Zelophehad’s Daughters
Zelophehad’s daughters Num 27:1-11; 36:1-13
• Five daughters, of the tribe of Manasseh• Come before Moses, Eleazar, and leaders• Father, not involved in Korah rebellion, had died without sons
• Father’s name would disappear• Daughter’s request an inheritance
Zelophehad’s Daughters
Moses seeks God’s answer:– If man dies w/o sons; inheritance to daughters– No daughters; to brothers– No brothers; to father’s brothers– No father’s brothers; to closest kin
Zelophehad’s Daughters
• The problem if the daughters marry (Num 36)i.e. men from another tribe
• In Year of Jubilee, inheritance counted as part of tribe they married in to
• God’s answer:– Must marry within tribal clan– Land not to pass from one tribe to another– Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, & Noah comply
Moses Successor
Moses’ successor Num 27:12-23• Lord to Moses – Go up to Abarim (aka Nebo or Pisgah)
• View Israel’s land, but you will not enter because of your sin in Wilderness of Zin
• Moses requests a leader to ‘shepherd’ Israel• Joshua selected by Lord• Will be set before Eleazar and congregation for appointment by Urim
Early Inheritance?
Early inheritance? Num 32:1-42• Tribes of Reuben and Gad have many cattle• Land of Jazer and territory of Gilead excellent grazing land
• Ask Moses for the land in the Trans-Jordan, and to not cross over
• Moses questions intentions; reminds them of the results of spying out the land, the bad report, and the Lord’s 40 yr. punishment
Early Inheritance?
• Reuben and Gad reply they will build corrals for livestock, cities for little ones, but men will go out to to do battle with brethren and not return until all Israel has their inheritance
• Moses okays request; advises Eleazar, Joshua, and leaders if they do as they say they may have Gilead, if not their possession will be in Canaan
• Manasseh (1/2 tribe, Makirites) given land there also because they drove out the Amorites

• Cities of the Levites Num 35:1-8– Israelites to give Levites towns and surrounding pastureland for livestock– Pastureland 1500’ from town wall, extending to 3000’ (?)– Six cities of refuge; 42 other towns

• Cities of Refuge Num 35:9-34– Instuctions:– A place to flee for manslaughter– 3 in Canaan; 3 in Trans-Jordan– For Israelites and stranger or visitor– Not for 1st or 2nd degree murder– If manslayer found innocent, must remain in city of refuge until death of high priest

• Cities of Refuge - Instuctions (cont.):– If he leaves early and is killed by ‘avenger of blood’, the avenger is innocent– A murderer shall be executed upon the testimony of more than one witness– No fine can be exchanged for the life of a murderer or for the release of one confined to a city of refuge
