What is Port State Control

Port State Control (PSC) is part of aninternational effort to identify andeliminate substandard ships.
International and local rules apply
Local PSC / Coast Guard will take actionagainst ships that do not in comply withlaws or regulations.
If serious defects are found during aninspection an expanded examination willbe carried out.
Inspections may result in investigationsof violations of laws, some of which carrycriminal sanctions for the crew.
The penalties for safety, security orenvironmental violations can be lesssevere.

Case: At the end of June 2017 MAERSK was subject of a cyber attack which caused major problems to operations and terminals worldwideWhat Happened1. A computer virus, called GoldenEye or
Petya, began its spread on Tuesday 27th
June 17 in Ukraine and affectedcompanies in dozens of countries.
2. The virus entered into system as anemploy answered an unidentified mail byclicking.
Results1. Several port terminals stopped operations.
Dry cargo could not be delivered and nocontainer would be received.
2. Several IT systems were shut down3. MAERSK paid almost $300m as cost of
operations suspension and cargo damages
