KODIAC COLT LEADSSTRONG SESSION AT TATTS
By Emma Berry
The significant spending of various branches of the Maktoum
family has continued to swell the coffers of Tattersalls' October
Sale and the various agents and trainers deployed by the sheikhs
again dominated the higher level of trade throughout Tuesday's
second Book 2 session.
Top of the pops was the sole yearling in the catalogue from
Micheal Magill's Bellewstown Stud (lot 977), a half-brother to
GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner Vale Of York (Ire) (Invincible
Spirit {Ire}) by the perennially popular Kodiac (Ire). John
Ferguson's reserve proved to be deeper than that of trainer
Joseph Murphy, who pushed him all the way to the clear top
price for Book 2 so far of 380,000gns.
For Magill, who bred the colt and keeps less than a handful of
mares at his Navan farm, topping the October Sale was nothing
new.
"It's actually the second time we've been on top here," he
confessed. "Back in the '80s we sold an Alzao colt to Henry Cecil
and he was one of the first to pass the six-figure mark. This colt
is without doubt the best we've had on the farm and I hope he
will become the third Group 1 winner we've sold to Godolphin
as we also sold them Vale Of York and Classic Cliche, who was a
pinhook." Cont. p2
FULL FIELD DRAWN FOR CAULFIELD CUP There is strong European interest in Saturday=s G1 BMW
Caulfield Cup with three confirmed starters including
Godolphin=s Scottish (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), Sir Isaac Newton (GB)
(Galileo {Ire}) from Ballydoyle and Articus (Fr) (Areion {Ger}),
trained in Germany by Andreas Wohler. Charlie Appleby thinks
he has the right horse for the A$3-million race and with Scottish
having drawn gate seven, Appleby is more than hopeful. AI'm
delighted with barrier seven," said Appleby. "It gives Kerrin
[McEvoy] plenty of options. If we can get a nice clear run into
the race we are hopeful of being very competitive." The German
challenger Articus, drawn in stall eleven, won a Group 3 in
Hannover in July and has since been purchased by Australian
Bloodstock, whose Jamie Lovett commented, "I would suggest
he would position up forward of midfield. It will depend on
where the speed comes from. A few of those lightweights will
probably roll forward from out wide.@ Cont. p9

Magill bought the session-topper's 18-year-old dam Red Vale
(Ire) (Halling) as a foal from Shadwell for Ir,15,000 and feels this
may be her last offspring as she has no foal this year and is not
currently in foal.
With almost 29 million gns spent collectively on yearlings last
week, Sheikhs Mohammed and Hamdan, their cousin Sheikh
Mohammed Obaid, and various Rabbah associates accounted
for almost a third of the Book 1 turnover
and their contribution to Book 2 will also
be sizeable by the close of play
Wednesday. By the end of Tuesday's
session, Shadwell had bought 27
yearlings, Godolphin seven and Rabbah
20.
Again the smaller number of horses
catalogued for Book 2 led to a shortfall in
aggregate, the 29 fewer sold than in the
corresponding session of 2015 returning a
total of 13,241,000gns (-14%). However,
the median was unchanged at 50,000gns and the average fell by
just 1% at 66,874gns. The clearance rate rose by a point to 83%
for 198 horses sold from 238 offered.
Following a first-day outlay slightly in excess of 2 million gns for
18 yearlings, the Shadwell team's enthusiasm for October
yearlings showed no signs of abating during the second session
of Book 2 with horses bought on the day being headed by
Kilminfoyle House Stud's son of Kyllachy (GB) (lot 912) at
270,000gns.
A half-brother to the listed-winning sprinter Aetna (GB)
(Indesatchel {Ire}), the February-born colt was bred by Terry
Holdcroft's Bearstone Stud, which sold him last December to
leading pinhooker Michael Fitzpatrick for
35,000gns. The buzz had obviously filtered
around the sales ground as, when the colt
entered the ring, the gangway suddenly
filled with agents and pinhookers, with the
final say being settled between Angus Gold
and Ross Doyle.
"Everyone sees it differently, but I
thought he was the single most athletic
individual I've seen this week," said Gold,
who offered that the son of Listed Hilary
Needler Trophy winner On The Brink (GB)
(Mind Games {GB}) is likely to be trained by Owen Burrows. "The
mare has done well with some not-so-fashionable stallions and
we're just trying to buy horses who will win races." Cont. p3

