Jim D’Ambrosio, owner of Lincoln Gold & Coin, recently
celebrated the two-year anniversary of his shop in historic
downtown Lincoln.
“We couldn’t be more pleased with the reception we have received
from Lincoln and the surrounding communities, including all our
friends in Sun City Lincoln Hills. Our inventory continues to grow
each day,” he stated in a recent interview.
In the short time they have been open, the shop has grown to
be the premiere place in this area to purchase or sell your coins andcurrency, gold, silver, platinum jewelry or unique collectible items.
Over a year ago, they added jewelry repair and engraving to the list
of products and services offered at the warmly decorated shop.
“Occasionally a first-time visitor may be taken aback by our secure
entrance,” D’Ambrosio said, “but once inside our showroom, they
feel comfortable and secure knowing they are free to look around at
our extensive collection of estate jewelry, coins, and unique collectible
items. Our many repeat customers are always commenting on the
warm and comfortable feel of the shop and the quality and unique-
ness of our inventory.”

Teir inventory of estate jewelry, perhaps the largest col-
lection anywhere in the area, is priced at a fraction of jewelry
store or department store prices. Te inventory is constantly
changing and includes everything from costume jewelry priced
from a few dollars to gorgeous gold and diamond pieces priced
in the thousands and everything in between. If you are looking
for a unique gift for someone, or just enjoy exploring unique
collectible items for yourself, you would be hard pressed to find
a wider range of unique items than in their shop.
Having invested for many years in gold and silver himself,
Jim has advised many clients, both seasoned investors and those
that are new to precious metal investments. He assists them
in planning their personal investment goals as well as help-
ing them realize those goals. If you have been thinking about
investing in gold and silver, Jim is always glad to discuss yourobjectives and share his conservative investment strategy with
you.
If you are thinking about “downsizing” and liquidating
unique collectibles, jewelry, sterling silver, coins, currency, or any
other items of value that you may have collected or inherited,
you owe it to yourself to check with Jim and his staff before
accepting any offers. You may be surprised at how much that
old stuff you have tucked away in your drawer may be worth.
Over the past two years, Lincoln Gold & Coin has surprised
many customers who have
brought in items they
have had lying around,
only to walk out with
thousands of dollars. Te
company has purchased
one coin collection for
nearly $43,000, and
regularly surprise custom-
ers with offers of $500
to $5,000 or more for
everything from sterling
silver flatware to gold
and silver coins or jewelry. Of course, not everything is worth
a small fortune, but Jim and his staff will give you a free, fairand honest appraisal. Ten the decision is yours as to selling it,
keeping it, or shopping it around.
“We have had some folks decide to shop their items else-
where to check our bid,” D’Ambrosio added. “Tey usually
come back within a week or so and sell the items to us, but we
want them to feel comfortable, so we don’t mind.”
After 11 years of retirement D’Ambrosio, a former investor,

T
here are bits of Lincoln all over America.
Above and below ground. Gladding Mc-Bean factory has manufactured decorative
architectural building pieces, tiled shingles to roof
homes and commercial facilities, as well as large
pipes that carry the nation’s sewage to treatment
plants.
Te clay factory’s start came with the business
in the sewer. In 1875, a Chicago sanitation engi-
neer, Charles Gladding, came to San Francisco
and heard about a quality, pure clay in Lincoln.
Upon inspection of the deposit, the clay was
found to be kaolin clay, protected by a lava cap
which kept it from being tainted by debris. And
the deposit was big.
Gladding then got with business partners,
Peter McGill McBean and George Chambers
and raised $12,000 to build a kiln. Soon they were
making sewer pipe.
“Six weeks later they shipped their first load of
clay pipe to San Francisco,” Jean Cross, vice pres-
ident and creative directer for Art League of Lin-
coln said. “Tey still have pipes in San Francisco
that are over 100 years old that
are still functioning (from Gladding McBean).”
In the 1930s, at the peak of the business, there were 750 employees. Te factory was
churning out not only sewer pipe and archi-
tectural pieces, but statues, dinner ware, tiles,
pottery, and more.
A 1905 catalog by Gladding McBean
featured fireplace surrounds, terra cotta sculp-
tures, sinks and troughs, Cross said.
Lincoln was a prime location for this
operation not only because of the clay
deposit, but it was also situated near the
railroad. It was an easy shot to San Fran-cisco or anywhere in the country.
In 1906, after the San Francisco
earthquake, Gladding McBean helped to
restore many buildings.
oday, the factory is still busy restoring the
nation’s buildings. Replacement decorative
pieces for cities such as, Chicago, Corpus
Christie, exas, and San Juan, Puerto Rico
were made in the Lincoln factory.

“I have had the opportunity to work on buildings all over the
United States,” Cross said.
Te way it works is photos or pieces from to-be-restored
buildings are shipped to Gladding McBean. Sculptors use these
samples to recreate the broken pieces. Since raw clay shrinks 10 to
11 percent after firing, the sculptors have to make the pieces that
much larger.
In the 19-teens and 20s, there were anywhere from six to 12
sculptors, with a demand for decorative scrolls and ornate build-
ing facades. By the 1950s, however, architectural trends changed,
going to harder lines with tiles of glass and Gladding McBean
sculptors were cut back to one.
“Now most of the sculpting work is done by Jesse Cardenas and
Viktor Verhovod,” Cross said, who is also the first woman sculptor
to work at Gladding McBean, hired in 2001.
Verhovod originates from urkestan in the Soviet Union.
Cardenas, is a Lincoln native, and has worked at Gladding Mc-
Bean since 1966.
After 141 years, Gladding McBean is still going strong. It sits
on a total of 450 acres, including the clay mine and it has 20 acres
under roof. Te need for sewer pipes remain, as it is still the best
material for the job — it doesn’t degrade like PVC or concrete. It
currently employs about 130 workers. And it’s not unusual for the
factory’s kilns to be running 24/7.
“People think that no one works there because they can’t see
them but (workers) start at 5 a.m,” Cross said.
And the factory still pulls kaolin clay from the same deposit
that lured Charles Gladding to Lincoln.
“Te deposit will last another 150 years,” Cross said.❖

