Now in its tenth year, the annual Lulaworld festival (May 27 to June 6) brings together Toronto’s finest world, jazz and Latin musicians presenting their latest compositions and projects and collaborating with celebrated international guests. With the Toronto2015 PANAM games just around the corner, Lulaworld 2015 promises to be a pre-party that will get Toronto dancing to the music of the Americas.
Following up on the success of last year, the festival will include a day of free outdoor programming at Dundas West Fest on June 6. Lulworld 2015 includes three CD releases, more than a dozen international guests, free concerts, family workshops and a huge Brazilian parade that YOU can be part of!
Presented by Lula Music and Arts Centre, the 2015 Lulaworld festival will highlight the incredible breadth and calibre of the Toronto world and Latin music scenes. LMAC would like to thank our funders, partners and sponsors for their generous support.

Ground breaking local ensemble Dance Migration is joined by special guest Irineu Nogueira, one of Brazil’s most talented choreographers and teachers of Afro-Brazilian dance and samba as well as Sao Paolo-based percussionist Alysson Bruno. The performance is the culmination of an international collaboration informed by Nogueira’s contemporary dance language Abieié (regeneration in the Yorùbá language).

Building on a percussion repertoire, Mar Aberto SoundSystem layers bass, skankin’ guitars, dubby horns and vocals atop the grooves. With Tamar Ilana on vocals and Magdalys Sav on the percuteria, dub reggae is combined with Brazilian rhythm, cumbia, and carimbó!
Led by “Pato” Martinehe the “Bloco Afro” style of T.Dot Sound Crew is based on forms originating in Salvador da Bahia, incorporating many surdo bass drum rhythms and bringing a Pan Am flavour with reggae and latin song intertwined with horns, guitar and bass.

Hosted by Dwayne Morgan, The South North Griots Summit brings together griots, poets and spoken word artists from across North America, the UK, and the Caribbean for a series of workshops, panels, and performances. This kickoff event focusses on collaboration between words and music, as notes and verse come together in harmony.

True to their name, Lula All Stars represents the very best of Lula Lounge’s weekly live salsa series. Their debut CD features the city’s top salsa vocalists backed by an A-list lineup that includes leaders and players from the scene’s most established ensembles, playing a uniquely-Canadian version of “salsa dura.” Led by Sean Bellaviti and Luis Orbegoso and comprised of musicians with roots from across the Americas, Lula All Stars will follow up their album launch with an appearance at the Toronto2015 Pan Am Games.

Going beyond typical Klezmer harmonies, Di Meschugeles virtuosic performances are simultaneously both fiery and heartbreakingly moanful. Presented by the Israeli and German Consulates, celebrating 50 years of bilateral diplomatic relations.

Our ongoing Toronto Ignite project brings middle and secondary students to Lula Lounge to learn about the music and dance of the Americas. The students are invited back to Dundas West Fest on June 6 to participate in workshops and performances at the Lulaworld stage, presented by CBC Toronto. Teachers interested in attending a workshop with their class can email [email protected] for details!
A highlight of the day at Dundas West Fest will be the very first performance of Grand Bateria Express. With more than 100 players the group has contributors from eight of Toronto’s top Brazilian drumming troups playing four rhythms that highlight various tropical traditions embraced by Toronto drummers. If you want to drum in the parade, just watch the videos at lulaworld.ca, learn your part for each rhythm and join the biggest Brazilian band in Canada!
LMAC is proud to present a PANAMANIA commissioned project featuring the great pianist, composer and educator Danilo Perez. The PANAMANIA Lula Big Band brings together award-winning jazz artists John Patitucci, Brian Blade, Miguel Zenon, Pedrito Martinez and Canada’s own Jane Bunnett as well as the students of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute.
Canadian composer, producer and bassist Roberto Occhipinti serves as as Artistic Director for this unique international collaboration with musical direction by Perez. Concerts take place July 21st at Nathan Phillips Square and July 22 at Koerner Hall. The Koerner Hall presentation will include the world premiere of a new piece by Danilo Perez commissioned by LMAC and PANAMANIA and will be co-presented with Toronto Summer Music and PANAMANIA, presented by CIBC.
