Again this year a group of Nobles traveled to Grand Junc-
tion to join with the Western Colorado Shrine Club for the
IHOP National Pancake Day. As you know this is the only
Colorado IHOP that is currently supporting Shriners Hospitals
for Children. We had a great time working side-by-side with
the WCSC and we are happy to report that the event resulted in
$6,355 collected for the Salt Lake City Hospital.
We are looking forward to the beginning of parade season
for El Jebel as we participate in the St Patrick’s Day Parade on
March 17. El Jebel will have a prominent spot in the first half
of the parade and we are expecting a large turnout from our
parade units. Take this opportunity to invite non-parade units
to come out and ride on Long John. After the parade, El Jebel
will be hosting a St Patrick’s Day Party at Highlands Temple.
The fun will begin at 1:30 pm and we strongly encourage you
to invite lodge brothers, friends and Shriners that haven’t par-
ticipated in a while to this party.
On Saturday March 31, 2018, we will honor the Ladies of
El Jebel at the annual Ladies Luncheon. Everyone knows that
Susan Boles is the rock that keeps our office running smoothly.
But did you know that this year will be Susan’s 40th year with
El Jebel? Ladies, come to the luncheon to help Susan celebrate
her anniversary.
Nobles, SAVE THE DATE, Saturday, April 7, 2018. We
will be hosting the 2018 Sportsmen’s Raffle Kickoff Party.
Your Fundraising Committee will be sharing all the news and
developments for this year’s Raffle and introduce many excit-
ing features that are being added to make this event bigger than
ever. Following the Kickoff Party, El Jebel will host a light
lunch, so bring your Lady and find out how you can help make
the Sportsmen’s Raffle a great success! More information
about the Kickoff Party will be coming out soon.
Membership is the name of the game to keep El Jebel
moving forward. The Spring Ceremonial is just around the
corner and we need petitions. The Ceremonial is scheduled for
April 14, 2018. Nobles we all have lodge brothers that need to
become Shriners and now is the time to encourage them to
make that move. Membership is a group effort and we all have
a responsibility to introduce our Brothers to the fun, fellowship
and Masonic brotherly love that is shared by all Shriners.

Recorder Report
Travel, Fun and Celebration
February was a very full month for your El Jebel Tem-
ple! The month opened for the Temple with a trip to
Grand Junction for our annual meeting and installation
with the Western Colorado Shrine Club (WCSC). Arriv-
ing there about one in the afternoon, we were greeted by
Club members and given our room assignments. Once
settled, we gathered in the hotel meeting room.
Prior to the Potentate’s meeting, WCSC opened for
their Ceremonial with an Invocation and Pledge of Alle-
giance. The WCSC then led an excellent Shrine Cere-
monial to initiate a new Shrine Noble, Brother Kenneth
La Joy. The Ceremonial Team was: Potentate - Mike
Brisco, Chief Rabban - Emmit Palmer, Assistant Rabban
- David Krough, High Priest & Prophet - Gary Brown,
Oriental Guide - Gary Weiszbrod, and Orator - Walt
Wright.
The work was performed to perfection and thus the
newly initiated Noble and all in attendance thoroughly
enjoyed his initiation as was evidence by Noble Ken La
Joy’s acceptance speech that included his sincere thanks
to the West Colorado Shrine Club as well as the Shriners
Hospitals for Children, since he was a Shriners Child.
After the Ceremonial, the Potentate opened the annual
WCSC visitation meeting with thanks to WCSC Nobles,
stating that he always enjoys coming the WCSC with a
busload of Nobles from the Temple. The Potentate then
asked the Divan to speak. Illustrious Rich emphasized
that he and the Divan were there at the pleasure of the
WCSC, and he would like each Divan member to speak
to the WCSC with information derived from their indi-
vidual positions.
The Chief Rabban gave details concerning the annual
Sportsmen’s Raffle with emphasis on selling tickets. If
each Temple Noble would sell two books however they
see fit to do, we would have no problem with meeting
our goal. He then emphasized that when you have ques-
tions or need information, contact your Divan member
rather than calling the office for Susan. This way you
will get timely responses and all will stay informed.
The High Priest & Prophet stated that membership and
retention is “his game” but it is also every members
“game” as well. All Nobles need to be actively involved
in not only recruiting new Nobles but also to be active in
retaining them as active members. This may be accom-
plished by making sure every Noble is actively involved
in some aspect of the Clubs and the Temple. He is estab-
lishing active Blue Lodge Ambassadors that will speak
about the Shrine and our Temple, Units and Clubs as a
method of gaining new members. Volunteers desiring to
accomplish this task, please contact Ron Williamson.
The Oriental Guide is working with and in support of
our Shriners Hospitals. All Temple meetings will have
some form of recognition and information concerning the
Hospitals as well as an article in every Red Fez. Please
include Hospital information in all your meetings as well.
There are many kinds of printed material available for
your use. Just contact Ken Jones and whatever you need
will be provided. Go online to see what is available at no
cost to you. Supplies are available from Shriners Interna-
tional, Shriners Hospitals for Children and El Jebel Tem-
ple.
The Recorder mentioned that his duty is to serve you
and all Units and Clubs so that you have everything you
need to be successful. Contact Jay Bobick, at any time.
The best method is e-mail, [email protected]. By-
Laws are an important part of any organization but more
especially ours. By-Laws should be reviewed and revised
as needed at least every 3 to 5 years. If your Club has not
updated your By-Laws recently, take a look to see what
may be required. Shriners International now has produced
By-Laws formats for each Temple entity. They are simple
to use, designed to just fill in the blanks. If a portion does
not apply, delete it. Contact Jay, and he will e-mail the
format for your Club to you.
The Captain of the Guard referenced the Sportsmen’s
Raffle, working with a Grand Junction store to allow Raf-
fle tickets to be sold at the store. Perry Mittler will keep
you informed as to progress. The Raffle tickets will be
available in about 3 weeks. Contact Perry for your sup-
ply. We will be using Gift Cards for prizes rather than
actual fire arm vouchers. This worked well last year and
will continue this year. These cards are valid at Bass Pro
and Cabela’s Sport Stores. Just take it to the desk of ei-
ther store. Also, Shriners International is selling Henry
“Shriners” Rifles as a fundraiser. El Jebel has obtained
one and is selling 300 tickets as its fundraiser. Get a tick-
et now at this meeting to be the winner. Tickets are $20
that will generate a $5,000 profit for Temple funding.
The Potentate followed with stating we are here to
serve and to foster fun and fellowship. His was looking
forward to tonight’s dinner and installation of WCSC Of-
ficers and Board of Directors.

