The FieldGeology is the study of the Earth - the rocks and fossils of which it is made, the processes that shape it, and the history of life. Geology is the fundamental environmental science. Mastery of geology requires a knowledge of physics, chemistry and biology to understand present and past interactions of the lithosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere.
The CurriculumStudents pursuing degrees in geology must fulfill the academic requirements of the College of Science and the Department of Geology & Geophysics. The three BS.oncentrations areas are:
• Geology• Environmental Geology• Geophysics
During the freshman year, the student should take a series of intro geology courses. For graduation, they must take mineralogy, paleontol-ogy, petrology, sedimentary processes, structural geology, geophysics, plate tectonics, geochemistry, and GEOL 3666, “Field Geology,” at the department’s field camp in Colorado.
Departmental Scholarships
The Department of Geology & Geophysics does offer scholarships specifically for qualifying geology students. These are in addition to the hundreds of competitive scholarships awarded by the Unversity each year.

Undergraduate Research OpportunitiesThere are numerous opportunities to participate in undergraduate research projects in the field of geology. Within the department, faculty members have ongoing research projects and are pleased to have un-dergraduates gain valuable experience. From understanding mountain forming processes to the timing of glacial retreats in Antarctica, there is a project that will interest you. If you are interested in undergraduate research, please contact a faculty advisor.
