This balance complies with theEuropean Council Directives as well asinternational regulations and
standards for electrical equipment,electromagnetic compatibility, andthe stipulated safety requirements.Improper use or handling, however,can result in damage and/or injury.
Read these operating instructionsthoroughly before using yourbalance to prevent damage to theequipment. Keep these instructions ina safe place.
Follow the instructions belowto ensure safe and trouble-freeoperation of your balance:
! Do not operate in a hazardousarea/location
! Make sure that the voltage ratingprinted on the AC adapter is identicalto your local line voltage
! If you use electrical equipment ininstallations and under ambientconditions requiring higher safetystandards, you must comply with theprovisions as specified in the appli-cable regulations for installation in
your country.
! Exposure to excessive electromagnet-ic interference can cause the readoutvalue to change. Once the distur-bance has ceased, the instrument canbe used again in accordance with itsintended purpose.
The only way to switch the power offcompletely is to disconnectthe AC adapter
The balance housing is protectedagainst the penetration of solid objectswith a diameter of more than 2.5 mm(such as accumulated dust) anddripping water falling vertically (IP32) the housing is not completely dust-and leak-tight, however
Protect the AC adapter from contactwith liquid
Note on Installation:The operator shall be responsible forany modifications to Sartorius equip-ment and for any connections of cablesor equipment not supplied by Sartoriusand must check and, if necessary,correct these modifications and connec-tions. On request, Sartorius will provideinformation on the minimum operatingspecifications (in accordance with theStandards listed above for definedimmunity to interference).
Connect only Sartorius accessories andoptions, as these are optimally designedfor use with your balance
When cleaning your balance, makesure that no liquid enters the balancehousing; use only a slightly moistenedcloth to clean the balance.
Do not open the balance housing.If the seal is broken, this will result inforfeiture of all claims under themanufacturers warranty.

The balance consists of a weighing cell, adraft shield and a display and control unit.In addition to the choice of power supply,
via AC adapter or external rechargeablebattery pack, your balance also has inter-face ports for connecting additionaldevices, such as a printer, computer, oruniversal remote control switch, etc.
The display and control unit is fastenedto the weighing cell. Operation of thebalance follows a uniform philosophy,which is described in this manual.
Where not expressly indicated otherwise,the uses described in this manual apply toverified balance versions (indicated by thesuffix -.0CE in the model number), aswell as the standard version.
Combination of Several ApplicationsYou can combine the use of variousapplication programs to meet your morecomplicated requirements.
To select application programs one afterthe other, press d (toggle function).
KeysYou can operate the balance either by
using the keys on the display andcontrol unit or from an on-line PC.This manual describes operation usingthe balance keys.
Labeled KeysThese keys always have the functionindicated by their label, but are notavailable at all times. Availability of theirfunctions depends on the currentoperating status of the balance and themenu settings.

Input
Bar Code Scanner or Keyboard Input
You can use a bar code scanner or anexternal keyboard to input alphanumericvalues. These inputs are processed inthe same manner as keypad inputs onthe display and control unit of the bal-ance. Bar code and keyboard inputs areonly displayed; they cannot activate anyfunction.
To assign a bar code scanner orkeyboard input to a function, press oneof the following soft keys:

Serial Printer PortIn addition to Sartorius printers (such asthe YDO03-0CE), you also have thechoice of connecting a remote displayor an external checkweighing display to

Serial Communications PortYou can connect a PC, a remote display,an external checkweighing displayor a standard (non-verifiable) printerto this port.
Request messages are sent via theinterface to initiate functions in theweighing cell and in the display andcontrol unit. Some of the functionsgenerate response messages.

Error CodesIf you press a key that has no function,or which is blocked at a certain point in
an application program, this error isindicated as follows:
a double beep is sounded as an acousticsignal if the key has no function
a double beep is sounded and themessage No function is displayed inthe text line if the key function is notavailable at that time

Storage and Shipping ConditionsAllowable storage temperature: 5C to 40C (41F to 104F)The packaging has been designed to ensure that the A/D converter will not be
damaged even if it is dropped from a height of 80 cm (approx. 31 inches). Do notexpose the balance to extreme temperatures, moisture, shocks, blows or vibration.
Unpacking the Balance
Lift the inner package containing the balance out of the outer packaging by the strap.
Loosen and remove the strap.
Remove the cardboard sleeve.

