Introduction
Shaq vs. The Romantics

Cognitive Objectives
Students will explain the historical context of the Romantic Age and its
reactionary origin.
Students will identify major figures of the Romantic Age.
Students will explain the origins of Transcendentalism and Anti-
Transcendentalism, and how each relates to Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter.

Teaching and Learning Sequence
Anticipatory Set
The teacher will ask students to factstorm about the T.V. show Shaq vs. Students will
explain the premise of the show (Shaq competes against the best individual in a specific
category sports, cooking, etc.). The teacher will explain to the students that Shaq willbe competing against the best of the best in Romantic art, music, and philosophy.
Lesson Development1. The teacher will ask students to orally identify what they associate with term
romantic.
2. The teacher will then introduce the historical context of the Romantic Age, as it
contrasts to the preceding Age of Reason.3. The teacher will distribute a 3-column graphic organizer for students to organize
information about the art, the music, and the philosophy of the Romantic Age.
4. The teacher will cue the Shaq vs. The Romantics PowerPoint and present anaccompanying lecture. The teacher will explain:
a. How the emphasis on freedom and creativity became the primary forms of
expression in the Romantic Age
b. Important figures in art, music, and philosophy (comparing/contrastingeach to a similar achievement by Shaq)
c. The origin of Transcendentalism and the subsequent rise of Anti-
Transcendentalism.
d. Hawthornes role as a leading Anti-Transcendentalist and his expression
of Anti-Transcendentalist views in The Scarlet Letter.

Homework
Students will read chapters 1 and 2 of Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letterand
write a one-page summary of how the narrators comments distinguish the behaviors andreactions of those in the story during the Puritan Era differ from those of his time period
(Romantic Age).
Assessment
Formative: The teacher will monitor student progress and understanding during the
lesson by reviewing information on student graphic organizers.
Summative: Achievement will be evaluated through student performance on the one-
page summary.
