The commencement of constructionlater this year of the Humane Society of Missouri’s new Best Buddy PetCenter and Animal Medical Center ofMid-America marks the beginning of atransformational era for animal welfarein St. Louis and the Bi-State area. Never before has an animal welfare
organization had the kind of prominence and presence this new Best Buddy Center will have. At the intersection of one of the busiest thoroughfares in St. Louis, HSMO is building an animalwelfare facility the likes of which St. Louis has never seen.
Our New Horizons Campaign to build this wonderful new center is well on its way. So far we have raised $11.3 million toward our goal of $16 million. HSMO is exceptionally pleased toannounce that Emerson has agreed to make a $1 million gift to our campaign. Emerson is a long-time HSMO partner as a supporter of our Humane IQ Program for at-risk children. Their gift ensures this tradition continues for many generations of young learners to come.
Additional significant corporate donors include Crawford Taylor/Enterprise and related entities and Centene.
An InvitationAll pet-loving St. Louisians and friends of the Humane Society of Missouri are invited to
become part of this new future for animal welfare in St. Louis. Donation opportunities are many and at all levels. Visit hsmo.org/bestbuddycenter to learn how you can become part of A New Day for St. Louis Pets!

Trooper is forever home!
Left: Humane Society President KathyWarnick with Trooper’s new housemateGreg W., who withheld his last name to stayout of the spotlight. “We bonded right offthe bat,” he said. “He’s a great dog.”
More than a year after being severely injured, Trooper moved into his own home just in time for the 2013 holidays.
Below: Team Trooper bids him a fond farewell.
Trooper’s new pal, Greg W., was selected from amongTrooper’s many admirers hoping to adopt the dog, a mix ofStaffordshire Terrier and Boxer. Both breeds are known foraffectionate natures, high energy and strength. Greg lost hisdear companion, a Pit Bull Terrier, in October after 14 yearstogether. Previous experience with a strong, exuberant dogwas one of the criteria used by the Humane Society inselecting Trooper’s forever home. Since he works from home,Greg is able to provide the constant companionship thatTrooper craves. He has a big back yard and will go hikingwith Greg to keep fit and expend energy.
Trooper was only a few months old when he was seriouslyinjured after being dragged behind a vehicle on St. Louis’Interstate 55 in 2012. The driver was unaware the puppy was tied to the trailer hitch. HSMO investigators and police built a case that helped convict the personresponsible for Trooper’s abuse.
It was touch and go as to whether or not he would survive.Five days after his rescue the resilient puppy was still hangingin there, tail wagging, despite the fact that all of his legs wereinjured and his body had patches of exposed tendons.
Dubbed “Trooper” by the HSMO staffers, he became acelebrity with his own book and Facebook page. Over time, more than a thousand people offered to adopt him.
Efforts to rescue, save and find a forever home for Trooperwere made by the entire HSMO organization. “Unfortunately,we deal with animal cruelty and neglect every day, so it’sheartening to be reminded there are so many good, caring people out there who want to put an end to it,” noted Debbie Hill, vice president of Operations for the Humane Society.

For more than 40 years, the HumaneSociety of Missouri Animal Cruelty TaskForce (ACT) has worked alongside federal, state, local and city law enforcementofficials to investigate and hold peopleaccountable for animal abuse and neglect.
The ACT team of 15 professionals responds to 18,000reports a year, travels more than 300,000 miles toinvestigate and educate and aids nearly 25,000 animals.
Animal cruelty investigators understand the nuances ofanimal abuse law and the criminal justice process fordocumenting and filing evidence. ACT works directly withsheriff’s departments, police departments andprosecuting attorneys to assemble evidence and offerexpert testimony.
HSMO’s ACT is one of the largest animal rescue anddisaster response teams in the United States and is thedesignated lead animal welfare agency for the State ofMissouri during disaster operations.