Since opening their doors in June 2013, Bayabelle has taken off in its popularity.
With customers coming from all over Lincoln, Rocklin, Roseville and Sacra-
mento, their venue was just not enough so the need for a larger space presented
itself. Owners Dawn and Marc Einarsson grappled with the conflict of opening another
location or staying in the same shopping center and expanding.
“My husband Marc and I quickly decided that staying in Lincoln was important to
us. A majority of our customers live here in town and so do we! We are excited to be a
part of Lincoln’s growth,” Dawn said. Now, with their grand opening on March 3 and a complete expansion completed,
they are ready to address the demands of their customers for additional c lothing, gifts,
accessories, and the multitudes more that Bayabelle has to offer.
Dawn, along with her duo, Sabrina and Shelby, make a group that is 100 percent
dedicated to customer service.
“Tey are just complete rock stars. Tey are both so welcoming and kind and I know
our customers are in good hands when the store is in their control. I’m so proud of our
small team of three,” Dawn said.
Tey recently have been nominated by the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce for best
customer service. With only a few chosen employees, the stores atmosphere is one that

highlights the community of Lincoln, as well as
small businesses like themselves.
“A lot of products we carry are made by other
small businesses. In particular, a lot of our gifts, cards, jewelry, and s are made by Etsy dealers and
some even by customers who live right here in our
town,” Dawn said.
One could spend hours wandering through the
racks — and the best part is it is all affordable.
As a store, Bayabelle truly cares for the community. Allclothing tags are made of seed paper. Tey can be planted
anywhere and will turn into wildflowers.
“Grow ‘em, don’t throw ‘em,” Dawn said.
Bayabelle adds another level of beauty to even the
simplest of things. Te store is now open and in the

Hut Deli. Be sure to take a moment and stop by for some
unique gifts and apparel to pair with a wonderfully unique

is welcoming and memorable. Dawn, Sabrina,
and Shelby all take the time to get to know
everyone that walks in.
“How customers feel when they visit our store
and the impression they take away when they
leave is very important to us,” Dawn stressed.
Amongst many wonderful items to shop from
are also some hidden features that not everyone
would know upon entering Bayabelle. Marc ac-
tually built all of the furniture and fixtures within
the store for both the old store and now the new. He did
so out of very few materials. He used mostly plumber’s
pipe and lumber. Each piece of furniture is unique to
Bayabelle.
With an active presence on social media, Bayabelle has
grown immensely. Teir Facebook page has over 5,000
followers and their Instagram account grows steadily with
over 2,000. With so many eyes looking in on Bayabelle, they decided to sell only the finest merchandise that also

Tom and Karie Silko have been residents
of Lincoln for the past 18 years. Both
found Lincoln quite charming so when
the opportunity presented itself to open a
Beach Hut Deli the two jumped on it. In 2005
their first store was opened. om had previ-
ously been employed at Round able Pizza for
15 years before deciding to branch out on his
own, whereas Karie works full time at BeachHut Deli and works at a salon in Lincoln. Bot
owners are more than dedicated to making
their business thrive.
In 2015, om and Karie recognized that
a larger space was desired for all the business
they were bringing in. In December of that ye
their goals were achieved. Having gone from a
space of 1,400 square feet to 2,000 came with
many upgrades. Tere is now space to have an
additional 400 square feet for an outdoor patio
where guests can enjoy dining on nice days. It
has quickly become and excellent “hang out”
spot complete with lounge settings and a fire
pit. Even local schools can use the new added
space for fundraisers and events.
“We will be offering live local music on the
patio starting in May highlighting local musi-
cians and open mic nights weekly,” om said.
Beach Hut Deli has rapidly grown to
accommodate all ages. Everyone can come and
enjoy the happy hours, video games, V, and
an upgraded menu. Te happy hour is from 3-
p.m. daily. Tey offer mostly local beers andhave 14 craft beers on tap from Auburn Ale
House, Loomis Basin Brewing Co., Knee Dee
Brewery, Roseville Brew Co., and Goathouse
Brew Co. During happy hour a 16-ounce pint
is only $4. In addition to all the happy hour fu

Beach Hut Deli has not only developed a wonderful nightlife, but has also incor-
porated a breakfast menu. Teir new menu offers three Breakfast Sandos. Te Wakie
Bakie breakfast sandwich offers egg, sausage, bacon, avocado, apatio, and cream
cheese. Te Creek Croissant includes egg, ham, sausage, bacon, and Swiss cheese.
Lastly, the Dawn Patrol includes egg whites, turkey, and spinach. All are wildly
popular and delicious. Pair one with a cup of fresh brewed coffee and the morning is
complete.
Te lunch menu now offers more of a
variety with salads and even gluten-freeoptions. Choose from a chef salad, wedge
salad, mesa salad, tuna salad, barbecue salad,
or get any of their famous sandwiches on a
slice of gluten-free bread. In addition to being
nutrition and allergy friendly, Beach Hut
Deli is now also kid friendly. Teir adapted

any meat with any cheese on a three-inch roll
or sliced wheat.