The colt was the star performer on a good day for Kilminfoyle
House Stud, which has sold four Book 2 yearlings for an average
price of 151,250gns.
Kyllachy was very much in vogue on Tuesday with a
full-brother to the durable and talented mud-lover Penitent
(GB) (lot 931) being another colt added to Gold's list at
260,000gns after the Shadwell agent saw off a determined
Roger Varian. Cheveley Park Stud's dual scorer Pious (GB)
(Bishop Of Cashel {GB}) has been a dependable matron,
producing 10 winners from her 11 runners, including Pentitent's
full-brother Supplicant, winner of the G2 Mill Reef S.
Breaking a Maktoum-related stranglehold towards the top of
the table was lot 1024, a Sea The Stars colt out of a winning
Peintre Celebre half-sister to leading French sire Le Havre (Ire)
(Noverre). The Ling Tsui-bred May foal consigned through
Mount Coote Stud found favour with Richard Brown of
Blandford Bloodstock, who didn't name his client but stated
that the colt would be trained in Newmarket by William Haggas.
He said, "Sea The Stars' record speaks for itself and this is a
smashing colt, though he is still quite immature due to his
foaling date. He still has some developing to do over the next
six months."
Holy Roman Emperor has built a solid reputation in Hong
Kong, thanks largely to his four-time Group 1-winning son
Designs On Rome (Ire), and another of his colts was bought with
Hong Kong as his future target by Alastair Donald for
250,000gns. The agent claimed lot 969 from the Newsells Park
draft on behalf of an unnamed Hong Kong-based client and said
that he would initially be trained in Lambourn by Charlie Hills.
"We've had a bit of luck with Holy Roman Emperor and this is
the nicest I've seen--he was our pick of the expensive horses,"
said Donald of the second foal of Raving Monsun (GB) (Monsun
{Ger}).
Immediately preceding the Holy Roman Emperor colt was a son
of the late Azamour (lot 968), who was one of 11 Book 2
purchases by Roger Varian at 230,000gns. That return
represented a decent result for James Stewart, who bred the
half-brother to G3 Geoffrey Freer S. winner Agent Murphy (GB)
(Cape Cross {Ire}) at his Wellsummers Stud in Marlborough.
Further Group winners to have emerged from the family for
Stewart are Hatta Fort (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}), winner of the G2
Superlative S., and his half-sister Blue Bayou (GB) (Bahamian
Bounty {GB}), who also recorded her major victory at Newmarket
in the G3 Sweet Solera S.
The leading filly of the day was a classy-looking daughter of
Fastnet Rock (Aus) (lot 830) out of a Montjeu (Ire) half-sister to
G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and GI Keeneland Turf Mile S.
winner Landseer (GB) (Danehill). Offered by the Swinburn
family's Genesis Green Stud, she was bought by Amanda
Skiffington in partnership with Paul Shanahan and M.V. Magnier
for 240,000gns.
Consignor Michael Swinburn said of the half-brother to treble
winner Viscount Barfield (GB) (Raven's Pass), who was bred by
his brother Walter, "She's been a queen from day one. The
whole family is so good looking. Walter bought her granddam
Sabria and we decided on a Fastnet Rock cover because he is a
son of Danehill, he gets as many good fillies as colts, and the
cross of Danehill over Sadler's Wells has been so successful."
One of three yearlings by the subfertile Reckless Abandon
(Exchange Rate) in Book 2 hit the leader board when Rabbah
Bloodstock stepped up its spending to go to 200,000gns for lot
851, Pier House Stud's colt out of the Danetime (Ire) mare May
Day Queen (Ire). A half-brother to Listed Dragon S. runner-up
Mukhmal (Ire) (Bahamian Bounty {GB}), the colt's family received
a further boost recently with Listed winner Asidious Alexander
(Ire) (Windsor Knot {Ire})--a half-sister to May day Queen--twice
being placed in Group 3 company.
The early success for first-crop yearlings of Camelot (Ire),
Society Rock (Ire) and Intello (GB) has been chronicled in these
pages and it's worth keeping an eye on the progress of Cheveley
Park Stud's top sprinter Lethal Force (Ire), who has had 12 Book 2
yearlings sell so far for an average of 62,250gns. Among the
buyers are Con Marnane, Roger Varian, Eddie Lynam and Andrew
Balding.
One final session of Book 2 takes place today from 10am, with
Book 3 set to start Thursday.