MARCH
Jeffco Shrine Club
By Jim Cram
President Herb has set Wednesday June 20th for the An-
nual Picnic at Fairmont Park. This is one of our best so-
cials of the year and includes Brothers BBQ, horse shoes,
cotton candy, beer and pop.
Congratulations to Wendell and Lois Martin who will
celebrate their 65th Wedding Anniversary on March 27th.
Wendell received some good news regarding the tumor on
his forehead. It was surgically removed and the skin graft
is healing nicely so no need to return to the doctor for fur-
ther treatment.
Jack Russell announced the winner of the Super Bowl
contest. The game was won by the Philadelphia Eagles
over the New England Patriots in a close, thrilling game.
Jack won 1st place, Jim Cram was 2nd, and Susan Boles
was 3rd. Others participating who picked the Eagles to
win were Beckie Jewell, Herb and Lorna Schillereff, Bob
and Ginger McCullough, and Dan Kamunen. Those who
thought the Patriots would repeat were Minnie and Smoky
Yoritomo, Gary Jewell, Mead Abbott, Dee Jacobson, Lois
and Wendell Martin, Glenn Moore, Jo Ann Cram Joselyn,
Sonja Kamunen, Diane White and Lance Barron.

Sandblasters
of El Jebel
By Claude Akridge
The Sandblasters of El Jebel meet on the last Wednesday
of each month at the Golden Corral Restaurant at 11:30
AM located in the River Front shopping complex South
Santa Fe Drive @ West Hampden. At our Jan 31st meeting
President Randy Penn opened the meeting with our usual
pledge of allegiance and prayer. He gave the update on the
winter trip to the Arizona Golf Club in Mesa, AZ. 29
sandblasters, wives and guests have signed up for the trip,
no doubt it will be great trip scheduled for Mar 7th thru
Mar 14th. If you have any last minute questions give
Randy a call (303-635-0357).
It was reported that Judy Cosens had a hip replacment
and was doing great. She was out walking a few days later.
Judy we are happy it went well for you and hope to see
you soon. Also, PP Jack Patten had a knee replacement
and is doing fine. Jack we will see you soon on the golf
course when spring comes. Sweet swinging Lee MacDon-
ald has had some shoulder and back problems but says he
expects to be back swinging by spring. It was good to see
Jerry Human had recovered from a bout of pneumonia and
was at the meeting.
Our Divan Rep. Rich Silver gave us updates on all of the
coming events for El Jebel Shrine. Several events are com-
ing this year. Let's support them.
Secretary Dan says the Discount Golf Books that were
not available for the January meeting will be available at
our February 28th meeting. Guests are welcome. Come
join us for lunch. We are a fun group.
Legion of Honor
by Don Phelps
At the January meeting Charles Stevens,
Commander installed the 2018 officers with the Legion of
Honor ceremony. This in accordance with the Internation-
al Legion of Honor by laws. Joe Kemp, our Divan Rep.
performed the Shrine part of the installation. After the
installation, Past Commander Chuck Stevens requested
permission to join the Past Commander's Club. After re-
viewing his performance for the 2017 year he was accept-
ed into the club. The business meeting was conducted by
our new commander, PC Ed Richards. There were several
items for Joe Kemp to take back to the Divan. Our March
meeting will be on March 27th at Black Hawk Lodge. If
you are interested in coming call me 303-471-2481.

