Grow students’ language skills with a fun storytelling activity starring Peter Rabbit.

PREP Label the four corners of the classroom as Fruit Market, Mountain, Train, and Bookstore [for step 2]. On individual index cards, write a word from the list below or customize your own. Place enough cards in each corner for the whole class.

• Fruit Market/Nouns: tomato, farm, sign

• Mountain/Verbs: climb, reach, try

• Train/Adjectives: brave, shiny, loud

• Bookstore/Adverbs (for grade 3): quickly, happily, suddenly

1 Tell students they will help Peter Rabbit have an adventure! Hand

out the Create an Adventure sheet. Have students share their completed fill-in-the-blank stories with one another. Point out that each adventure is different depending on the words students chose. » Level It Down: Complete the fill-in-the-blank activity as a class by copying the story on the board or projecting the sheet with a document camera.

2 Explain that students will now go on an adventure to pick out

words for a new story. Have students visit each corner of the classroom with their notebooks and pick one index card at each station. Direct them to copy down the word.

BRAIN BREAK

Grades 1–3

3 Have students write their own adventure narratives inspired by

the words they picked. To support brainstorming, use the poster as a discussion tool; students can answer the poster’s questions with their word cards. Remind students that when they write their story, there should be a problem and a solution.

» Shared writing (Grade 1): Lead the whole class in writing a narrative on chart paper or a document camera.

» Paired writing (Grades 2–3): Have students work in pairs (or individually) to write an adventure narrative using their combined word cards. To plan, they can create a simple graphic organizer by dividing a paper into three boxes for beginning, middle, and end. They should decide which box each of their word cards goes in.

4 Have students share their stories with one another. Ask: What new

things did your character experience on their adventure? What problem did your character solve and how?

To recap the lesson, have students perform an action when you say a word—jump for verbs, cup hands like a bowl to mimic an object for nouns, and twinkle jazz hands for adjectives.