>ELITE= SPRINTER TO RACE ON When the Sir Mark Prescott trained Marsha (Ire) (Acclamation
{GB}) won the Listed Land O=Burns S. at Ayr in June in facile
fashion she seemed to have all the hallmarks of a Group 1
sprinter. However having been beaten in two subsequent
pattern races she went off a 16-1 shot when tackling Group 1
company for the first time in the Qatar Prix de l=Abbaye at
Chantilly on Arc day. However the Elite Racing Club homebred
rose to the occasion beating
Washington DC (Ire) (Zoffany
{Ire}) and Mecca=s Angel (Ire)
(Dark Angel {Ire}) to ensure a
winter of dreams lies in store
for her many owners. "The
plan is for her to stay in
training next year. She'll be
turned out this week for a
holiday and come back in around the New Year," said Dan
Downie, racing manager for owners Elite Racing. The
programme for a Group 1 sprinter tends to be fairly
straightforward and Downie sees no reason to complicate
matters, though he is keeping an open mind regarding her best
trip. "Obviously we'll have to go for the top sprints. Whether
we'll run her over six furlongs, I don't know. She just looked
very good over five at Chantilly. She has won over six so at this
stage we'll keep our options open. She seems to be settling as
she's getting older and more mature which will help. We'll sit
down with Sir Mark in the New Year to discuss plans."
O=BRIEN JUGGLING AS RECORD IN SIGHT Bobby Frankel set a record of 25 Group/Grade 1 wins in a
season in 2003 and this weekend could see Aidan O=Brien close
in on that record haul. O=Brien trained his 20th top level flat
winner in 2015 when Churchill (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) won the G1
Dubai Dewhurst S. at Newmarket last week and with four Group
1s up for grabs at Ascot on Saturday not to mention the
Caulfield Cup in Australia and the Canadian International at
Woodbine on Sunday, the Ballydoyle trainer could theoretically
even break the record. The biggest problem O=Brien seems to
have is splitting up his runners such is the arsenal at his
disposal. Some races are more straightforward than others.
Sir Isaac Newton (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and Idaho (Ire) (Galileo
{Ire}) are his only representatives for their Australian and
Canadian challenge on Saturday and Sunday respectively. It=s a
bit more complicated with the fillies. O=Brien has the Galileo
daughters Minding (Ire), Alice Springs (Ire), Found (Ire) and
Seventh Heaven (Ire) all slated for action at Ascot on Saturday.
Maximizing each filly=s chance while also giving the team its best
chance of Group 1 success is a tricky balancing act, made
somewhat easier when they all share the same ownership. "The
lads are going to talk about it, probably on Wednesday, and will
decide what to do then. Found has two options and Minding has
three. It looks like the ground is going to be nice and we'll see
what they decide," reported the trainer. Alice Springs has had a
busy season running eight times so far and O=Brien=s skill as a
trainer is clear when the 3-year-old=s last two runs have been
career bests. "It's possible Alice Springs could go to the Breeders'
Cup, but a lot is going to depend on where Minding is going to
go," added O'Brien. With six runs under belt this season
compared to eight for both Found and Alice Springs, Minding is
relatively fresh and she appears to be the key horse among the
quartet. "Whenever we know what way the lads are going to go
with Minding then the others will slot into different other
places,@ summed up the master of Ballydoyle.Marsha | Scoop Dyga