Well over 70 Nobles, Ladies and family members came
for great camaraderie, new and long-time members having
fun together and celebrating with those “valentines” rec-
ognized as special guests.
Yes, there were dignitaries present! Past Potentates
Illustrious Sirs, Amer Plaisted, Tony Dattilo Matt Raia,
Larry Clark and Rich Silver. Also present (not previously
mentioned) was the Worshipful Grand Junior Stewart,
Scottish Rite Valley of Denver Secretary, and York Rite
Right Eminent Grand Recorder Matt Raia. Rounding out
the list was Noble Greg Rindone, Past Shriners Interna-
tional Chaplain.
After the Potentate welcomed all in attendance, he called
on the High Priest & Prophet who discussed our fundrais-
ing events for 2018 and asked all to plan their participa-
tion to ensure success throughout the year. Our Chief
Rabban spoke about our Sportsmen’s Raffle and Craft
Fair, giving details for each. He reminded all Nobles of
our responsibilities to sell Sportsmen’s Raffle tickets and
we should be recruiting vendors for the Craft Fair. The
more the merrier, producing greater funds for the Temple.
At which point, our Assistant Rabban stepped up and
wished Bobby Marner a very sincere “Happy Birthday”
and presented him with a cake to celebrate. Everyone
joined in singing Happy Birthday. This was extremely
interesting as Bobby’s birthday is not until July! There is
something going on between those two, but you have to
ask them for the answer.
The entertainment for the day was marvelous. Megan
McGuire, a Shriners Hospital child and accomplished
singer, gave a rendition of Valentine related songs. Her
voice with so much enthusiasm and emotion enthralled the
audience. She then had her father accompany her on the
guitar and her brother, who also has a fine voice, sang du-
ets with Megan. One could not adequately express what a
great time we all had listening to Megan and her family.
I, for one, will be looking to see Megan in professional
roles as a singeing performer.
As you may glean from the length of this article, your
Potentate and Divan are dedicated to making 2018 the
year full of fun and fellowship for all Nobles, their ladies,
family and friends. Watch the Red Fez and your social
media for the many events to come as the year progresses.
Finally, remember the event is not truly complete without
Ill. Rich then outlined things we need to do this
year to assure the Temple, Units and Clubs are successful;
Financial Report Filing (Reports to IRS); Accountability,
both ways; Full transparency; and looking forward to
WCSC joining Stated Meeting by Telecast that will allow
WCSC to participate in Temple business and voting. No-
ble Bill Brassette is your Temple contact. Work with Bill,
David and Fred to accomplish your tasks. We all need to
be a Team working together.
The day concluded with an excellent hotel dinner
and continuing camaraderie followed by the Potentate in-
stalling the officers listed above and the WCSC making
their annual awards and presentations.
Upon arriving back to the Temple, we prepared to cele-
brate again at the Temple Super Bowl Party that Sunday
afternoon. With an open invitation to anyone wishing to
watch the game and “wine and dine” Temple quickly
filled with those supporting both teams. Many brought
food and drink to share supplemented by the good works
of Bill Schwartz who also prepared everything for the par-
ty. Folks were fully involved well before the game start-
ed. Needless to expand, a large contingency of Nobles,
family and friends watched with anticipation for their
team on our two giant screens at each end of the hall. If
you were not there, you missed a great party.
To round out the month’s festivities, in celebration of
Valentine’s Day, the Potentate elected to have our Febru-
ary Family Meeting on a Sunday afternoon rather than the
usual Monday evening in the El Jebel Auditorium. The
room was expertly decorated with hearts and candies for
all to enjoy. The food was outstanding with so many
choices there isn’t space here to list everything. We had
brunch, snacks, candies, desserts, drinks and libations for
all ages to enjoy.

