Matthew 6:9-13 (NKJV)
9 In this manner, therefore, pray:Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.10 Your kingdom come.Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.11 Give us this day our daily bread.12 And forgive us our debts,
Matthew 6:9-13 (NKJV)
As we forgive our debtors.13 And do not lead us into temptation,But deliver us from the evil one.For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
SOM: Lord, Teach Us To Pray We continue our study of the Sermon
on the Mount found in Matthew 5-7
We find ourselves in chapter 6
Last week we looked at Jesus’ instruction on prayer in verses 5-8
We noticed similarities between those words and the previous 4 verses
SOM: Lord, Teach Us To Pray If we are going to learn about
prayer, there is no one better to teach us than Christ
Here in chapter 6, Jesus teaches on prayer
Tonight we look at the prayer He offers up as what is termed the “Model Prayer”
SOM: Lord, Teach Us To Pray 1. In this manner…
Jesus begins by saying, “In this manner, therefore, pray”
Jesus never says we must pray this exact prayer
Praying a rehearsed prayer all the time would seem like a contradiction to v. 7
SOM: Lord, Teach Us To Pray 1. In this manner…
This prayer isn’t for Christ, but for our sakes; Jesus would not need to ask for forgiveness
What Jesus is doing is giving us an example of praying for things that we have need of, both physically and spiritually
His prayer was both brief and to the point
SOM: Lord, Teach Us To Pray 2. Praise to God
Christ begins the actual prayer by addressing “Our Father in heaven”
Jesus has given this picture of God as a Father on more than one occasion (7:11)
We see God as a Father to us, but also one who is our heavenly Father
SOM: Lord, Teach Us To Pray 2. Praise to God
“Hallowed be Your name”
Hallowed means to be holy, sanctified, set apart from any evil, wicked or worldly thing
The very name of God is holy and precious and should not be thought of as common or used in a common way or common phrase
SOM: Lord, Teach Us To Pray 2. Praise to God
We need to praise the very name of God
We need to express to God that we hold His very name in high regards
We need to express to God that we do not count His name as anything common, but rather holy
SOM: Lord, Teach Us To Pray 3. Things of God
Not only is the prayer addressed to the holiness of God and His name, but it begins otherwise with things that concern God
Jesus seemed to prioritize this prayer, putting God first, as He should be
The kingdom has now come (Acts 2) so this part of the prayer is obsolete
SOM: Lord, Teach Us To Pray 3. Things of God
Christ prayed that God’s will be done on earth, just as it is being done in heaven
God’s will revolves around the desire for all men to be saved from their sins (I Tim. 2:4)
Anything we do to make this happen for ourselves and others is the working His will
SOM: Lord, Teach Us To Pray 3. Things of God
Not only should we pray that God’s will is done, but we should do our part to see His will be done
If we follow His word, then we know we are living according to His will (I Thess. 4:3; 5:18)
We should put God first in our prayer life!
SOM: Lord, Teach Us To Pray 4. Physical Needs
The fact that we have physical needs is certainly known by God
We learn here that it is acceptable to pray for the things we have need of
Notice the prayer is for, “Give us this day our daily bread”
SOM: Lord, Teach Us To Pray 4. Physical Needs
Later on we see that we are not to worry about the necessities of life (6:25-34)
Food is a necessity, so God knows that we have need of it
The request is for daily bread, not an abundance or even luxury foods (Prov. 30:7-9)
SOM: Lord, Teach Us To Pray 5. Spiritual Needs
This prayer also provides help for our spiritual needs as well
“And forgive us our debts”
We certainly have things we need forgiveness of (Rom. 3:23; I Jn. 1:8,10)
It is proper to pray for forgiveness
SOM: Lord, Teach Us To Pray 5. Spiritual Needs
“As we forgive our debtors”
This may be the most difficult part of this prayer
It is expected that we are doing that first and foremost
It’s the part we can control