DEATH OF MARJU Derrinstown Stud has reported the death of one of their
former globally respected stallions, Marju (Ire) (Last Tycoon
{GB}BFlame Of Tara {GB}, by Artaius). He died of natural causes
at 28 years of age. Bred by Ms Pat O=Kelly=s Kilcarn Stud, Marju
had a beautiful pedigree being a three-parts brother to the
brilliant five-time Group 1
winner Salsabil (GB) (Sadler=s
Wells), and he showed
himself to be one of the best
milers of his generation
when winning the G1 St
James=s Palace S. at Ascot in
1991 for trainer John Dunlop
and owner Hamdan Al
Maktoum. Marju was retired to Derrinstown at the end of his
3-year-old season proving an instant success in his new career,
siring the G1 Prix Vermeille and G1 Yorkshire Oaks winner My
Emma (GB), and the G1 Prix de Diane winner Sil Sila (Ire) from
his first crop. While he continued to sire top class horses in
Europe, in particular fillies like Soviet Song (Ire), Lightning Pearl
(Ire) and Bethrah (Ire), it was further afield that he really
stamped his presence. His sons Viva Pataca (GB) and
Indigenous (Ire) were both legends in Hong Kong winning
twelve Group 1 races between them while Chinchon (Ire) and
Marju Snip (NZ) provided Group 1 success in USA and Australia
respectively. In total Marju sired 12 individual Group 1 winners
of 21 Group 1 races during his 19 years at stud, and his
reputation as a broodmare sire is also well established, his
influence in this sphere recently evident with the victory of
Marsha (Acclamation (GB)BMarlinka {Ire}, by Marju {Ire}) in the
G1 Prix de l=Abbaye at Chantilly.
PROGRESSIVE BUDGET FOR IRISH RACING It was budget day in Ireland on Tuesday and it heralded good
news for Irish racing as the Minister For Agriculture Michael
Creed announced a Government grant of almost i64m to the
racing industry in 2017. It represents the largest contribution
made by Government to racing, exceeding the previous peak
figure of i62.6m pledged in 2008. This Government support,
which is i4.8m more than was received in 2016 is very positive
news for Horse Racing Ireland who administer racing=s finances.
As the contribution has steadily grown in recent years HRI=s
focus has been to increase Irish prizemoney while also reducing
the costs associated with being an owner, whilst also supporting
racecourses in their attempt to improve the facilities on offer to
Irish racegoers.
This news should provide further impetus
to these endeavors and ultimately lead to a
more vibrant sport and industry. The budget
is also good news for HRI in a week when it=s
chairman Joe Keeling and other HRI board
members are being called to sit before an
Oireachtas (Special Government) committee
on Thursday over their handling of HRI chief
executive Brian Kavanagh=s contract
extension. Kavanagh has served two seven
year terms as HRI CEO and was granted a
third term of five years despite it being
contra to Government regulations over the employment of CEOs
of semi-state organisations.

Caulfield Cup Draw cont. from p1
Aidan O=Brien=s Sir Isaac Newton (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) ran some
solid races in Group 1 company over the summer and he is
drawn between the other European pair in stall nine. TJ
Comerford is overseeing the Coolmore colt=s preparation in
Australia and is delighted with how he has adjusted to his new
surroundings. "This lad is thriving and he looks magnificent, said
Comerford. "He seems to be doing everything right in his work
and I'm very pleased with him."
Current favourite for the race is the Ciaron Maher trained
Jameka (Aus) (Myboycharlie {Ire}), second to Hartnell (GB)
(Authorized {Ire}) in the G1 Turnbull S. last time and the filly will
jump from barrier thirteen on Saturday. Maher is philosophical
about the draw and told Racing And Sports, "It's not the outside
and it's not the inside. You need to draw a barrier to win the
race but I cannot control that. I can only control what I can and
that's getting the horse fit and she's in good order."

