Anama is the rostrum of a 19 year old
woman with food disorders, mortified by
her advanced illness but with a clear look
of senseless satisfaction. Her expression
shows a feeling of deep sadness in the exact
point when the tears are about to drop.
This beautiful white soapstone was found by the artist in Colombia nearBogotas plains in a town called Fagua at the moon city.
Diego used the
antique technique of
hand chiseling to give
form to this mind-blowing stone.

Its so incredible
that some think it
isnt a natural
stone, made during
millions of years,
changing and
adopting inimitable
textures and colors;a masterpiece itself.
Its unique pattern of natural
colors come from light pinks to
dark blues, which match
perfectly with its deep white.
Wide open
nose taking
that deep
breath to her
heart.

The rock itself has this
amazing blood like colors
that show bruises along
her face and acts as if she
had painted herself with
the blood of her shame.
The artist used different number of grits in
the sandpapers as always, but this time he
didnt gave an equalized sanding, so he
left hair textures different from lips or
teeth as well as skin, eyes and even so the
rings under eyes; feel to tell.
Hair lost caused
by low vitamin
levels in the
body.

Young ladies from over the
world subscribed to this website,
wrote in the blogs, and
committed themselves in a
religious way with these two
fictional characters in some sort
of sect, where the anorexia and
bulimic even made prayers and
songs for Ana and Mia, changing
the perspective of a life risking
infirmity to a popular deathrace to be the skinniest one.
The title of this piece
reacts to a reality of
premature deaths. As I
researched the web for
anorexia and bulimia
info to come along with
this project, I found a
website about two sort
of goddess, Ana which
represented anorexiaand Mia bulimia.
It s the reality of a condition
in one expression.

Diego Alejandro Sarmiento Suarez is an artist specialized in the old
fashioned Italian way of hand chiseling such as renaissance artist, giving the
stone time and value. At his 23 years has developed his art in a way to
become an stone sculptor; he tried to paint at first, studying different
drawing techniques, having a summer love with this two dimensional art
expression. Feeling bored about his creations and fake artist, throws the
pencil away and gets his hand full of mud, feeling great as a new love
comes along, but once again his art expressions need more voltage and hestarts to think big, huge.
In a summer day, at his 1920s house in the Macarena neighborhood at
Bogotas downtown, he finds a sort of flat chisel in his backyard next to a
hammer, something unusual as he tells because it was laying there as if
someone put them there for him, he grabbed them and ran to his girlfriend
and asked her to go with him on his first stone hunting experience without
any knowledge at all. He found this badly shaped stone made of concrete
and started hitting it; he made his first shape of a face with some skull parts
showing as a protest to the antipersonnel mines in Choc, Colombia. He felt
a connection from the beginning with stone carving, he completely forgotabout mud, and wanted to make pieces that will last for a long time, that
needed more time and effort, where the artist had a full time relationship
with nature and perfection.
He studied deeply the different carving techniques, and decided to focus
only on natural stones. Even though Colombia isnt a place where stone
sculpting is well instructed, Diego has known the way to come along and
be an exceptional representative of Colombias art around the world.
Nowadays Guinchi, as is
known by his close ones, lives in Fonquet, a small
town near Bogot,
Colombia which is famous
for his rock canter; there
he has his workshop and is
where his art is exploded.
