FEATURE STORY
kubik teams up with Frank Gehry on Biodiversity MuseumFrank Ghery’s architectural genius and kubik’s special
expertise in the design and production of exhibit
technology are helping the “Bridge of Life” project
become a reality for Panama’s new Biodiversity Museum.
The Museum showcases Panama’s vast natural, cultural
and economic resources, tracing the environmental and
cultural impact of the Rise of the Isthmus and showing
how that dramatic geographic change altered patterns of
migratory life in North and South America. The Museum,
which was developed with the help of the Amador
Foundation, World Renowned Architect Frank Gehry and
RM Engineering, is scheduled to open in the 4th quarter
of 2012. It will feature the finest in exhibit technology and
design housed in an amazing Frank Gehry building. kubik
has been involved in this exciting development for almost
a decade and is responsible for the design, development,
and fabrication of film and interactive displays, as well as
the installation and commissioning of the museum itself.

Maltbie moves forward on the Discovery Park of America When the new Discovery Park of America opens in
Western Tennessee in late 2012, the world will see
an entirely new level of interactive education and
entertainment: 100,000 sq. ft. of advanced exhibit
space of curvilinear white forms; boundless walls
of glass; multi-level atriums; and an observation
tower that rises two hundred feet into the air to
give visitors a breathtaking view of the surrounding
gardens and countryside.
Always eager for a new challenge, the Maltbie
Interactives Team has already begun the mammoth
task of bringing the Park’s diversity of exhibits to
life, working at every step in partnership with Thinc
Design and Verner Johnson Inc., a Boston based
architectural firm.
Discovery Park of America is a fifty-acre multi-faceted
learning complex that will set new standards across
the board. Built on the driving principle of “Learn by
Doing”, the Park is designed to enrich the educational
experience of visitors of all ages and to challenge them
to achieve their full potential. A featured exhibit is an
interactive Alternative Energy Gallery featuring a 20’
tall representation of a turbine generator - powered
by visitor generated energy. Another amazing exhibit
will be the 36’ tall Giant Human figure overlooking
the entrance to the Discovery Center’s Grand Hall.
Young visitors will be able to explore the human
body and learn about body mechanics from inside
the giant figure!

kubik goes wild with Science NorthIn September 2010, kubik joined the Science North development team with a challenging assignment: the fabrication and installation of a new generation of
live-animal habitats, and the creation of a complete set
of supporting interactive displays.
The team included environmental, communications
and production experts from Science North, D+C
Communications of Montreal and kubik in Toronto. Our
joint task was to transform 6,500 sq. ft. of space into an
immersive ecosystem exhibit with three distinct areas
representing the Forest, Wetlands, and Lakes and Rivers
of the great Northern Ontario landscape.
The goal was to provide a rich and engaging sensory
experience that immersed visitors into a range of natural
environments, many featuring live animals. The animals
are housed in sophisticated enclosures designed to
maintain a healthy environment for the animals and
provide a great visitor experience. Each habitat was
individually developed to integrate the appropriate life
support systems into unique and realistic rockwork and
vegetation– the technology is almost entirely invisible!
Intricate interactive displays, all built by kubik, combine
entertainment with education, ensuring that each visit
is an unforgettable experience.

Amsterdam Motor Show: Back on trackThe April 2011 AutoRai event in Amsterdam provided ample proof that with fresh thinking and careful management,
spectacular events can still be created in a cost-conscious world. Even with a focus on cost-efficiency, 2011’s
exhibitors had plenty of opportunity to express their individual brand identities to the nearly 300,000 visitors. A
range of premieres and concept cars were on display, plus a range of exciting live shows featuring the latest news
from the automotive industry.
The 2011 show was a development of kubik’s renowned exhibition concept for AutoRAI, first produced as an
innovative response to the 2008 economic crisis. The ultimate result in earlier years and again in 2011 was a
maximum-impact show for more-than-acceptable costs. kubik designed and executed this concept successfully for
many of the most prestigious brands in the industry, including Opel/GM, Chevrolet, Mitsubishi, LandRover, Jaguar,
Aston Martin, Lotus and the spectacular Fisker electric sports car.