STAR WITNESS COLT TOPS MM DAY ONE A colt by Star Witness (Aus) (Starcraft {NZ}) topped the opening
day of the Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YOs in Training Sale. The
session=s figures failed to match those posted last year; there
was A$5.757 million worth of juveniles traded at an average
price of almost A$50,000. 116 of the 167 lots offered changed
hands giving a clearance rate of 71%. "For obvious reasons we
were nervous coming into this sale," Magic Millions Managing
Director Vin Cox said. "As the results reveal, the diversity of
buyers both internationally and domestically is rewarding for all
concerned. We must congratulate Aquis Farm on selling the top
priced lot today at their first Gold Coast 2YOs in Training Sale.
They have fully invested in the industry and it is great for them
and the Queensland industry."
The above mentioned Aquis Farm sale topper, a chestnut
offered as lot 177, was
purchased by
Constance Cheng for
A$315,000 and is now
destined for Singapore.
Cheng was delighted to
secure her number one
pick of the sale and
revealed the colt was a
birthday present for
her partner. "He's a
strong, well built colt and a brilliant mover," Cheng said. "I'm
delighted to have purchased who I thought was the standout
horse of the sale. He looks an early two-year-old type and has a
great temperament. I'm very happy," Cheng added. Lot 97 was
also in demand and the colt by Sebring (Aus) (More Than Ready),
offered by Washpool Lodge, sold to New Zealand based agent
Paul Beamish for A$200,000. The third highest price of the day
came for Kenmore Lodge's colt by Commands (Aus) (Danehill),
lot 188, who sold to Stephen Gray from Singapore for A$160,000.
The dam Fluffy Duck (NZ) (Tale Of The Cat) has already produced
two stakes winners including the colt=s full-brother Atomic (Aus).
The top priced filly, one of three lots to sell for A$150,000, was
lot 80 by Your Song (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}). The juvenile
offered by Profits Lodge was sold to the Ridgeport Syndicate and
is likely to join the stables of leading trainer Neville Parnham.
Day Two of the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YOs in Training
Sale commences at 12 noon (Qld time) on Wednesday.

Brody=s Cause Retired cont.
Last seen checking in sixth in a loaded renewal of the GI
Belmont S. June 11, the 3-year-old retires with a record of 8-3-0-
1 and earnings of $1,168,138.
Bred by Gabriel Duignan, William Arvin, Jr. and Petaluma
Bloodstock, the $350,000 KEESEP yearling buy is out of Sweet
Breanna, a daughter of Grade II winner and GI Breeders= Cup
Juvenile Fillies runner-up Sweet Roberta (Roberto).
Brody=s Cause has already taken up residence at Spendthrift
and is available for inspection.
Torrealba Q&A cont.
TDN: Between the accomplishments on the racetrack and your
recent success at the sales, I=m sure this has been an exciting
year for you. How have you enjoyed your initial time at Three
Chimneys, and what are your primary goals going forward?
GT: We are committed and passionate about our investment in
Three Chimneys. My wife and I have moved to Kentucky and my
son just started at the Lexington School. Our goal is to focus on
building the stallion
operation to its past glory,
whether it's buying a
stallion prospect off the
track or to breed him and
race him with partners or
ourselves. We are on a
mission to find the next
Seattle Slew. I sold Cara
Rafaela carrying
Bernardini a long time
ago. He is the poster child
for what we are looking to do...We are committed to buy and
breed the best dirt racehorses that we possibly can. We have
built a core group of top quality mares that will give us the best
chance to do that, but we=re also very commercial, and sell our
product at market--that has always been in our plans--and we
proved that in 2015 by selling over $12 million worth of
yearlings and 2-year-olds. We're off to another good start this
year. Cont. p4

