County of Hardeman and State of Tennessee in Consideration of the respect I have for
the people of Color and great desire for their literary and moral welfare both here and
every where I this day give and grant and by these presents do convey unto Henry
Thurmond, Ephraim Champion, Billy Pledge, Thomas Whitmore, George Anderson,
Anthony Jones, & G. P. Bryant (colored) Whom I appoint Trustees in Trust for the use
and benefit of the people of color of this Community a certain Lot or parcel of land (
bounded as follows commencing at a Stake on the extreme Southern border, and on Geo.
W. Smith’s line and at the point where Meredith Thurmonds line, _____ _____Smiths
line Thence East with Said Thurmonds line. One hundred feet to a Stake, Thence North
One hundred feet to a Stake Thence One hundred feet to Smiths line Thence South with
said line to the beginning all in Hardeman County and District No 1. Said Trustees and
their Successors in office Shall erect or cause to be erected a suitable house for School
purposes and if needs be for divine worship, To have and to hold with all the rights and
privileges thereunto belonging for the above names purposes of School house and place
of Divine Worship and the said N. A. D. Bryant doth by these presents bind himself his
heirs and Executors to the above Trustees and their Successors in Office to defend the
right title and interest in the above described lot of land, against the lawful claims of all
persons whatever. In testimony whereof I have this day Set my hand and Seal Sept. 18th
1867.
