The interviews withprospective actors,by contrast, can bedisarmingly funny. One performer, whomoonlights as a sexeducator, gives a brieftutorial on how to usedifferent types of whips. At another point, aprofessional Santa Claustells the camera that Patsywas probably “a royalb—— of a mother.”
“The evidence wascompromised,” oneactor laments, in aneffort to sound like anexpert. Others parse thepsychology of the ransomnote found at the scene.
Just when the movie’stalking heads start togrow tiresome, there’s asubtle shift in the film. The question-and-answer sessions aresuddenly shot, like there-enactments, with thatsame grave palette, andthe stories become moretragic.
One man, trying outfor the part of JonBenét’sfather, opens up about hisrecent cancer diagnosis;another talks about theethics of working onthis kind of project. Hisfriends warned him,he says, against gettinginvolved with anythingassociated with the case, but he thought somethingpositive might come fromhis participation.
His instincts werecorrect. The finalmoments of the movieare a gorgeouslychoreographed sceneinvolving many of theactors we’ve gotten toknow, set to a hauntinglyspare piano score byNathan Larson. The

participants act out themany different theories(though not the actualmurder, thankfully).Watching so much agonyon a set made to look likethe Ramsey home, we’rereminded of the very realtragedy at the heart of astory that was reduced totabloid fodder.
“Casting JonBenét”has no forensic expertsor archival footage. Itdoesn’t get us any closerto the truth. But it mightjust get at somethingmore profound: Theidea that we should justacknowledge what this is— an awful, heartbreakingmystery — and let it go.
