Mountains

• Tallest Landforms• Steep slopes and tall peaks• Single peaks, chains, ranges, mountain

systems (Rocky Mountains=6 mountain systems)

Hills

• Smaller than mountains• Rounded crests

Canyons

• Deep valleys with steep sides• Often a river or stream run along the bottom

of a valley or canyon

Canyons

Plateaus• High landforms with flat surfaces• Often found along the tops of canyons• Can extend for many miles

Plateaus

Mesa

• Similar to plateaus, but smaller• Spanish word for “table”

Plains

• Broad and flat• Lower than their surroundings

River Valley

• A river flowing (usually through a valley)

Flood Plain

• Floor of a river valley on either side of the river

• Water covers when it overflows• Can be hundreds of km wide