Remove the following parts from the recessed spaces at the top of theinner packaging:
AC adapter (in cardboard packaging)
Weighing pan Shield plate
Remove the two padding blocks that make up the inner packaging by pulling outward.
Remove the shield disk (included with ME235S/P models only) and dust cover.
Remove the retainer securing the front draft shield panel.
Open the plastic wrapping.
Place one hand under the display and control unit and the other under the back of thebalance and lift the balance out of the lower packaging.

! Do not lift the balance by the draft shield or the front panel, as this can resultin damage.
Set up the balance at the place of installation. Open the draft shield doors.
Remove the retainers (1)securing the display and control unit and remove the frontdraft shield panel.
Remove the foam padding (2)from the draft shield.
! Save the box and all parts of the packaging in case it should become necessary totransport the balance over a long distance. Only the original packaging provides thebest protection for shipment (see also Transporting the Balance on page 20).Before packing the balance, unplug all connected cables to prevent damage.

Installation InstructionsThe ME/SE balances are designed to provide reliable weighing results under normal ambientconditions in the laboratory and in industry. Choose the right location to set up your balance
by observing the following so that you will be able to work with added speed and accuracy: Set up the balance on a completely even surface on a low-vibration balance table or
wall console Avoid placing the balance in close proximity to a heater or otherwise exposing the
balance to heat or direct sunlight, as this can considerably increase the temperatureinside the draft shield (greenhouse effect), resulting in incorrect readouts dueto convection currents, turbulence and buoyancy effects.
Protect the balance from drafts that come from open windows or doors Avoid brief fluctuations in room temperature Protect the balance from aggressive chemical vapors Do not expose the balance to extreme moisture
Linearization after TransportAfter transporting the balance, its linearity may be outside the allowable tolerances(please refer to the Specifications in the Overview chapter). After transporting thebalance, be sure to perform internal linearization. Repeat this process to obtain optimalaccuracy. For directions on this procedure, please refer to the section on Linearization.
Conditioning the Balance
Moisture in the air can condense on the surfaces of a cold balance whenever it is broughtinto a substantially warmer place. If you transfer the balance to a warmer area, makesure to condition it for about 2 hours at room temperature, leaving it unplugged fromAC power. Afterwards, if you keep the balance connected to AC power, the continuouspositive difference in temperature between the inside of the balance and the outsidewill practically rule out the effects of moisture condensation.
Setting Up the Balance ME215/235/254/414/614 Place the components listed below inside the weighing chamber in the order given: 1) Shield plate 2) Position the weighing pan and turn to the left or right until it snaps into place 3) Shield disk (ME235S/P only)
$ Note: the shield disk minimizes the effects of drafts within the weighing chamber
Remote Operation of the Display and Control Unit Unplug the cables, turn the balance on its side and lay it on a padded surface
to avoid damaging the weighing system and draft shield
Use an Allen wrench to remove the three fastening screws
Remove the display unit and attach the connecting cable
> Length of the connecting cable: 44 cm (17 inches)

Charging the Rechargeable Battery for Saving Data:All data is saved in the battery-backed memory. When initially operating the balance,leave it connected to AC power for one day to charge the battery. When the balanceis disconnected from AC power, the balance-generated data will remain stored forapproximately three months. In the standby mode, data is retained in the memory viathe power supply. Be sure to print out data before storing your balance for a relativelylong period.
Safety PrecautionsThe AC adapter rated to Class 2 can be plugged into any wall outletwithout requiring any additional safety precautions. The ground or earth terminal isconnected to the scale housing, which can be additionally grounded, if required.The data interface is also electrically connected to the balance housing (ground).

Connecting Electronic Peripheral Devices Make absolutely sure to unplug the balance from AC power before you connect or
disconnect a peripheral device (printer or PC) to or from an interface port
Warmup TimeEach time you move your balance to another location, you must condition it for at least12 hours to the new location. To deliver exact results, the balance must warm up for atleast 12 hours after initial connection to AC power. Only after this time will the balance
have reached the required operating temperature.

Antitheft Locking DeviceTo fasten an antitheft locking device, use the lug located on the rear panelof the balance.
Secure the balance at the place of installation, e.g., with a chainor a lock
Leveling the BalancePurpose:
To compensate for unevenness at the place of installation
To achieve perfectly horizontal positioning of the balance for consistent repeatabilityof the weighing results
Always level the balance again any time it has been moved.
Only the 2 front feet are used for leveling.
Turn the leveling feet as shown in the diagram until the air bubble is centered exactlywithin the circle of the level indicator

Transport Over Short Distances Place one hand under the display and control unit and the other under the back of the
balance. Lift the balance carefully and carry it to the new location.

