Teacher’s Notes
ObjectiveRaise students’ awareness that the use of emoticons affects how we relate to others.
Instructions
• Write the words EMOJI and EMOTICON on the board and ask students if they know the difference. (Answer: The use of emojis originated in Japan, and it means “picture character.” The range of emojis is broader than emoticons, and includes pictures of animals, transportation, business icons, and others. An emoticon is a typographic representation of a facial expression, used to convey emotion in a medium.) If the Internet is available (on computers or mobile devices), students can do a quick search. Draw a happy face ☺ and :) and ask which is an emoji (the fi rst) and which is an emoticon.
• Pair students and give them a copy of the Worksheet. Students complete Exercise 1 in pairs. Encourage students to use a monolingual dictionary (print or online) to look up the words they don’t know.
• Correct with whole group.
• Students complete Exercise 2 individually.
• When they are done, ask them to fi nd a classmate with the same “faces.”
• ALTERNATIVE: Divide students into groups of 6. Ask them to compare and report the top 2 emojis in their groups and to discuss in their groups why they think the ones they found are the most common ones.
