NOVEMBER 27, 2016 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
For us Catholics, the new Liturgical Year commences with the first
Sunday of Advent. In this new Liturgical Year, the Church not
only wishes to indicate the beginning of a period, but the beginning
of a renewed commitment to the faith by all those who follow
Christ, the Lord.
This time of prayer and path of penance that is so powerful, rich
and intense, endeavors to give us a renewed impetus to truly
welcome the message of the One who was incarnated for us. In
fact, the entire liturgy of the Advent Season, will spur us to an
awakening in our Christian life and will put us in a “vigilant”
disposition, to wait for Our Lord Jesus who is coming:
O Come, O Come, Emmanuel !!

NOVEMBER 27, 2016 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
MARY, STAR OF THE SEA PARISH
November 17, 2016
My dear Sisters and Brothers,
Grace and Peace in our Lord!
You may have already received an envelope with tickets to help support our Peace & Social Justice
Ministry in the purchasing of water filter kits. Our Youth and the Peace & Social Justice Ministries
are on a continuing mission to provide water filtration systems for humanitarian aid and for poor
communities and villages that don’t have a clean water resource.
The filtration system prevents life threatening illnesses by removing harmful bacteria. Each filter
costs $30.00 and provides an average of one million gallons of clean water per system for ten years.
As we mentioned, this filtration system creates a long-lasting sustainable source of clean water for a
family’s daily drinking, cooking and cleaning needs, thus improving the sanitation and health of the
the whole family. Last summer, Mary, Star of the Sea was able to provide filters to Indonesia,
Uganda and Ethiopia.
I deeply appreciate your initial support to our Parish’s undertaking. However, the letter you received
may have caused confusion and some expressed that it looked like an imposition to donate. It was not
our intention and I apologize if you have felt that way.
Kindly drop the letter with the tickets in the offertory basket when you come to Church, or return/
mail it to our Parish office. However, if you desire to continue supporting this effort, you may give
any amount and send it to our Parish office.
Thank you so much for your kind understanding.
May our good Lord continue to bless you and your dear ones.
In our Bread of Life,
Fr. Francisco C. de los Reyes, SSS
Pastor
(Editor’s Note: In the event that you missed this letter which was inserted in last week’s bulletin, we
are reprinting it here with the intention of exercising due diligence, hoping that everyone has access to
this information.)

NOVEMBER 27, 2016 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
E N J O Y A D V E N T !!
Only a saint could maintain the patience needed to confront Christmas shopping, Christmas stress,
and Christmas credit card bills. That’s too bad because something else gets overlooked in the rush—
and that’s Advent. So here are a few brief ways to enjoy yourself over the next few weeks.
First of all, get to know Advent. This liturgical season is a time of waiting -- something that we all do:
we’re waiting for some good news, for a better job, or for our lives to improve. Advent is a time when
we think about waiting for God, so it fits in perfectly with our natural human longings. “Come thou
long expected Jesus,” as the hymn goes. Advent is also the time of beautiful Scripture readings, like
those from the Book of Isaiah. “The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice
and blossom.” These are readings to give all of us hope! And Advent is the season for beloved church
traditions, including the Advent wreath, which can easily be translated into home rituals.
Second, cut back on the craziness of Christmas preparations. Here are just a
few suggestions: send cards only to close friends and family, and go only to the
most essential holiday gatherings. Does that sound selfish? It’s just the
opposite! It will give you time to spend with those you really love, and more
time to spend in prayer.
Maybe Advent is when you can really settle into your spiritual life, by finding
joy in the season and less stress in Christmas. In short, Advent may be the time
you’ve been waiting for!

“BABY SHOWER FOR JESUS”
Sunday, December 11, 2016, 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm, Social Hall
Potluck - Sign-up Sheet at the Entrance to the Church
Bring a Baby Gift in the Name of Jesus
The Mothers and Babies Ministry, in partnership with the MSOS Charismatic Faith
Group, invites everyone to an Advent “Baby Shower for Jesus” to assist needy mothers and
infants. Needed items include new baby blankets, quilts, clothing, diapers, etc. If you are unable to attend the
shower, but wish to donate a gift, you may place it, at any convenient time, in the “Manger for Jesus” at the
Church entrance. Items need not be gift wrapped. You may also bring items to the Rectory during the week.
Donations will be contributed to two Pro Life Centers: The Pearson Pregnancy Center and The Mary Jane
Home. It is here that women and teens receive free compassionate counseling during a crisis pregnancy, and
where they are highly encouraged to respect LIFE. If you prefer to make a monetary donation, please make
checks out to “Mary, Star of the Sea Parish,” and include “Mothers & Babies” on the memo line.
If you would like to help in any way with the Baby Shower, i.e., organizing, delivering the gifts or helping
educate others in getting the word out about our Ministry, please call Yvonne Izumi at 396-3411.
Mahalo and God bless you for your generosity!

"HALLOWEEN FUN!"
As part of its Halloween activities, the ELC converted its front office hallway and
offices into a "Haunted House." Each of the administrative offices was decorated to
represent a particular theme that gave viewers an opportunity to "peek" into the
"windows" of Halloween fun!
The ELC kitchen staff also got involved! Hundreds of children, staff and parents from
both the ELC and Star of the Sea Schools participated in the Halloween parade.

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS:
FIRST READING: Isaiah 2:1-5 -- This reading focuses on Isaiah’s
prophecies speaking of God’s coming judgment and future divine rule
over God’s people and all nations will finally recognize the Lord as the
one true source of life.
SECOND READING: Romans 13:11-14 -- Today’s reading
provides the reason for Christians to live according to the
Commandment to love one’s neighbor as oneself: the final fulfillment of
God’s plan for salvation is near at hand.
GOSPEL: Matthew 24:37-44 -- Today’s Gospel stresses that the time
of God’s coming is unknown; therefore, believers must always be
prepared. As the great flood caught people unawares, the coming of the
Son of Man will also arrive in God’s own time. Matthew speaks of
Christ’s coming to complete God’s final rule, which began in His
ministry. For that coming, Christians must always be prepared.