Will Take Charge | A. Coglianese
Gun Runner | Coady photo
TDN: You mentioned partnerships. You have notably formed
some unique stallion partnerships with Willis Horton on Will
Take Charge and with Dogwood Stables on Palace Malice--is
this a strategy you=re using with younger horses as well as
stallions?
GT: If someone likes one of our yearlings and wants to partner,
we are happy to do it because we believe in our product. Take
this year's Derby for
instance. We placed
with Gun Runner, a
future stallion for us,
whom we own in
partnership with Ron
Winchell and Ben
Leon. We believe in
partnerships and
were able to stay in
for a leg or a half of
several colts that
sold in
September...We are
noticing that we are not alone in the partnership game--it seems
to be a trend. Sharing risk and reward equally with a partner is
very rewarding, when the horse is a real runner. You get to
celebrate together and you limit both parties' downside if it
doesn't work out.
TDN: What do you see in Gun Runner that makes you think he
will be a successful stallion?
GT: Gun Runner is a very typical example. Although we did not
breed him, we bought into him as a yearling and also acquired
the whole family
when we did the
partnership with
Besilu [Stables]. He's
already from the
family of a very
successful stallion
who was deceased
prematurely, Saint
Liam. And of course,
Candy Ride is a
bloodline that is
open to all the A. P. Indy, Mr. Prospector and Northern Dancer
lines. It's a great cross for every good American bloodline there
is. The physical is second to none, the pedigree is great. With his
race record, he might have been a little unlucky, but he was
third in the [GI Kentucky] Derby and the [GI] Travers S. and he
has a couple Grade II wins. We think there is a Grade I in his
future. He's the whole package...He's a horse we want to send
our best mares to.
TDN: Lane's End has made headlines this year buying well-bred
and pricey colts as stallion prospects--has Three Chimneys
been looking at juveniles or yearlings to buy at auction with
the same goal of adding to your current six-stallion roster?
GT: Most definitely, that's what we have been doing since we
started. The stallion market is as competitive as it gets, so you
need to be on every side of it--horses in training that will be
future stallions. We have assembled a quality broodmare band,
and each mare could individually produce a stallion. Everything
we do, at the end of the day, goes toward filling up our stallion
barn with the best quality there can be... Our plan is definitely
stallions, stallions and stallions.
TDN: Stud fees have been on the rise in the last few years. Do
you have any concerns about the market's ability to support
increased production costs?Cont. p5

Carina Mia | Sarah K. Andrew
GT: That's a very important concern we have. There is no way
that we're going to be successful if our clients are not happy. We
think about that at our stallion barn every day, and we believe
we have great horses that are good buys....Today at Three
Chimneys we are very price sensitive. While we paid a lot for
Will Take Charge, we are not looking for payback in the first
three or four years. We want to make him the best stallion over
the long haul. We're very proud of our stallions...I think our
customers will start getting rewarded, and this November we'll
see the first foals by Will Take Charge and Strong Mandate at
auction. I think we're in for a good November.
TDN: I know you have placed an emphasis on finding producers
who excel on dirt, and by association, American racetracks.
Can you talk a bit more about how you=re honing in on these
types of broodmares?
GT: We are focusing even more than ever on producing dirt
stallions with our mares, even though I personally do enjoy turf
racing. Therefore, we will be selling a number of top quality turf
fillies and mares to supplement and highlight our November
consignment. It is important to always be in the market trading
and we will be doing that as well.
TDN: About how many broodmares are in the band now and
what percentage of the foal crop will be seen at public
auction?
GT: We have 80-something now, but our target is to cover about
60 mares this year. We
tend to take the majority
of our product to the
market, both to raise
capital and to find
prospective partners on
colts we hope will become
stallions one day.
TDN: One of your in-house broodmare prospects is Carina Mia.
Will she stay in training next year? Are there any Three
Chimneys stallions you think would suit her?
GT: That's what we're hoping for. She's from one of the three
top South American families. I could go on and on giving
examples of South American families that have produced in
America and Europe...I believe very much in this outcross. That's
something that has happened, and will happen.