We have held two luncheon meetings so far this year and
it seems to be working. Unit members like the daylight
and not having to drive in night rush hour traffic which is
getting worse and worse so it seems. Coming up for our
first parade is the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade March 17, as
soon as El Jebel knows where they will be placed and
what time to be there information will be sent out to all
the Units. Don’t forget the after party that will be held at
Highlands Lodge 3550 North Federal and don’t forget to
make your reservations, RSVP to El Jebel’s office. An-
other event that the ladies don’t want to miss is El Jebel’s
Ladies Luncheon and they will be celebrating Susan
Boles 40th Anniversary with El Jebel. This will be held
March 31 at El Jebel.

Our February meeting was moved from the tenth to the
seventeenth because of snow. We had eighteen people
coming on the tenth but only fourteen could come on the
seventeenth. We are celebrating Valentine's Day late. We
have a social hour at 4:30 and dinner at 5:30. I haven't got
the information for the March meeting yet.
On April 29th we are going to Johnstown to see Man of

and have a good time. If you would like more information

El Jebel Clowns
By Swede “Cuddles” Nelson
After the Clown Costume and Makeup are on,
A NEW Person Shows up.
An interesting phenomenon occurs for many
clowns when they participate in their clown activi-
ties. It is a transformation of their personality for
many (not all) individuals when they get into the per-
sona of their clown character.
This is how it works: I'll use a hypothetical
clown persona or character as an example; I'll call
him "Butch." When Clown John Noble gets his
makeup completed and then gets his costume squared
away, he experiences a transformation within himself
and becomes "Butch." I'll explain further: You see,
Brother John Noble is an introvert, not outgoing at
all. But when his costume and makeup are complet-
ed, "Butch" shows up! (Clown) Brother Noble be-
comes an entirely different guy. He's having a great
time! He's flamboyant and hugging every kid he
sees! His smile matches the kids' smiles. He's hav-
ing the time of his life. One guy nudges his buddy
and says, "That can't be John Noble!"
One of the speakers in our Clown Kollege
was just that type of an individual. He described
himself as normally quiet, even shy; he could be a
wallflower without any problem at all. THEN the
makeup goes on and the costume is all completed.
He laughed and told us that he becomes something
like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Because of his great
makeup, he is difficult to recognize, and because of
his change in behavior, he is really difficult to recog-
nize.
My point? Some of you know somebody
(you?) who thinks they are too shy to be a clown.
Not true! Get into your clown persona! You can be
anybody you want, and YOU can have the time of
YOUR life!
The Feb 13 meeting was started with lunch at the New
York Deli Restaurant in Denver. Following lunch, the
group convened to El Jebel for the business meeting and a
program with 14 members and guests present. A Pledge
was given. Guests Don & Connie Strand and Ron &
Robyn Williamson, Ron our Divan Rep., were introduced.
Minutes of the previous meeting and the current treasurer
report were approved as published. A thank note from
Susan Boles was read for the Club’s financial support
with her “Fire Disaster.” Ken Behrens mentioned that his
wife was having some serious health problem; Jim Taylor
mentioned that he just had surgery on his left eye.
Ron Williamson, our Divan Rep, gave a brief report on
the happenings at El Jebel: Feb 26 trip to Grand Junction
to support IHOP and Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake,
March 12 stated meeting-Family Night & Hospital report;
March 31 Ladies Luncheon.
A discussion followed about Ladies Luncheon and the
IHOP Trip to Grand Junction. A motion was made and
approved to donate to both events.
After the business meeting, John Zeaphey gave a pro-
gram on “How to handle Passwords.” He distributed
handouts on his talk.
The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 13
with lunch at 11:30 a.m. at the Fresh Fish Company Res-
taurant, 7800 E. Hampden, Aurora. A meeting will follow
at El Jebel with a program on “Windows 10 Manage-
ment.”
All Shriners are invited to attend and join our Club; dues
are just $12.00 per year, first dues $6.00 per year if a new
member joins after Jul 1. Wives and guests are always
welcome.

