Oh, by the way…
Liturgically, the Church interrupts Ordinary Time with the Solemnity of the Birth of
John the Baptizer! This Solemnity, on the echelon with Easter, Ascension, Pentecost and
Christmas, outranks any regular Sunday in Ordinary Time. John the Baptist was a Jewish itinerant preacher in the early first century AD. John is
revered as a major religious figure in Christianity, Islam, the Bahá'í Faith, and Mandaeism. He
is called a prophet by all of these traditions, and is honored as
a saint in many Christian traditions. Other titles for John
include John the Forerunner in Eastern Christianity and "the
prophet John" in Islam. To clarify the meaning of "Baptist", he is
sometimes alternatively called John the Baptizer.
John used baptism as the central symbol or sacrament of
his messianic movement. Most scholars agree that John baptized
Jesus. Some scholars believe Jesus was a follower or disciple of
John. This idea is strongly controverted, however, by John the
Baptist's own words in scripture, although several New Testament
accounts report that some of Jesus' early followers had previously
been followers of John. John the Baptister is also mentioned by
the Jewish historian Josephus. Some scholars maintain that John
was influenced by the semi-ascetic Essenes, who expected
an apocalypse and
practiced rituals
corresponding strongly with
baptism, although no direct
evidence substantiates this.
According to the New
Testament, John anticipated a messianic figure greater
than himself. Christians commonly refer to John as the
precursor/forerunner of Jesus because of the fact that
John announces Jesus' coming. John is also identified
as the spiritual successor of the prophet Elijah.

CATHOLIC DIOCESES CONTRIBUTE MORE THAN $58.7 MILLION
TO RECOVERY EFFORTS IN THE WAKE OF 2017 HURRICANES AND MEXICO EARTHQUAKES
There are times when a follow-up report on a project isn’t disseminated. Here’s one! For all
who participated months ago, thank you! WASHINGTON: In response to the destruction caused by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, and earthquakes in Mexico, Catholics across the United States have contributed nearly $59 million to relief and recovery efforts. Initiated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), special collections and funds were launched last year to support humanitarian relief efforts as well as to provide pastoral services and financial support to rebuild facilities in dioceses impacted by these disasters.
"The devastation wrought by last year's unprecedented disasters continues to impact the lives of our brothers and sisters in the United States, across the Caribbean, and in Mexico.
We are profoundly grateful to the dioceses that took up special collections or made donations," said Archbishop Thomas J. Rodi, chairman of the USCCB Committee on National Collections "The support of parishioners is an act of charity and a reflection of love for neighbor. We ask for continued prayers of support for the people affected by these historic natural disasters."
As of mid-May 2018, US dioceses have remitted the following amounts for relief efforts:
Hurricane Harvey – $37.2 Million Hurricane Maria – $6.1 Million Hurricane Irma – $12.8 Million Mexico Earthquakes – $3.5 Million
Humanitarian relief and recovery efforts are being provided by Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) and Catholic Relief Services (CRS). CCUSA is receiving 50% of Hurricane Harvey funds and 30% of both Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria funds; CRS is receiving 20% of Hurricane Irma funds. Initial funding from the special collections supported immediate needs such as food, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. Long-term disaster recovery is currently underway. CCUSA recently distributed $13.5 million to nine Catholic Charities agencies in Texas and Louisiana where Hurricane Harvey affected countless people.
(From previous communiqués, I trust all remember that CCUSA and CRS operate with a 3%-4% overhead. All other agencies have a double-digit overhead, some even 30%-40%. The Catholic Church sees this effort as a ministry of social justice and Gospel values. CCUSA and CRS are the best bang for your buck.)
It is getting close to the close out of the current FRUITFUL HARVEST campaign. So,
what do our parishes look like?

The Pulaski Sheriff’ Office recently offered a security and safety training workshop for places
of worship. The workshop was open to those serving in ministerial/leadership positions. The
objective of this training was to provide a forum for developing and implementing a plan to
address safety needs for places of worship. Representatives from St. Francis,
St. Joseph and St. Peter attended the initial workshop last Tuesday, 19 June.
Core groups e.g. law enforcement, EMT, fire, medical personnel, etc. need
to be established at each church to consider a security risk assessment
(facility, doors, cameras, policies and procedures). After the assessment is
completed, each parish will establish a date to meet with a representative from the Sheriff’s
Office. There is the expectation that all Parish Council members attend the meeting with the
Sheriff’s Office representative. Stay tuned for more updates.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch….fr. K