! Do not lift the balance by the draft shield or the front panel, as this can result
in damage.
Transport or Shipping Over Long DistancesMake sure you use all components of the original packaging in the following cases:
for transport or shipping over long distances. if it is not certain that the balance will remain upright during transport or shipping.
Remove the following parts: Shield disk (included with ME235S/P models only) Weighing pan and shield plate:
Reach beneath the shield plate and lift it carefully, together with the weighing pan,to avoid damaging the weighing system.
Open the draft shield doors and carefully position the balance in the lower packaging. Press the foam padding against the housing.

Wrap the cardboard sleeve around the inner packaging.

Basic Weighing Function

Handling Samples and ContainersThe sample should be conditionedto the temperature inside the balance.This is the only way to avoid errorscaused by air buoyancy and deviations
caused by convection currents at thesurface of the sample.
Since these effects increase proportion-ally to the volume and surface of thesample, make sure that the size of thetare vessel selected is appropriate forthe initial sample.
Never use your bare hands to touchsamples to be weighed. In addition tothe effect of the temperature, theextremely hygroscopic behaviorof fingerprints left on the sample willotherwise cause considerable inter-
ference during weight measurement.
Use forceps or a similar utensil that isappropriate to place your sample care-fully on the pan. Working with yourbalance requires a steady hand and asmooth, uninterrupted technique.
If the weighing chamber has not beenopened for a relatively long period,it may have a temperature differentfrom that of the balances surroundingenvironment. When you open theweighing chamber, a change in temp-erature will inevitably occur, due to the
laws of physics, and may show up asa change in the weight readout.
Operating the Balance
Therefore, we recommend that beforeyou begin the actual weighing series youopen and close the weighing chamber at
the same rate as you will be doing duringweighing. After the weighing chamberhas been closed, the weight readout willusually stabilize after about 8 seconds.The accuracy of the weight readouts willincrease as you continue weighing withgreater consistency.
Weighing Electrostatically ChargedSamples and ContainersMajor measuring errors can occur whenelectrostatically charged samples andcontainers are weighed. This problemparticularly involves samples that haveextremely poor conductivity (glass, plastic,filters) since they can discharge electro-static i.e., friction-induced charges onlyover a relatively long period of time. Theresult is an interaction of forces among thecharges adhering to the sample and thestationary components of the balance(weighing chamber base plate, draft shieldconstruction, balance housing). This isnoticeable when the weight readout drifts.At high humidity, this effect is notvery pronounced or may not occur at all,due to the thin layer of water thatcondenses on the sample and, through
conductive discharge, counteractsinterfering static electricity.
In addition to taking purely mechanicalcounteractive measures (protecting thesample using a special antistatic weighingpan see the Accessories), you canneutralize the surface charges bybombarding them with ions of theopposite polarity (see page 53 forinstructions on activating the ionizer).This is a highly effective procedurefor eliminating static electricity.
The balances environment, including the
operator, can considerably interfere withweighing results, due to static electricity.The balances of the ME/SE series havebeen designed to counteract this phenom-enon: the glass surfaces of the draft shieldhave a special metallic coating.
The rear panel of the balance has aterminal for connecting an equipotentialgrounding conductor. It is used foradditional grounding of a peripheraldevice (for example, a vibrating spatula).This terminal is designed for singlegrounding wires up to .25 standardgauge or 6 mm2 stranded wires and for .18
standard gauge or 4mm2
stranded wires.
Weighing Magnetic or MagnetizableSamples
It is technically impossible to avoid the useof magnetizable materials in the manufac-ture of balances. Ultimately, the operatingprinciple of high-resolution balances isbased on electromagnetic force compensa-tion of the load placed on the weighingpan.
When magnetic or magnetizable samplesor containers (e.g., a beaker with a stirrer)are weighed, interactions among theabove-mentioned components of thebalance may occur, distorting weightreadouts.
Unlike deviations caused by electrostaticcharges, magnetic interference is usuallyconstant over time. However, it is sensitiveto and dependent on the position of thesample container on the weighing pan andis also characterized by poor repeatability.
To reduce the effect described above,we recommend increasing the distancebetween the sample and the weighing panby inserting a non-magnetizable materialbetween them (the reduction in force isproportional to the quadrate of the distance).In special cases, soft-magnetic plates
should be used to shield against interferingmagnetic effects.
In the presence of extremely strongmagnetic fields for instance, whenmeasuring the susceptibility of a samplein an electromagnet you should usethe below-balance weighing port, whichcomes standard on your balance.
