed.
Tomaintainabalancedrangeofhighlights,forinstanceinordertoretainthecharacteroftheshadows,itisadvisabletoselecttheautomaticapertureontheflashgunonesettinglowerthan
theapertureadjustedonthecamera.Intheaboveexamplethecamerawasadjustedtof/8.
Consequently,weadviseyoutosetanapertureoff/5.6 ontheflashgun.
Whenshootingintothelight,ensurethatthebacklightdoesnotshinedirectlyonto
thesensorasthiswillconfusetheflashgunselectronics!
