PERCY’S PLANT SALE
Percy’s Plant Sale was held in Sherfield Village Hall onSaturday 10th May. Due to the windy wet weather it hadto be held indoors, but there was an excellent turnoutnonetheless. Many of the popular plants were sold out
within the first 30 to 45 minutes.
Plant stalls were organised by St. Leonard’s Church and theGarden Club, with many volunteers both bringingplants and helping in a variety of ways. Ourthanks go to all who came and purchased plantsand spent their money; to those who broughtplants and helped in the sales; to P.O.S.H. for
organising the coffee morning; to Sandy andJanet for the raffle and to Paul Barratt andLorraine for the donations of bananas. A total of£887 was raised, to be shared between the Village Hall, the Garden Club and the Church. Itwas good to see Daisy Sims present. It was herlate husband Percy who started the sale manyyears ago to raise money for the Village Hall and the Church, two of the
institutions Percy loved so much and did so much for. The Plant Sale is alegacy that continues as a memory of Percy.

Envelope Donation Scheme
Our thanks go to all who contributed to the magazine via the envelopescheme held in April. A total of £651 was raised for which the managementcommittee are most grateful. We are endeavouring to introduce more
colour pages to the Link, but each extra colour page increasesthe cost of printing, currently running at around £1,000 permonth. Our distribution now stands at 2,000 copies, a figurelikely to rise as more houses are built at Sherfield Park. Whilewe are dependant on revenue from advertising to pay for themagazine, we have a policy to keep the advertising content less
than 50% of the magazine content. This is a fine balancing act which ourtreasurer does with consummate skill, so little extras such as the envelope
scheme help to keep our finances in good order. We are so grateful for anycontributions made towards the cost of maintaining the high standard of themagazine.

“Pastoral Letter”
What have we done today?
One of the easiest things in life is to put off until tomorrow what weshould be doing today, especially when the deed to be done is
challenging and perhaps a littleuncomfortable. How easy it is tomake an excuse that the particulartask would be better postponed foranother day, or week or evenlonger. The hallmark of Christianityis action, not words. When Jesustook that final walk into Jerusalem
knowing that he was about to betortured and killed, how easy wouldit have been to have said to himself “my disciples are not ready ( they
weren’t ) so let’s put this off for another year to give me more timeto prepare them”. But Jesus did not fall to that temptation, and inso doing went through death followed by a triumphant resurrectionthat changed the course of history. The following is the final verse
of a poem by an unknown writer.
We shall reap such joys in the by and by,
But what have we sown today?
We shall build us mansions up in the sky,
But what have we built today?
Oh, how sweet it is in fond dreams to bask,
But right here and now we must do our task.Yes, this is the thing our souls must ask,
“Just what have we done today?”
All the words that Jesus spoke, his wonderful teaching, the parablesand his dialogue with the disciples and others around him wouldhave come to nothing without the action that was the hallmark ofhis ministry. And the greatest action was his sacrificial death on thecross and his resurrection that followed. So in our small way, perhaps an evening prayer for us should be “ just what have wedone today ?” Donald

Review of Loddon Players "CONFUSIONS"
by Alan Ayckbourn.
I thoroughly enjoyed my night at the ‘theatre’ last month. Afull house greeted the cast and were quickly engaged in the
first play.
Confusions is a series of 5 one act playsdesigned to shine a light on some of thehidden mores of humanity. The plays ‘A Talkin the Park’, ‘Mother Figure’, ‘DrinkingCompanion’, ‘Between Mouthfuls’ and‘Gosforth’s Fete’ are tenuously linked byperformers but each stands alone.
The opener, probably one of the more downbeat plays and
rightly moved to the beginning of the five, demonstratedsome admirable movement and timing from the cast. Theloneliness was lightened by some inappropriate paperholding from Nick Robinson.
Following some scene shifting ‘Mother Figure’ emergedslightly inauspiciously. Perhaps one of my least favourite‘episodes’ but purely from a writing standpoint, the actingwas very skilfully judged.
More shifting led to ‘Drinking Companion’ and a hotelscene with more inappropriate lewdness from inspiredperformances led by Pete Cook getting increasinglyinebriated (stick to beer in future) and flirtatious followed bya delicious ending.
The tables were turned again in ‘BetweenMouthfuls’ and some beautifully timed
performances and skilful stagingorchestrated by the waitress, Emily Browne
‘Gosforth Fete’ was the comic highlightdemonstrating the casts ability including alovely ‘wet look’ from Chris Horton. PeteFrancis’ final ‘prop malfunction’ left us witha laugh.
Not one of Ayckbourn’s finest works but the acting outshone
the material and kept the audience engaged and laughing.Excellent staging, direction and acting produced a thoroughlyenjoyable evening. Look out for the next production.www.loddonplayersatsherfield.co.uk. Simon Boase

VILLAGE FETE – SAT 14TH
JUNE – another plea for help!
As a traditional community-based event, our fete relies on the efforts of
dozens of volunteers, donors and sponsors and of course on the contributions
made by the hundreds of visitors who come from all over to enjoy the day. As
you can imagine there's a lot to do and we always have work for willing
helpers, so please join us and help to make the 2014 fete the best yet. Allproceeds this year will be donated to local charities (Hampshire and Isle of
Wight Air Ambulance and village charities including the Village Hall and St
Leonard’s Church). If you can spare some time please phone 880075. Also
see the new Fete website at www.sherfieldfete.org.uk
NEW CROCKERY
The crockery in the main hall kitchen has all been replaced and is available for
use by all the hall users. To keep it in good condition and for hygiene reasons
please use the dishwasher in the bar area. Some groups have expressed
concern that everything comes out wet but, as it is also very hot, it will air dry
in 5 or 10 minutes. If you need help in operating the dishwasher please speak
to Loraine, our Hall Manager. Many thanks to Priscilla O'Rourke (Loddon
Quilters) for opening her garden over the Bank Holiday for the purpose of
selling off the old crockery.
.LIDDELL HALL
Due to the age of the lighting fitments in the Liddell Hall, it has now become
impossible to obtain replacement parts and we have had to replace them with
lights similar to those in the main hall.