That's how America was built, at the end of the day. As for
next year, that depends on Bill [Mott]--if he tells us that we can
win a couple more nice races, we would love to keep racing her.
But if she retires, she will be a very interesting addition. It would
be a close call between [sending her to] Will Take Charge and
Palace Malice.
TDN: Looking back at September, did you see any market
trends that surprised you or caused you to change plans at all?
GT: Not really, the first two
days did not feel that strong--
but our better horses were
on the third day and it caught
fire, they all sold well. It's a
very competitive market out
there for a good horse, and at
the middle of the market, it
felt like there was still a lot of
competition.
TDN: What has been the
most rewarding part of your
experience since taking over
a controlling interest at the farm? And the most challenging?
GT: At the end of the day, the people at Three Chimneys are the
secret to this resurgence of the farm. People recognize that a big
effort has been done since we took over, and I truly believe that
it's really teamwork. The people that are with us are the
greatest. It's what I'm most proud of. If you go to September,
and last September, it's really amazing how our product has
been received. And that kind of recognition doesn't come lightly,
because people are putting their money where their mouth is.
They're not only saying we're doing a good job--they're paying
for it. It's rewarding to be associated with a world-class farm
with world-class horses and world-class people. It's racing at the
highest level there is.
As for a challenge, I always thought the stallion market was
competitive. It's actually three times more competitive than I
thought.
TDN: Obviously you have a long-term outlook for your
investment in Three Chimneys. What are you looking forward
to in the coming months?
GT: We have some important strategic changes on the horizon
with the goal of further enhancing our stallion roster. We plan
to sell our Fayette County division and will concentrate our
operations in Woodford County where our stallion operations
are based, and where we have almost 900 acres. This will allow
us to be more efficient, and keep us focused on our goal of
offering both owner/breeders and commercial breeders the
best stallion options in the market. The most exciting thing
ahead is that we will showcase a number of impressive
weanlings by Will Take Charge and Strong Mandate this
November. We are proud of our product and want to show
breeders the level of support that we put in to help make our
stallions a success.

UNUSUAL HEAT PENSIONED Top California sire Unusual Heat (Nureyev--Rossard {Den}, by
Glacial {Den}) has been pensioned from stud duties at the age of
26 and will enjoy retirement at Harris Farm.
AIt is with great emotion that we have to announce the
retirement of Unusual Heat,@ said Harris Auerbach, managing
partner of M. Auerbach LLC. AHe=s been remarkable and even in
his final season at stud in 2016 managed to get 25 of 30 bred
mares in foal. It=s been an amazing run and I=m happy that >Heat=
can now just relax and enjoy the rest of his days just being a
horse.@
A three-time stakes winner and Group 3 runner-up during his
European campaign, Unusual Heat had a brief U.S. campaign in
California in 1996 and retired with a record of 16-6-2-2 and
earnings of $142,605. The $250,000 BARMAR juvenile purchase
is a son of Swedish Horse of the
Year and Danish champion
Rossard, a four-time Group 1
winner in Europe and heroine of
the 1984 GI Flower Bowl H. on
these shores.
Under the ownership of
Madeline Auerbach and Barry
Abrams, Unusual Heat stood the
last six years of his stallion
career at Harris Farms in
Coalinga, C.A. His runners have
amassed $52.4 million on the
racetrack and he has sired 12
graded stakes winners, five of which were Grade I winners, and
a total of 53 stakes winners.
Unusual Heat has been California Leading Sire six times and is
responsible for 15 California champions, included two-time
California Horse of the Year Acclamation, who won the Eclipse
Award for top older horse in 2011 after winning five Grade Is
that year. This year he was represented by speedy ATDN Rising
Star@ Pacific Heat, a three-time stakes winner who most recently
captured Santa Anita=s Evening Jewel S.
Unusual Heat, an Inspiration for Aftercare Efforts... Unusual Heat may have only raced for Madeline Auerbach
three times, but, through his success as a stallion and the
inspiration he has provided her, the 26-year-old stallion has
made a big impact on her life.
It is because of Unusual Heat
that Auerbach has become one of
the biggest proponents for
Thoroughbred aftercare, started
the California Retirement
Management Account (CARMA)
and was a founding director of
the Thoroughbred Aftercare
Alliance (TAA).
AThe truth about Unusual Heat
is not only was he an amazing
stallion and his progeny have
earned an amazing amount of
money, but because of the platform that he afforded me, he
gave me the ability to gather the troops and get to work on

