Arts are in full bloom this spring, and WLIW is your ticket to experiencing the best the New York metro area has to offer in the comfort of your own home. Take a tour of Long Island University’s Steinberg Museum of Art at Hillwood with its Director, Barbara Applegate, in this month’s WLIW Arts Beat (Thursday, April 2 at 7:30pm). The museum boasts an eclectic permanent collection as well as a year-round schedule of temporary exhibitions ranging from antiquities to graffiti. The New York Times described the museum’s curved gallery as “one of the Island’s most dramatic showcases for Art.” Viewers also meet artist Tom Otterness, who has transformed the subway stations into a canvas for public art, traditional photographer Giles Clement and a guitar-maker who carves the past into every new instrument. Each year, Long Island sizzles with film festivals. Long Island Screening Room (Thursday, April 30 at 7:30pm) previews some of the festival entries and sits down with some of the Long Island filmmakers including Fred Carpenter, Jackie Xerri, Rick Cisario and Daniel Moya. NYC-ARTS co-hosts Philippe de Montebello and Paula Zahn take audiences weekly across the five boroughs, bringing them closer to organizations and artists that employ different styles and perspectives on art, music and dance (Fridays at 7pm). April episodes showcase a range of exhibitions from famed New York institutions like The New-York Historical Society, Staten Island’s Alice Austin House, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, American Folk Art Museum and Museum of Biblical Art. Experience the Great White Way through the eyes of Christopher Wheeldon, director and choreographer of the new Broadway production An American in Paris. And the spotlight is placed on 18- year-old violinist Simone Porter, one recipient of the 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant Award, which recognizes her extraordinary talent and emerging career.

LOCAL ARTS & CULTURE SHINE ON WLIW

NATURE: ANIMAL HOMESEcologist Chris Morgan investigates how animals build their remarkable abodes in Animal Homes, and the intriguing behaviors and social interactions that take place in and around them. Morgan serves as guide and real estate agent, evaluating and deconstructing animal dwellings from bird nests to beaver dams, and shows off clever animal architects and the ingenious ways they deal with troublesome habitats.

At the end of the month, Mystery Monkeys of Shangri-La (April 10 at 8pm) follows a family of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys living in the highest forests in the world. Their survival in the harsh Himalayas depends on strong defensive strategies, cooperation and interdependence.