Pipe Band
By Kent Burns
February was at least interesting, starting off with a trip
to Snowmass for our annual Fat Tuesday appearance.
They did away with the parade this year – much to the
chagrin of just about everyone who came up to us with
either “When does the parade start?” or “Love the bag-
pipes.” Instead, we played short sets up and down the
mall, sharing time with a very good Dixieland jazz band
whose members had to be high school students. (Either
that, or we are a lot older than we thought ‘cause they sure
looked young!) When done, we told those in charge about
the crowd’s disappointment in no parade. Methinks the
parade will return next year. In any event, several of our
members were able to gather beads from the obligatory
bead-throwing, taking them home for grandchildren and a
couple of pet birds (who, it seems, love to play with – and
tear apart – those bead “necklaces”). As usual, the best
part of this trip is the camaraderie during the trip up and
back. (Good thing we like each other – the trip itself is
four hours each way.) And we did create our usual
“looking good” stir at our two “approved” restaurants.
Another annual appearance in February was for the
DAV Auxiliary and went well. Things for veterans are
always a “must” for us but this one could be termed
“above and beyond.” They changed the game plan and we
played much later than originally planned. Most of us
were therefore pressed for time and could not stay for the
offered dinner. Reluctantly we had to withstand the temp-
tation of the tantalizing smell of fried chicken and soldier
on to our other mundane and/or domestic weekend duties
apart from the Band.
Speaking of changing the plans, the Veterans’ Passport
to Hope Gala was the epitome of such. It was held in a
venue much too small to handle the attendance, run by a
novice with respect to military protocol, but carried off
well in spite of all the problems thanks totally to the floor
director who had the unenviable task of making it all run
smoothly, especially since it was streamed “live” on Face-
book for more exposure and hopefully more donations.
Continued on pg. 13
Well here we are into February already in this 2018 year
of our lord. I am not the sage that our great Brother and
friend Charlie Johnson was but we will keep struggling.
May be we will get this to something palatable.
We had our February meeting at our usual place in the
Overland Trail Café at the Atwood interchange of I76 and
Hwy 63. We enjoyed a great breakfast and proceeded
with the opening of our meeting. We were going to have
an Installation of Officers but our Divan rep and some of
the officers were under the weather and unable to attend
the meeting. We will try again next month. We discussed
financial shape of the units and it was decided that we
contribute $300 from each unit to the Masonic Band
Camp again this year, as we feel it is well spent and the
students really enjoy the camp.
It seems that time flies so we must be having fun as it is
now time to start applying for the permits for our annual
fireworks sale. The lodges in the area are all staying busy
so far this year with Sterling just completing another 1st
degree Initiation, and a 2nd degree, and have a couple of
Brothers scheduled for the KT orders. The Akron Pasture
degree will be coming up in early June and the High
Plains Rendezvous will be June 23rd here in Sterling.
It was then time for all to go to work so we departed in
peace as Harmony prevailed. You know that you all have
a standing invitation to come out and meet with us the
second Monday of each month here at the Overland Trail
Café at the Atwood interchange at 6:00 A.M. That is the
Sinclair Station at Exit 115 of I-76. Good food and Great
Fellowship.

