Todays business l eaders have to take into
account a broader range of issues than
ever before, including their responsibility
to stakeholders and society at large.
Therefore eective business leadership
increasingly requires the ability to exerciseleadership in the wider community.
UQ Business School offers MBA students the opportunityto work with community organisations through the Social

It is alsoan opportunity to give something back to the community, andnd out about the challenges facing the not for prot sector.
Projects have included working with pearl farmers in Fiji, tosee how a new economic model could help in subsistencefarming, and developing a business strategy to launch BuffedShoe Shine, a social franchise initiative designed to providemarginalised men with an opportunity to run their own business.
Another project is the Yalari Horizons leadership camp, hostedby UQ Business School, which brings indigenous high schoolstudents together with celebrities and business leaders to share
success stories and inspire them to aim high.
While participation in SEEP is voluntary, the benets to both thecommunity and the students make it well worthwhile.
By helping local farmers to model and plantheir business, and avoid potential pitfalls,we were able to make a real difference ina local community.