In June, a Boxer puppy was injured withburns on his face, left ear and left side of hisbody, but was able to recover. “We suspecthis horrible burns were intentionallyinflicted,” said Mike Perkins, director of theHSMO Animal Cruelty Task Force. A rewardwas offered but no one came forward.HSMO staff members were able to save him, although he will bear scars the rest ofhis life. Animal Cruelty TaskForce Rescues 135 Dogs from HowellCounty Breeder
February 26 the lives of 135 dogs and puppies changedcompletely. No longer living in an outdoor breeding facility, theserescued dogs spent their first night in the warmth and comfort ofthe Humane Society of Missouri.
The owner of the breeding facility had decided to close its doors. The Humane Society of Missouri worked in cooperation with theMissouri Department of Agriculture and the owner to provide thebest possible outcome for these dogs: placing them in the caring, capable hands of the Humane Society of Missouri.
Humane Society of Missouri staff worked diligently throughoutthe day, providing each animal with a thorough veterinary examand vaccinations, a warm kennel with clean bedding, fresh foodand water, and lots of gentle TLC.
Many have since required additional treatment and socializationbefore they were healthy and ready for adoption.
On February 28, the Humane Society of Missouri AnimalCruelty Task Force, working in cooperation with veterinariansfrom the Missouri Department of Agriculture and the LacledeCounty Sheriff’s Office, rescued 11 horses from a property outsideLebanon, Mo. Most were extremely emaciated with spine, ribsand hips protruding prominently.
Despite multiple recommendations about proper care over theprevious several weeks from Humane Society of Missouri AnimalCruelty Investigators and Missouri state veterinarians, the animals’condition continued to deteriorate.
“Horses do not become this dangerously close to deathovernight,” said Amanda Mullen, director of Longmeadow RescueRanch. “It is tragic to see them come to the ranch in this condition. They will need many months of special feeding and veterinary careto fully recover.”
One critically ill horse was rushed to an equine veterinaryhospital where it was determined she could not survive. Apregnant mare delivered a male foal who was receivingmedications and being hand fed every three hours and was inguarded condition at the time of Tails publication. The horses arebeing taken care of at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch where they arereceiving the special love and care they need and deserve. Afterhealing, as many as possible will be made available for adoption.

More Than 250Animals Rescued on November 12Second Incident at this Property
For the second time in three years, the HSMO Animal CrueltyTask Force was called by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office toassist in removing animals from a property in the county.
More than 250 animals (192 domestic rabbits, 25 goats, 10 cats,21 chickens, four dogs and one duck) were living on the property. Many of the rabbits were kept in over-crowded, filthy, wire bottomcages with little or no protection from the weather, some stackedon each other allowing waste to fall into cages below. The ACTfound frozen water in cages and pens, many contaminated withfeces. Many of the goats suffered from upper respiratory illnessesand internal parasites.
In 2010, 158 rabbits, dogs, cats, goats, and fowl were found insimilar conditions and rescued from the same property.
“Animals deserve and are mandated by law to be providedadequate shelter, water and food and veterinary care,” commentedMike Perkins, director of the Humane Society of Missouri’s AnimalCruelty Task Force. “We believe the number of animals on thisproperty exceeded this person’s ability to properly care for them.”
The Franklin County Prosecutor has charged the animals’owner with 21 counts of Class A Misdemeanor Animal Abuse.
Dog Stolen fromOwner, BurnedThe distraught owner of Zeus called the HSMOAugust 29 when his missing dog turned up withgruesome burns on most of his body.
Humane Society of Missouri veterinarian Dr. Julie Brinkerdetermined the dog had third degree burns on 75% of his head, from his ears to his nose, with his eyes severely injured. Anadditional 30% of the dog’s body suffered third degree burns.
Police and HSMO worked together to find the malicious personcapable of such cold-hearted cruelty. The perpetrator has beenarrested and indicted. At the time this issue of Tails went to press, the case is pending.
“The Humane Society of Missouri applauds the St. Louis CityPolice Department and the St. Louis City Circuit Attorney foractively pursuing the perpetrator of this unspeakable crime,” said Kathy Warnick, president, Humane Society of Missouri.
Tragically, Zeus had no hope of survival and was humanelyeuthanized to save him further suffering. His case is aheartbreaking reminder of the need for the Humane Society of Missouri and all animal lovers to stand up for the defenselessand voiceless.
6 Winter/Spring 2014
In early February, the Warren County Sheriff’s Office received a call to check on the well-being of a neighbor. Officers found the owner deceased and the animals living outside in variousunheated enclosures.
Since no one came forward to care for the 13 dogs and threecats, the Sheriff’s Office asked the HSMO Animal Cruelty Task
Force to retrieve and care for them. The dogs and cats, of variousbreeds and ages, were exposed to below-freezing temperature forfour or five days without access to heated shelter. They were alsowithout water or food. On February 5, they were brought to theHumane Society for treatment, sheltering and eventual adoption.
HSMO Asked to Help Animals After Owner’s Unexpected Death
R E S C U E S U P DAT E continued
Last summer, a dozen horses found a safe haven at Longmeadow RescueRanch. Most were slowly dying fromstarvation and suffering from parasitesand other torments.
Django was more than 300 poundsunderweight when he came to the ranch. The 16-year-old horse was suffering from rain rot, digestive problems andovergrown hooves. Once he receivedproper nutrition and re-built muscle, he began moving about. His appearanceand his lip tattoo indicate he is aThoroughbred. “We think he has hadsome retraining since being on thetrack,” said Amanda Mullen, director ofLongmeadow Rescue Ranch. “He is verypolite on the ground and listens well tohis rider. His gaits are very smooth.”
Scarlett, a 16-year-old sorrel mare, was so weak she staggered as she
walked to the rescue trailer. She hadpressure sores all over her bony body. In her early days at the ranch, sherequired round-the-clock care. AsScarlett neared her maintenance weight, ranch staff happily discovered she wasalready trained for riding. “She has a lotof forward motion and would be best for an intermediate to advanced rider,”said Mullen.
For other horses in this rescue, HSMOwas notified too late. One such case wasMango, an extremely thin mare. She died
shortly after being rescued. Her foalKiwi, orphaned at four months old, learned to eat and drink on her own. Sheis now thriving and ready for adoption.
Rehabilitating starved horses likeDjango and Scarlett takes several monthsof vigilant care. Because they have beenwithout nourishment for long periods of time, severely underweight horses are fed small amounts of food every two hours throughout the day as well as night feedings.
Fortunately, Longmedow is there to give them the second chance they deserve.