We had our regular meeting on February 13th at 11:45
AM at the Grand Vista Hotel with the meeting opened by
our new President Linn Armstrong. The invocation was
given by Chaplain Roger Phillips and Pledge of Alle-
giance was lead by Sgt of Arms Steve Thomas. The Pres-
ident brought up his new program as to getting a webpage
for WCSC set up so more people will know what we are
all about. Amber Hodges, who works with Linn on other
projects, gave a presentation on how to and how much it
would cost to set the Website up. The board voted to get a
website set up and will hope to have it going in a couple
of weeks.
We, WCSC, would like to thank all the Shriners and
their ladies who came over for the installation. It was
great to see you and have some fun time together. We
are planning for next year at the same place only we are
planning on it being on February 9, 2019 so we will not
conflict with the Super Bowl.
We are now getting ready for IHOP Pancake Day on the
27th of February and are hoping you all can make it over
for the day. We are going to try to beat last years contri-
butions to Shriner's Hospital for Children.
Our Hospital Coordinator, Gary Brown, advised that it
had been a slow couple of months. He only had sent 3
children to Salt Lake City in January and 1 so far this
month. It was brought up that we get the Circus Tickets
our as soon as possible so we can get out and get them
sold. The Circus this year will be on June 1 & 2 at the
Mesa County Fairgrounds. The meeting was closed in
due form at 1:00 PM.
Clowns by Steve Thomas:
Not much to report this month. Will let y'all know how
IHOP went in our next addition. I did turn the gavel over
to our new leader Gary "Zeke" Weiszbrod at our February
meeting and feel we are in good hands this year. We do-
nated one of our mini-model T's to Jim Ditmore for him to
use in parades this year.
We meet again in March right after the Board meeting.
Tri-County by Steve Thomas:
At our January meeting at Needlerock Brewery in Delta
we had a guest couple. Past Master of Montrose Lodge
#63 Nick Morgan and his lady Deanna joined us. We had
a good turn out, great food and good fellowship. Just a
little noisy for a meeting. The 50/50 cash was won by
Jacki Thomas and she used it to shore up the clubs bank
account. Tonni Wright won the door prize which was a
bag of goodies and she will replace that at our next meet-
ing.
We meet in March at Creekside Cafe on the north side of
Cedaredge on the 24th at 1pm. These are open to anyone
who would like to join us.
Dune Buggy Patrol
By: Don Weiser
February has come and gone, with another month
of slow activity for the Dune Buggy Patrol.
February 3rd and 4th found many of us making the
annual bus trip to Grand Junction for the Ceremonial and
Installation of Officers for WCSC. It was a great trip with
lots of great food and drinks.
February 4th, following the bus trip back from
Grand Junction, some of us gathered at the Shrine for the
Super Bowl Party. The Dune Buggy Patrol was asked to
supply pizza for this event, so 8 Domino’s pizzas were
bought. Once again, a fun time was had by all that attend-
ed, with lots of great food and snacks.
February 11th was the Valentines Brunch, which
was held on Sunday instead of our normal Monday meet-
ing. Many of our Dune Buggy members were in attend-
ance, and enjoyed a wonderful brunch with lots of cham-
pagne and other beverages flowing. We enjoyed the music
of Megan, one of our Shriners Hospital Kids.
February 14th found 11 members and 6 Lady Bugs
attending our Dune Buggy Patrol meeting. Lots of unit
business was taken care of at this meeting. The new By-
laws were reviewed and approved. We also elected Don
Strand to take over for Ken Jones, as the new Secretary /
Treasurer. We also approved the payment of our 2018
CSASMC dues. Don and Cathie Weiser have volunteered
to attend the CSASMC midwinter meeting in Wichita, in
April, so their cost for attending the dinner will be paid for
by the Unit. Finally, it was great to see Roger Mendenhall
at the meeting and hear his report on how his efforts to
complete the building of his dune buggy are progressing.
We are beginning to make plans for 2018 CSSA,
which is in Branson, Mo. this year. We already have 1
buggy that is planning to make the trip and would like to
see more going, as we cannot compete in anything but
Show Car Class without at least 2 cars. Let’s all look at
our schedules and get more cars to Branson!
Upcoming Events:
March 12th Family Shrine Meeting with Hospital Re-
port, 5:30 pm social, 6 pm dinner, 7 pm Meeting
March 17th St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Lunch follow-
ing at Highlands Lodge. More information to follow.

Fourteen members and guests met with the Optars photog-
raphy club for their February 6th dinner meeting at Davies’
on 26th and Kipling, The program at this meeting was the
viewing of the pictures taken at our last meeting in Janu-
ary, “Photographers Shooting Photographers”. There were
72 pictures taken in the dark Shriners’ meeting room by
different photographers; they were critiqued (and en-
joyed!) by those present, and suggestions were given on
how to improve them (see picture).
Our Divan Rep, Ron Williamson, was there with Robyn,
as a guests and members. He announced the upcoming
events of El Jebel; among those items mentioned was the
gift card for the Ladies’ Luncheon, Craft Show and the
Sportsmen’s Raffle (it was suggested that Optars come up
with a table item to raffle for the club).
For the next program, March 6, President Ron Dun-
smore asked for someone to “volunteer” to bring a young
lady to act as a model. Members and guests were asked
to bring their cameras (or camera/phones), and we would
“shoot” her! But plans change (no models), so we will be
experimenting with different light settings on our cameras.
(If anyone can come up with a young model, let Ron
know!)
We will meet at Village Inn (Hampden, near the Shrine)
on March 6th, at 5:00 p.m., to get everyone out and on
their way home at around 8:00. So remember your camer-
as, and we’ll all be “in focus”!
OPTARS
By J & J Taylor
(Pipe Band cont.)
Maybe someday they will stop reinventing the wheel each
year with a different producer and let a professional event
planner handle it.
(It seems that a different sponsoring company
“volunteers” some poor employee to put on this event,
with no “connection” to past endeavors.)
The much anticipated performance with the AFA cadets
to welcome home the May Honor Flight is in jeopardy.
We have been told that the Academy cadre has decided to
designate May as some sort of intramural time thereby
restricting cadets to the Academy and thus stifling our
hoped-for and worked-toward get-together. But as usual,
we keep hoping that somehow someone will be able to
figure a way to pull it off.
In the meantime, we are working toward the two St. Pat-
rick’s Day-themed concerts with the Rocky Mountain
Brassworks. Their director sent us his music choices for
this year in a much less-than-timely fashion. His request-
ed two tunes are Grade three and will be a challenge.
Hopefully the pipers can rise to the occasion and pull it off
with their usual élan.
For any who are interested in joining in on all this fun,
we are at the Shrine every Thursday evening at 1900.
Come on out and join us.

