Colour Temperature (K) – Measure in degrees of Kelvin. This is a way of describing the appearance of the light i.e. “warm” (low colour temperature 3000K or below) or “cool” (higher colour temperature 4000K and above). Note a high colour temperature does not necessarily mean high colour rendering.
Colour Rendering (Ra) – This is a means of describing how well a light source renders colours. For general areas a colour rendering of Ra80 is adequate. For critical areas Ra90 and above should be specified.
Illuminance (Lux) – A measure of light falling on a surface. An examination lamp may quote a lux level but this is dependent on the distance from the light to the subject. So when looking at the specification the distance that the lux level is quoted should be noted. Normally it is at 1 metre unless otherwise stated.
Luminance (cd/m2) – A measure of the brightness of a light source or luminaire. Some medical lights and luminaires used in wards have luminance limits in certain angles to ensure patients do not suffer from glare.
Spring Balanced Arm – This is an adjustable arm that supports a medical luminaire that is self-balancing, so it does not rely on friction or tightening nuts to hold the arm in place.
Jac Jacobsen (1901-1996) was in his thirties when he launched Luxo L-1. He soon realized that his spring balanced arm would carry a variety of different luminaires for various purposes, including illuminated magnifiers. The philosophy and knowledge from the development of the L-1 is being maintained in our modern products. They all have perfect balance, and careful ergonomics built into them.

Lighting in Bedded Areas
Patient wards are one of the most challenging areas to light well, as the considerations of the patient as well as the staff need to be taken into account. These areas are occupied 24 hours a day and lighting needs to cater for patient comfort and relaxation, doctor and nurse treatment, night time safety and observation, as well as catering for mains failure and emergencies.
Depending on the design on the ward either combination of the A55W wall mounted uplight/ downlight can be used to illuminate the area and provide light on the bed.
Alternative recessed or surface lighting with combination of individual wall mounted Carelite G2 luminaires can provide 300 lux on the bed together with controlled dimmed reading illumination and night watch facility also meets bedside examination and treatment light level requirement.

Carelite Gen 2It is the use of modern LED light sources that has made it possible to reduce the size of the new lamp head, compared with the original. Still, the integrated ergonomic handle remains an important feature, enabling the patient to direct the light exactly where required with minimal effort. The switch is positional exactly where the thumb will find it when the hand grabs the handle. This makes operation easy even for patients with disabilities. Carelite is fully dimmable.
Integrated night-watchCarelite is equipped with night-watch, an observation light for the nurse to check on the patient.

Standby lighting is classified as Grade A or Grade B in line with the requirements of Health Technical Memorandum HTM2011 (34). It is required in certain parts of the hospital to enable essentials activities to be carried out in the event of a mains failure. Hospitals normally work in two standards of illuminance. In critical areas such as operating theatres, delivery rooms and high dependency units, the quality of standby lighting should equal, or near equal (90+%), to the normal mains lighting level; this is classified as Grade A. Non-critical but important areas will required lighting to a reduced level, generally 50% of the normal mains level; this is classified as Grade B.
The two standard of standby lighting recommended are: - Grade A: lighting that is of a quality that equals, or nearly equals (i.e. 90+%),
that provided the normal mains lighting. In additional certain Grade A classified areas, such as operating theatres, must have sustained lighting so that no outage is experienced.
- Grade B: lighting that is at a reduced level, i.e. between 50% of normal mains level. The exact level should be determined by the task activity and its ability to be carried out properly.
Note: In hospitals and nursing homes, selective switching or dimming of lamps will reduce the overall light output below that of its “installed” level. At such times, this lower lighting level describes the task requirement. Therefore the standby lighting, if achieved during this period (whether Grade A or Grade B ad defined above), should relate to the lower level condition.

Competing for patients
Following a comprehensive reform package in 2006, universal medical care in the Netherlands is achieved not through a pre-dominantly government-run system, but through an insurance market that aims to be patient-focused and competitive. As a result, Dutch hospitals compete for patients not only on medical quality, but also on service and ambience.
Dutch hospitals compete on medical quality, service and ambience
The 2006 heAlThcAre reForms were the product of nearly two decades of discussions, and were intro-duced in response to a number of problems that will be recognizable in many countries: A two-tier system of private health insurance for the rich and state co-verage for the rest; inefficient and complex bureau-cracy; lengthy waiting lists and lack of patient focus.
Following the 2006 reforms, the government only acts as regulator of the healthcare system. It no longer manages the majority of funds, nor does it control volumes, prices or productive capacity. Instead, the quality of care is driven by patient demand. The scheme is paid for through a mix of insurance funds,
taxes and employer contributions. health insurance is now mandatory for all Dutch citizens above the age of 18.
Competing for patients – and fundshospitals, like other health-related institutions in the Net-herlands, are predominantly owned and operated by locally controlled, private not-for-profit foundations. In order to attract patients – and the money that comes with the pati-ent – hospitals focus on quality, choice and efficiency. This includes service elements such as hotel-standard rooms and choice of meals; pleasant and decorative surroundings with quality furnishings and excellent lighting solutions. every
