Landscape Strategy 60
10.2 Soft Landscape Palette
Soft Landscape Palette
A simple green framework of trees, hedging and lawn/meadow
and waterside plants is proposed. The planting palette has
been assembled within a set of overarching criteria to ensure
that the planting is:
- Robust
- Hardy - particularly with regard to wind
- Maximises biodiversity potential
- Contributes to seasonal variation
- Provides nectar
- Is not onerous to maintain
Distinct plant lists have been assembled to support the
aspirations of the character areas and to enrich play
opportunities, ie edge/boundary conditions, sensory
stimulation and backdrop to imaginative play.
Trees
Large canopy trees ie Oak and Lime will help to address the
challenge of the urban heat island, and provide human scale
alongside the proposed buildings.
A palette of largely deciduous trees will ensure the leaf canopy
will confer benefit in summer when it’s needed, but in winter,
when the leaves have fallen, light can reach living space
uninterrupted by leafy canopies.
Where it is desirable to plant trees close to buildings for
greening and/or to reduce views into living space, trees have
been selected that have narrow canopies and are tolerant of
crown management, including pleach form trees.
Hedging
A framework of informal, mixed species hedges and formal
clipped, single species hedges throughout will make a valuable
contribution to the soft landscape structure, with particular
reference to provision of:
- Visual and physical enclosure between private and
communal space, amenity space and cars.
- Low level shelter and microclimate around amenity/
dwell space
- Wildlife habitat and biodiversity
- Seasonal colour
Lawn/Meadow
Extensive grass areas in key areas will allow for flexible play
and socialising with differential mowing, to indicate a hierarchy
of space. Longer grass and wildflower adjacent to homes will
form part of the green buffer which separates public space
from private living space.
Mass planting of spring and autumn bulbs will provide bold
seasonal colour.

Ground conditions / Soiling
The quality of existing ground is such that downward
percolation of ground water is to be avoided.
All new areas of soft landscape will therefore be separated
from the underlying material. Imported topsoil will be laid
at suitable depths over a drainage layer and impermeable
membrane. Excess surface water picked up by the drainage
layer will be discharged into the River Lea without passing
through existing ground.
Irrigation
Given the necessary separation of planting and soil from
existing ground, the soft landscape framework will require
irrigation in perpetuity. A full strategy for irrigation will
be prepared making use of roof and surface water run-off.
Drought tolerant plan material will be included within the
planting palette, whilst balancing other criteria of performance
and aesthetics.
Maintenance and Management
All detailed landscape design will consider ease of
maintenance and management operations to ensure that
the landscape framework is successful in the long term. A
Maintenance & Management Specification and schedules will
be prepared for the entire landscape framework to ensure that
it is managed during establishment to achieve the desired
outcomes, and to provide a dynamic framework for addressing
ongoing maintenance of the green infrastructure, pools and
hardscape.
Aspirations for the maintenance of Leamouth Peninsula
include:
- A Park Ranger to provide an on-site presence and daily
awareness of matters as they arise to ensure that
problems are addressed quickly to avoid deterioration
and safety hazards.
- Green Composting to be managed on site.
- Community Gardening Clubs in designated areas to
encourage engagement and understanding of the
surrounding environment and wildlife that it will support.