The RV Roamers had their monthly Inning on
2/18/2018 at Cinzetti"s Italian Market in Northglenn. Our
hosts for the meeting were Richard and Heidi Talkington.
We had a grand total of 20 in attendance which included 2
guests of Dorothy Hering, granddaughter Monica, and
daughter Terri. Our other guest was Jimmy Skaggs who
accompanied Richard and Heidi Talkington. We were
also happy to have two of our long time members, Harold
and Nicole Potter back with us again.
We enjoyed a wonderful spread of Italian foods fol-
lowed by a wide array of desserts. What more could you
ask for on nice warm sunny day in Colorado.
Our President, Jim Taylor was happy to introduce Past
Potentates and their ladies in attendance: Tony & Ellen
Dattilo and Larry & Carol Clark. Jim thanked Yoriko
Umsted for her artwork and efforts in making the lively
invitation fliers for the Club. He also announced that Bil-
ly Umsted has volunteered to take charge of the Clubs
email communications program. Members should send
any club news to Billy's email, [email protected].
Happy Birthday to Jannice Cromwell, Marylyn Hepp
and Harold Potter. Happy Anniversary to the Barnes,
Clarks, Kohlweys and Talkingtons.
We have several RV outings planned for this year to
include Chatfield State Park in May, Winding River Re-
sort in June, Mountaindale RV Resort in July, Diamond
RV Park in August and our annual Caravan rally in Sep-
tember to Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico. Members are
encouraged to sign up early as most of these places book
up early. Our April 29th event for the Candlelight Dinner
Theater has 39 signed up, more possible.
Our March Inning will be held on March 18th at The
Old Spaghetti Factory in Westminster. If you seek thrills,
excitement and fun visiting new places and camping out,
come join us and find out what an exciting group of mem-
bers with Big Rig toys have to offer for people who enjoy
fresh air, open road and the great outdoors. For more in-
formation on our club, call our Membership Director, Jim
Taylor at 303-795-3278, or email at [email protected].
(no RV required to be a member)
Note from the President: A volunteer was asked from
those present, to do the Red Fez article for the March edi-
tion. At each “Inning” and “Outing” Roamers will ask
for a new volunteer; pictures will be supplied. This month
Billy Umsted volunteered---thanks, Billy!

To join the T-Nobles, having fun like the Shriner’s in the
cartoon, give me a call at 559-960-2339. We have cars,
fire engines, and trailers available. It’s not too late to de-
cide if you want to participate in the St. Patrick’s Day Pa-
rade on March 17th. If you are not sure that you are ready
to join, you can parade with us and see how you like it.
We have lots of fun interacting with young children and
adults as we go along the parade route.
We tow in the parades a theme trailer, which carries a girl
doll, representing a Shriner patient, in a wheelchair that is
being pushed by a Shriner. These mannequins were made
by our own Harry Gorham and have been parading with us
for several years. The wording on the side of our theme
trailer says, “We ride so children can walk.”
When you enter a parade as a T-Noble you have the abil-
ity to interact with the crowd on a personal level. You see
the faces of children and adults light up as you approach
and there is not a parade that goes by where someone will
not seek you out and thank you for having an impact on
their lives or the lives of their family.
WHAT WE EXPECT FROM YOU? To bring a clear
mind, open heart, and insatiable appetite for fun. In life
you receive what you put into it.
Come join the T-Nobles and experience the Shrine as it
was meant to be: to help children walk, to make a differ-
ence within El Jebel Shrine, but most importantly, to have
FUN!

Caring Ladies of El Jebel
The Caring Ladies of El Jebel met on St. Valentine's
Day at the Chalet Restaurant for their first business
meeting of 2018. We were pleased to welcome a new
member, Dee Jacobson, who was encouraged to join us
by Nancy Veitel. Sadly, our Divan Representative, Jim
Oliver, was unable to attend due to a bad cold which he
chose not to share with us. We appreciate that and look
forward to his attendance next month. As usual, we
enjoyed good food, happy comradeship, and the sharing
of news and fellowship.
The (almost) new officers for 2018 were in-
stalled: President, Carolyne Irwin; Secretary, Jeanne
Thompson; and Treasurer, Kay Bell. Lindy Wasny had
the honor of administering the Oath of Office.
All widows of Shriners and Masons are welcome to
attend our meetings each second Wednesday, 11:30
AM, at the Chalet Restaurant, 7340 W. 38th Ave.,
Wheat Ridge. We order from the menu, have a short
business meeting, and enjoy a few laughs. Though we
come to this group with a common sadness, our meet-
ings are joyful and fun-filled and we leave with happi-
ness in our hearts. If you are, or know of, a Masonic
widow, please call Kay Bell at 303-430-9001 and we
will look forward to meeting you.