Text for a Month with Father’s Day and our annual Songs ofPraise on the Green - Colossians 3: 12 - 14 The NIV Bible
Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselveswith compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with
each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance againstsomeone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues puton Love.
Prayer for the Month.
Living God, we thank you that you are here among us as a loving Father, watching over his children. We recognise our need of you and weacknowledge our emptiness deep within. Help us to see our need for
everything you have given to us, if only we could but see it, the wonder ofyour love, the constancy of your care and the greatness of your mercy. You have made yourself known to us in Christ. Inspire us now through theliving presence of your Holy Spirit. Teach us to live this and every day inthe warmth of your presence. Help us to lift up our lives as well as ourmusic and song in praise of all you do for us each day. Accept what weoffer because we offer it to give you glory that is rightfully yours in heavenand on earth now and for evermore.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

NWR Report by Gill Fearon
It might seem that NWR has a fascination with chocolate.Back in the mid-90s some of us did a tour of the Marsfactory in Slough, guided by a former member’s husband who worked
there. Wearing white coats and hairnets we sampled freshly made Marsbars and came home with a box of goodies!
In 2001 we researched the history of chocolate, sampled various typesand read the book/watched the film of ‘Chocolat’ by Joanne Harris. Thenrecently we invited Bramley and Old Basing NWR groups to a talk on thestory of chocolate by Adrian Smith of Mortimer Chocolate Company. Adrian was a former cocoa taster at Mars, a job which took him to thetropics to select the best. He told us about how cocoa is grown and how
it is turned into chocolate. Cocoa trees only grow in the tropics andoriginated in the Amazon basin.
To start with it was used for drinking (no Cadburys Dairy Milk!) and theSpanish discovered its delights, shipping it across the Atlantic. Over timeEnglish sailors stole cocoa trees and planted them in its colonies so that itbecame a valuable cash crop growing on smallholdings in West Africa. InSouth America it is grown on plantations, e.g. Brazil, Peru and Ecuador. The cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao ) has multiple trunks and grows to a
height of about 20 feet. Its pods are colourful with reddish hues andmachetes are used to cut them from the trees and open them. The beansinside are left on a layer of, and covered by, banana leaves to ferment. They are purple to begin with, then turn brown and the mouldy ones areremoved. West Africa supplies the major chocolate companies (Cadburys,Nestle and Mars amongst others) and the price of the beans fluctuatesaccording to the market conditions.
The nibs inside the beans are roasted to form cocoa mass and this is then
squeezed to release cocoa butter. When tasting, Adrian explained that heis looking for fruity notes, not wet dog! Good dark chocolate has about70% cocoa mass (Bourneville has about 30%) and has sugar added tomake it palatable. White chocolate is cocoa butter with added fat andsugar – not so healthy! We then tasted dark chocolate from Ecuador andWest Africa to compare the flavours – we didn’t all agree on which wasbest. Incidentally, like red wine, chocolate should not be kept in thefridge! We rounded off the evening with tea/coffee, chocolate gateau andchocolate coated popcorn! A very tasty and interesting evening!
Our next event is our annual ramble with a pub meal, then a meeting onresearching names.

48th Sherfield Show - Saturday 6th September
Flowers, Produce and Crafts
Now is the time to start preparing!Last year saw entries increase and the judges were impressed by theirquality. Building on this success, we have again made a number ofchanges to the classes to keep them lively and pose new challenges. We have also changed some of the mechanisms by which awards aremade, to give more people a chance of winning a trophy!
This year will also see:
The introduction of a new ‘Novice’section for someone who hasn’t won acup or trophy before, so 2014 is the yearto give it a go.
The chance to “grow something” and
win the Bowman cup. Also, a new JuniorPhotography section: both for children
up to age 14. The ‘oddest shaped vegetable’, in the
Novelty classes - so if your prize carrots have taken a turn for theworse, or your potatoes sproutedthree heads, all is not lost.
New ‘Certificates of Achievement’ in
many sections of the schedule.
We do hope you will take part, even if justfor fun, and help show what incredible skillsand talent there are in the Sherfield district.
For full details, please go to….
www.sherfieldshow.hampshire.org.uk .
Paper copies of the schedule will be
available in the Coffee Shop,
HouseTwenty8, from early May.

Bramley Church of England PrimaryThe month of May is always a very busy one in the life of the school. This year has been no exception.
Year 6 have applied themselves brilliantly to the rigour and challenge
of the National Tests. The good humour and effort that each childshowed was excellent. The whole school supported this mostimportant occasion with their good conduct throughout the week.
The first ‘Head’s Round Table’ was held on 21st May. This was thefirst of a regular opportunity for all stakeholders to engage directlywith myself and the strategic future of the school. The focus was onthe learning community and how the vision of #brilliantbramley can
be extended out into the community and how the inspiration of thearea can reach into the school.
School are supporting the Bramley Fun Day with an information stall, singers and the chance to score a penalty against Mr Moore. It willbe a privilege to be part of the event, with so many village andcommunity members present. I will also be attending the SherfieldFete. This is in further recognition of the central importance of
community in the wider life of Bramley Primary School.Look out for our revised fortnightly newsletter which is published onthe school website and by parentmail. It includes examples of pupillearning and a list of key dates for your diaries.
Enjoy the sunshine!
