CAMPAIGN FOR PEOPLE WITHINTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES

One of the most popular and successfulprograms conducted by local councilsbenefits people with intellectual disabilities

by collecting funds outside stores and on streetcorners. In appreciation, the donor is offered a pieceof candy, often a Tootsie Roll®. The high visibility ofthis program has led to the campaign being referredto as the “Tootsie Roll Drive.”

While the nickname is understandable, it ismisleading since the Knights of Columbus has noofficial tie to Tootsie Rolls or their manufacturer. Many councils participate in the same fundraisingdrive, but distribute other items. References to thisprogram should highlight the positive aspects of thefundraising and not advertise candy. If councils inyour district conduct this program, it is recommendedthat it be promoted as the “Campaign for People withIntellectual Disabilities.”

AN ACTIVITY-PACKED OCTOBER

Councils should begin planning for a busy October. Beginning with October 3 and continuingthrough October 11, 2015, councils should participate in the Orderwide Charitable ServiceOutreach Week. Suggested programs for that week include:

Conducting a Coats for Kids program Councils should order coats now for distribution•during the week in October by using the Coats for Kids Order Form (#5029) available onkofc.org/forms. Coats may also be ordered through knightsgear.com. Additionalinformation on the program is available on the Knights of Columbus website, kofc.org/coats.Conducting a Food for Families program Councils should begin announcing in their•parishes and communities that the collection dates will be during the service week inOctober. Once the program is complete, councils should report their participation in theprogram using the Food for Families Reimbursement Program Refund and PlaqueApplication (#10057) available on kofc.org/forms.

During the weekend of October 10-11, 2015, councils should participate in the Orderwide Church Drive. The councils in your district should begin preparing for the drive by meeting with the pastor[s] of theparish[es] they serve to ask permission to conduct a membership drive at all Masses that weekend. Fora successful drive, the council should:

Submit a bulletin announcement for the drive during the two weeks leading up to the•Church driveDuring the weekend of the drive, post teams of brother Knights at the entries of the Church•to hand out informational flyers on their council and Prospect Cards (#921A)

For complete information on how to conduct a successful church drive, consult the MembershipRecruitment and Retention Manual (#10237).

Following the Charitable Service Outreach Week and the Orderwide Church Drive, councils shouldwelcome new members into their councils during the Orderwide First Degree Week being held October12-18, 2015. This is a perfect way for councils to complete an activity-filled start of October.

KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS POSTER CONTEST

For the past two years, the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council has sponsored the “Keep Christ inChristmas” Poster Contest. This program allows children, ages 5-14, to engage their creative talentsand imaginations while understanding the true meaning of Christmas.

Over six thousand young people have participated in the opportunity to showcase their artistic skills whilelearning about the importance of why we celebrate Christmas. The Knights of Columbus Supreme Councilis again encouraging councils to take part in this program to get even more young people engaged inkeeping Christ in Christmas and not just participating in the commercial aspect of the holiday.