Thoroughbred aftercare,@ Auerbach said. ABased on him,
because he gave me a voice I otherwise wouldn=t have had and
was such an amazing stallion, you get a lot of notoriety that
comes with that, and I was able to turn it into a lot of aftercare
acitivities.@
The California resident continued, AI started CARMA. I=m a vice
chair of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. I get a lot of
opportunities because of him to speak to people and they pay
attention to me. I guess they think because I was lucky enough
to have him that they should listen to me. It=s been amazing. I
think that he as a racehorse has provided the impetus for
aftercare for a tremendous number of horses. I=m very grateful
for the opporunity and glad I was able to do that.@
Auerbach, who sits on the CARMA board as the Founders Chair
and is still a Vice President of TAA, did not know anything about
aftercare options until after she retired Unusual Heat in the late
1990s.
AI didn=t know about aftercare until after I had [Unusual Heat]
and got a lot of other really good horses,@ Auerbach explained. AI
got down the line to the point where it was time for them to be
done with racing and some of them weren=t suitable for the
breeding shed. I began to look around and find out what was
available to horses after they are done racing and, quite frankly,
I was appalled. There was so no concerted movement. There
was a place here and a place there. There were a lot of people
doing a lot of very good work, but there wasn=t a road map.
There was nothing to help you. If you had a horse that needed
to be retired you were pretty much on your own.@
The English native added, AWe=ve seen a change in the last 10
years of activity and organizations that have grown up to be
responsible and take care of these horses. I=m very proud to be a
part of it. I=m proud of the industry response and I=m pleased
that I was able to be useful in that response.@

1st Dam: Grecian Wings (SW, $165,295), by Mr. Greeley
2nd Dam: Turning Around, by Exclusive Era
3rd Dam: Mrs. Roberts, by Singh
Hot Seat sailed home by 13 1/2 lengths in his six-furlong debut
at Parx Sept. 6 and was sent off the prohibitive 1-5 favorite to
repeat the effort on the stretch-out to two turns. He broke
sharply and took the lead into the first turn, but ceded his
position to longshot Late Breaking News (Jump Start) and settled
just off that foe through an opening half in :46 3/5. Hot Seat
reeled in the pacesetter turning for home and strode clear down
the lane under a motionless Paco Lopez to best Late Breaking
News by seven lengths. A $260,000 KEESEP yearling, Hot Seat is
a half to Allwewantforxmas (Songandaprayer, MSP, $211,794);
and to Hard Enough (Hard Spun, GSW, $351,145). Grecian Wings
most recent registered foal is an unraced 2-year-old named On

was away slowly before closing to be second in his 5 1/2-furlong
unveiling at this track Sept. 5. The 6-5 favorite, off a step slowly
again, chased the pacesetters down the backstretch and surged
into contention with a powerful rally on the bend. He turned
back Archvillian (Archarcharch) with a furlong to run and drew
clear to score by 1 1/2 lengths. Alex Again, who sold for $15,000
at last year=s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October sale, worked a
furlong in :10 2/5 before selling for $170,000 at this year=s Fasig-

second start, the bay filly was sent off the 6-5 second choice and
dropped back to trail the field early. She closed stoutly turning
for home, closed relentlessly down the lane to overtake Ize It
(Point Given) in deep stretch and sailed clear to win by three
lengths. Silent Poetry, who was purchased with this foal in utero
for $50,000 at the 2012 Keeneland November sale, produced a

GISW Java=s War Retired to Colebrook Farm:
Charles Fipke homebred Java=s War (War Pass--Java {GB}, by
Rainbow Quest) has been retired and will stand at Colebrook
Farm in Canada for C$3,000.
While under the care of Ken McPeek, Java=s War bested
eventual GI Belmont S. winner Palace Malice (Curlin) by a neck
in the 2013 GI Toyota Blue Grass S. over the then-synthetic
surface at Keeneland. Out of a full-sister to champion grass mare
Fiji (GB), he made his final racetrack appearance in a Woodbine
allowance for trainer Roger Attfield and retires with a record of
19-3-2-1 and earnings of $713,807.
"With his Grade I win on all-weather and a family renowned
for turf, Mr. Fipke felt Canada would be an ideal environment
and plans to support the horse, as well,@ said Sid Fernando, an
advisor to Fipke. AHis form, defeating a future Classic winner in
Palace Malice, was obviously significant, and he's priced to be
accessible to smaller breeders. He'll stand alongside Mr. Fipke's
Queen's Plate winner Not Bourbon, the leading first-crop sire in
Canada two years ago."