TeddyTeddy was rescued in the fall of 2012 with other neglected
horses, mules and dogs. The miniature horse was very thin andhis hooves were so overgrown they had begun twisting and hewas in a lot of pain. Now that he’s healthy, Teddy’s beautiful roan coloring and flaxen mane and tail really shine! He’s a very good-natured guy and he enjoys attention from people.

Rock and Roll Pony Elvis was a Christmas gift for Julie Enright’s
two-year-old grandson. “Since it was his pony, we lethim chose the name. He liked Elvis and we couldn’ttalk him out of it, so Elvis it is.”
He doesn’t have a spangly jumpsuit yet, but Elvishas captured the hearts of the Enright family. Julie’sdaughter Emma, more of a ‘horse person’ than hermother, selected Elvis at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch.“I didn’t notice him at first because he didn’t crowdthe fence like the others. The more I was with theponies, though, the more I was sure he was the one.”
When Elvis came to the ranch in 2012, he wasyoung and untrained. The pony had been neglectedand was extremely thin. Julie Enright adopted Elvis in December of 2013. Despite his history, he held nogrudges, quickly bonded with his family and theywith him.
In less than two months, he readily accepted bridle, saddle and rider with the calm demeanor of a seasoned veteran. He is so laid back that he’strustworthy with the two-year-old. He’s fast atlearning tricks, too; Emma has already taught Elvis to lie down on cue. Perhaps someday he’ll even become a distinctive Presley impersonator complete with bling and sideburns.
Elvis was a Christmas gift to Isaac, already riding at age two. With him (L to R) are hisaunt, Emma Enright, his mother, Sarah Norman, and his grandmother, Julie Enright.

Lost Dog Found After Three YearsMicrochip Miracle
After having gone missing nearly three years ago from hisbackyard in St. Louis, Daphne has returned home to Griffin Walker.
The German Shepherd/Saluki mix was turned in to the HumaneSociety of Missouri in January and staff discovered she was
microchipped. The informationled staff to Griffin, son of Pamela Walker.
“I was shocked when I got thephone call and heard that she wasfound,” said Pam Walker. “Eventhough you always hold on tosome small piece of hope, threeyears is a long time for a pet to bemissing. My hope is that our storyreinforces the message of how
important it is for pet owners to have their pets microchipped. It istruly a pet’s phone call home if it ever comes into a shelter, or anyplace that has a microchip scanning device.”
All pets adopted from the Humane Society of Missouri aremicrochipped before they go home. All three locations of HSMO’sAnimal Medical Center of Mid-America provide affordablemicrochip services to all pet owners. Visit www.hsmo.org for more information.
Dozens of animals have returned home safely thanks to StLLost Pets.org, a websitecollaboration between HSMO, the APA ofMissouri and St. Louis County Animal Care and Control. Pet owners can file a lost petreport, scan the database of found pets, andconnect with each other on social media tospread the word about their missing pets or list a stray they have found.
We hope you never lose your pet, but if youdo, these resources are available:

Meet a VolunteerWho WelcomesStrangersWhat has fur and more than 1,000 legs?
The 250-plus cats and dogs that have forever homes because ofvolunteer Bekki Kirchhofer.
Her home is a nursery when a cat or dog arrives with kittens orpuppies too young to be weaned. It is a school when shy orunsocialized animals need one-on-one TLC before they are readyfor adoption. And it is a rehab center for dogs or cats requiring careafter surgeries or injuries.
In ten years of fostering, Kirchhofer has cared for creaturesgreat and small, from an Alaskan Malamute to a tiny kitten broughtto the shelter with its mother.
“I started with the cat and kitten because I had experience withcats,” said Kirchhofer. “They were so great that I couldn’t turnthem back in. I was worried that I wouldn’t get to foster againbecause I kept them.”
Next came a puppy and once again, she wanted it but “I realizedI couldn’t keep them all.” She successfully resisted temptation untilNovember 2007 when Spaniel mix Emma came along. It was truelove and she had to keep her. Recently she added Libby, aMaltese/Shih Tzu mix who was pregnant when she was rescued.
Kirchhofer first volunteered in 2001 as a Pet Pal dog walker andbegan fostering two years later. “A colleague and I made a NewYear’s Resolution to volunteer with animals for one year,” sheexplained. “We selected the Humane Society of Missouri becauseof its reputation.”
Her most memorable foster pet was a Beagle mix rescued from ahoarder in 2006. There was nothing appealing about the dog, sherecalled. Alley lacked fur (from mange) and teeth (from eatingrocks). She was beyond shy – so terrified she stayed in a cornerand shook. She would not eat or drink.
In five months, though Kirchhofer did her best, Alley was stillshy. She came out of her corner but returned if anyone elseapproached. “I wondered if Alley would ever get adopted,” she said.
Ruth Kraemer, whose beloved dog had recently died, wanted to meet Alley. It was Kraemer’s birthday and she had received an adoption gift certificate from a friend. When Alley saw Ruth, the dog jumped up on the bench and sat next to her. Toothless and almost furless Alley had found her second chance for a happy home.
To become a foster volunteer or learn of other opportunities, apply online at hsmo.org/volunteer. To purchase an adoption giftcertificate, visit one of our gift shops or shop on-line at hsmo.org.

“It took me four years to talk him into anotherdog,” said Unterreiner, whose family has alwaysenjoyed a canine companion. But the wait was worth it because, she said, Macklind is a perfecttherapy dog. Having the dog re-invigorated Allen, who has struggled for four years with cancer and its after-effects. “I see a change in his attitude.
He’s fighting for health more than ever. Allen lives for her.”After Allen had his cancerous pancreas removed, he became an insulin-dependent diabetic.
Like many dogs, Macklind can sense when his insulin is dangerously low and alerts him.“The first time it happened, she woke him up from a nap,” she said, adding that diabetics could
die in their sleep if their blood sugar falls too low.“What a blessing, for me as much as for Allen,” she praised. “She’s relieved so much stress on
me.” She’s so loving. She never barks, although she will prick up her ears when there’s somethingshe thinks we should know about. We have grandchildren aged 1, 4 and 6, and she is so gentlewith them. She’s a perfect dog. I can’t imagine anyone giving her away.”
Over the years, all the Unterreiner’s dogs have been adopted through HSMO. “We named herMacklind so we would always remember where she came from,” said Pat.

New head of AMCMAKelly Ryan, DVM,
has joined the AnimalMedical Center of Mid-America as its director.Dr. Ryan previouslyserved as regionalmedical director for the Midwest Region of Banfield, managing250 veterinarians and145 hospitals.
“As soon as I foundout what veterinariansdid (at approximatelyage 3), I knew it waswhat I wanted to do,”she said of her careerdecision. Currently she has only one dog—Daisy, a 10-year-oldBlack Labrador
Retriever. With her daily exposure to homeless pets, Dr. Ryan says Daisy has only a slim chance of remaining “an only dog.”
Ask the VetPets Need DentalVisits, Too By Kelly Ryan, DVM
Q: My dog has developed really bad breath and won’t eat any of the crunchy treats I bought for dental health. What else could I try?
A: Bad breath is one of the indicators of dental problems that need professional attention. Poor dental health is responsible for a long list of complications in pets. Heart disease, kidney failure, chronic pain and behavior changes are some of the more serious conditions brought about by untreated dental issues … not to mention pain and the possible loss of teeth from gum disease.
We recommend dental checkups as part of the yearly checkup foryour pet and cleaning on an ‘as needed’ basis.
Common signs of dental problems:• Bad breath • Excessive drooling• Difficulty chewing • Inflamed gums• Behavior changes/aggression
Find out if your pet has healthy teeth and gums at aconsultation at any of our 3 AMCMA locations. Please visit our website www.amcma.org to learn about our dental services and special dental promotions. Call 314-951-1534 to schedule a consultation.
Showgirl HasBackstage Issues
Before finding a life ofadoptive royalty, NorwichTerrier Sophia Her RoyalHighness lived her days as ashow dog. But behind thescenes, life in the spotlightwas putting Sophia’s health injeopardy. Her former ownerwould scrape Sophia’s teeth“clean” with dental toolsbefore every show. Donewithout anesthesia, it was anextremely painful ordeal for
Sophia and one that caused long-term dental damage. When her owner discovered she could not be used for breeding,
Sophia was put up for adoption. Her adopter brought Sophia to theAnimal Medical Center of Mid-America for a checkup and it wasclear to the veterinarian that the Terrier’s teeth were in trouble. Tothe untrained eye, they looked normal, but there were noticeableinjuries to the gum line.
In her new home, Sophia’s royal treatment includes dentalcleanings twice a year (with anesthesia) to keep her in goodhealth. For dogs that have not been so roughly treated as Sophia, cleanings are on an ‘as needed’ basis.