March is here, and that starts the parade season. It’s time
to uncover those cars and get them shined up... Our entire
new Divan is in place, and we wish our Illustrious Potentate
Rich Silvers and First Lady Janet, another successful year. I
hope you will join us in the activities that are planned of
this year. I am asking all of the Vintage Iron Patrol to give
him your support.
Each year YOU are required to show proof of insurance
for your vehicle liability for the Shrines protection. Make
sure you have proof in your vehicles.
I would like to remind the membership about your dues.
This is the third month of the year, and some of you are
delinquent. Come on, it’s like New Years; it comes every
year, January 1st. We are going to update our roster; if
your dues are not current you will be dropped from the
mailing list. Please mail your dues for 2018 to our treasurer
Dave Cooley, 7060 West 32nd.Place, Wheat Ridge, Co.
80033.
Our first parade kickoff is St. Patrick’s Day. March17th.
We need a good turn out of our members. If you don’t
have a parade vehicle, or it’s not running, come ride with
another member. Some of us will be meeting at the Butcher
Block on 38th.and Brighton Blvd. 7:00-7:30 am. For break-
fast.
Our unit meetings are held at a new venue, GREAT
SCOTT’S 50’s DINNER, on the second Wednesday of the
month at 7:00 PM. Dinner is at 5:30 if you would like to
join us. It’s located at 1295 Cortez St. just off the Boulder
Turnpike. Exit Pecos N to first right East. Take the frontage
road to the top of the hill. The diner is on the left.
We had a great Valentine Luncheon, food was very good,
and the entertainment was even better. We had a very good
turn out and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Family night – Hospital Report will be on the 12th.
Remember, we are Masons first. KEEP IT ON SQUARE

by ejgw Every office, organization, business, school, you name it,
has its own “variety” of Girl Friday, Keeper of the Key,
Know-All, however you may name her. El Jebel is lucky
enough to have the epitome of all these people neatly
rolled up into an invaluable lady called “Susie.” Susan
Carol Boles has been around El Jebel for forty years.
That’s longer than most of us have been Nobles. And def-
initely long enough to know more about El Jebel that any-
one else.
Susie, a self-described Colorado “naïve native,” is a
graduate of Arvada High School. An avid cook, she
counts as her proudest accomplishment her son Chris,
“Critt”, who is a captain on Boeing 777’s flying for a
Charter Airline and as she always proudly adds, a
“volunteer firefighter.”
For those who have called the office with questions
about anything from “how many points do I have?” to
“what’s the weather going to be like tomorrow?” she in-
variably has the answer. And if not, she will find out and
call you back. Even before the days of “caller ID” she had
that incredible knack of answering the phone with “Hello,
fill in your name here .” (Just kidding about the weather,
although she would likely be much more accurate that
those other prognosticators found on radio and TV.)
She is the “catch all” for all the little jobs people agree to
do and then dump on her. Now she is the editor of this
little internal memo sheet we all affectionately call “the
Red Fez.” To that end, and as an aside, she is always on
me to shorten these little missives in an effort to make her
job of putting it together easier. How am I doing in that
regard?
These little pieces are to be kept light and cheerful. To
that end, no mention of Susie’s travails of late, nor of the
fact she is essentially homeless were it not for the generos-
ity of some “snow bird” nobles and their ladies, nor of the
fact there is a Go Fund Me out there to help her in this
difficult time. (Remember our responsibilities to widow
and orphans? Well, Susie is a Masonic widow and her
best friend, Dante the German Shepard, is essentially an
orphan until she gets back into her own home.)
Susie is not the type wanting to be the focus. During our
“interview” she kinda figured out where we were going
and dragged her feet – actually more like the shy little girl
kicking the dust with an “Aw, shucks.” But true to her
nature, when told it was for the betterment of the Shrine
she agreed. Most of these things everyone already knows
about Susie. But didja know (according to her), she is also
an avid collector of … dust?
Gotta watch how you answer those little questions, Susie.