Maltbie a natural choice for Utah MuseumMaltbie’s unique expertise in museum exhibit development was a perfect fit for the new Utah Museum of Natural
History. Located in Salt Lake City, the Museum is scheduled to open at the end of 2011, in a new 37,500 sq.
ft. permanent exhibit designed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates. The gallery spaces will include eight thematic
areas covering topics ranging from Utah’s ancient ecosystems and first peoples to the cutting-edge science of
biogeography and genetics.
Maltbie started work during the pre-construction phase, assisting the designer and owner with budget and
schedule development as well as technical advice. Our scope of work included the fabrication and installation of all
the exhibit components including fully conserved cases, extensive scenic elements and a comprehensive graphics
package utilizing direct to substrate technology.

For Trojan Technologies, Water Confidence equals Peace of Mind.Trojan Technologies is the market leader in UV water
treatment technology, respected for producing
Ultraviolet technologies that are cleaner, greener
and more efficient than chlorine based systems. Their
mission is expressed in the phrase “Water Confidence” -
the peace of mind that comes from knowing your water
is truly clean. Trojan recently challenged kubik to find
a tradeshow interpretation of “Water Confidence” that
would reinforce their brand strength and have a big
impact on visitors.
With the tranquility of a Zen garden as inspiration, the
kubik team created the Trojan “Peace of Mind” campaign.
The exhibit space was defined by surrounding walls
of upright acrylic tubes that mimicked bamboo, with
many of them internally lit to suggest Trojan’s UV lamp
technology. Inside the booth, we created a modern
Japanese rock garden with Trojan’s unique UV lamps and
purification equipment serving as the stones and the
traffic flow moving around them as the sand. Featured
throughout were graphics of people meditating near
pools of water and bamboo fountains. The result, when
combined with a kubik designed program of interactive
activities before and during the show, was everything
Trojan expected it to be.

A new global look for DSMDSM is a major Chemical Company with head-offices
in The Netherlands and China and business units in
Europe, the USA and Asia. kubik has worked with
different DSM Business units for a long time, so we were
delighted when, following a recent global corporate
identity update, DSM asked kubik to translate their new
brand positioning into 3-dimensional presentations
for large exhibition stands, B2B events, international
business presentations, and components for small pop-
up settings.
kubik Amsterdam took the lead in a project with global
reach. The project was our biggest yet for DSM, but we
had one distinct advantage: the same dedicated and
experienced people who had worked with the DSM
brand for years were on this job as well.
Our resources from around the world were called
upon to provide production and logistics expertise,
and we delivered turnkey exhibitions, business unit
interiors and special presentations all over the world, in
exhibition centers, congress venues, hotel lobbies, and
other challenging venues.

invited to become a partner in the execution of Shell’s international exhibition program and work together with
their design firm, Imagination – it was an appealing challenge.

working successfully with our clients’ design agencies. Today, kubik manages an especially developed exhibition
set that is frequently used for many international conferences and exhibitions all over Europe. In addition, kubik

Clients are central at Zurich USA, and central in kubik’s designsThe new tradeshow environment that kubik designed
for Zurich USA’s appearance at RIMS in Vancouver
during May 2011, is a showcase that helps visitors grasp
the depth and breadth of support that is available
through the HelpPoint concept. At Zurich, clients are
central, and for the kubik design team, that was the
beginning of the creative process.
The design intent was to bring this “central” experience
onto the show floor. The strategic flow of traffic created
a unique “Help is on the way” experience. From the
moment of entering into the exhibit, and through
each of the engaging stages within, each visitor was
immersed in an environment that presented Zurich as
being focused on them and their needs.
