From our Pastor Dear Folks:
Items for this week:
**Lent: Now that the Season of Lent has begun, please review the bulletin for all of the spiritual activities available during this holy time. A few things to highlight:
~Adult Education Series both on Sunday mornings (after the 9:30 a.m. Mass and on Monday evenings beginning at 6:30 p.m.). This Lenten series is titled: “No Greater Love—A Reflection on the Passion of Christ.” You can come as your time permits and on either Sunday or Monday. Both sessions will be in the lower levels of the Church.
~Soup and Serve Tuesdays: On the Tuesdays of Lent, all are welcome for a simple soup supper and service project after the 5:30 p.m. Mass. This will occur in the lower level of the Church
~Stations of the Cross: Each Lenten Friday, beginning at 2:30 p.m., the “Stations of the Cross,” will be offered in the Church. The school community comes to this and all are invited.
~Eucharistic Adoration: Saint Mary Magdalen is blessed to have a 24/7 Eucharis-tic Adoration Chapel. Perhaps as a Lenten Spiritual Opportunity, spending time on a regular basis in front of the Blessed Sacrament is a wonderful way to draw closer to God. If you come in the evening when the door code is enacted—this is for security—please contact the office or one of the parish clergy to get the code to access the chapel.
~Sacraments: The Mass times and the Sacrament of Reconciliation times are listed in the bulle-tin.
~Journey in Faith: During the Season of Lent, those making the commitment to become Catho-lic and receive the Easter Sacraments take front and center. During Lent, on the First Sunday of Lent and on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent, those seeking full communion with the Catho-lic Church are prayed over and prayed for at Mass as the time for full reception into the Church happens at the Easter Vigil on April 11th. Let us pray for those who are in this final stage of preparation to receive the Easter Sacraments; and let us remind ourselves of the gift of the sac-raments that we are all privileged to receive; and thanks to all of those who volunteer to guide this process for those seeking Easter sacraments.
~Fish Frys: During the Fridays of Lent, including Good Friday, the parish offers a weekly Fish Fry. This event has grown; Saint Mary Magdalen is often recognized as having one of the best Fish Frys in Saint Louis. It is a way to build community and avoid eating meat on Friday’s.
Please take advantage of the many opportunities to draw closer to God and away from sin during this holy season of Lent. I know that Lent requires us to discipline ourselves in some way—either adding something to our routine or taking something away—and that can be hard to do but if we can remember that the sole purpose of this season is closeness to God, then the disciplines attempted during Lent are valuable. If we want to celebrate Easter well, then we must draw closer to God.
And, I want to thank the parish staff, the clergy, and all of the volunteers who’s support and help makes this season holy. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes to make all of these spiritual opportunities available. Thanks to all of you who sacrifice much to energize the spiritual life of the faithful…and us Priests!
**Catholic Women for Christ: On Saturday, March 7th, at the Touhill Performing Arts Center on the UMSL Campus is the, “Catholic Women for Christ,” event. Please look on the website: catholicwomen-forchrist.org. This is a wonderful opportunity for women to deepen their faith. This event is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Saint Louis. Doors open at 8:00 a.m., conferences start at 8:45 a.m., and the day concludes with Mass at 4:00 p.m. so that everyone is out by 5:00 p.m. With the Season of Lent upon us, this might be a very good opportunity to deepen one’s faith.
Have a good week!
Fr. Jack

Stewardship Reflection March 1, 2020
1st Sunday in Lent
“It is written: The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.”
Tempted between the riches and power of this world and service to God, Jesus chose service to His Father. If we wish to truly follow Jesus, we,
too, must decide to turn away from worldly power and riches and put God at the center of our lives.
Lent is our time to prune ourselves of earthly things. Ask God how he is calling you to serve.
Stewardship Prayer...Oh Lord, giver of life and source of our freedom, we are reminded that Yours is
“the earth in its fullness; the world and those who dwell in it.” We know that it is from your hand that we have received
all we have and are and will be.
