Maths Investigation
Ranfurly Primary has decided to tile an area in the Art
room. The area to be tiled is 4 metres long and 3 metres
wide. You have been chosen to design the tile pattern and to find out how much it will
cost to have Toby the Tiler lay the tiles.
Make a square metre with butcher’s paper. Mark out on the ground the space that is to be tiled and find out the area of the space. (Use chalk or masking tape)
Draw a plan of the space to be tiled. Design your tile pattern using two-dimensional shapes. (You may use pattern blocks to help you.) Try to use more than one shape to make your pattern more interesting.
Draw your pattern on your square metre of butcher’s paper. Copy it into your books – you may use your netbooks to draw your design.
Find out how many tiles you will need to tile the whole area.
Show this information in a table:◦the different shapes of tiles you require

Toby the Tiler can lay 4 tiles in 5 minutes. He charges $60 per
hour.1. Calculate how much time Toby requires to complete the job.
2. Calculate the labour costs for Toby.
3. Find the total cost of the materials and the labour.
