(NC) Warmer weather means making the most of your backyard space. And dining is a simple way to extend your time outdoors. Whether it's enjoying everyday meals, hosting an intimate dinner party or welcoming larger groups for a barbecue, there are a few things to consider when purchasing patio-dining furniture.

Conversation setsThese are becoming increasingly popular to provide comfortable seating which repli-cates the living room. They provide a great space to sit back, put your feet up and enjoy a good book in the afternoon and provide the optimal area to linger long after a meal is done. For less formal gatherings, food stations can be set up, buffet style around

the perimeter of the set. This allows guest to easily move around and talk to different people while they make their plates of food. Look for a conversation set with matching side and coffee tables.

Dining setsWhen it's warm out, why not take your meal outside? Whether prepared indoors or on the grill, outdoor dining sets are great for enjoying any meal. You can bring indoor elegance outside with deco-rative table linens, candles and colourful tableware. Great for smaller, more inti-mate dinner parties as well, food can be plated or served family style allowing your guests to remain at the table and lose track of time as they eat.

FlexibilityIf you can't decide between an intimate dining set or a casual conversation set, or if you just want the best of both worlds but don't have the space, look for a conversation/dining combination. Lowe's offers the new Prescott dining set which includes a table, a sofa, two end chairs and two stools that can be used for seating or foot rests.

Whichever set you choose, you may also want to consider the ease of adding additional seating like matching chairs or benches for when you have a larger group. Stools are great as extra seating or end tables.

(NC) You don't have to spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on a land-scape architect to add major impact to your garden. Here are some simple – and afford-able – ways to pump up the wow factor.

Vines are very helpful – especially if the view of your backyard includes a chain link fence or the side of a shed or garage. Use colourful, fast-growing vines like Honey-suckle or Virginia Creeper. If you're beau-tifying a wall, you'll need a lattice, which you can buy in sheets at the hardware store.

Gardening advisors at Loblaw stores remind us that hanging baskets always look stunning on a porch or a veranda. Choose a bright basket like the popular PC Fortunia Star Lavender Hanging Basket and have fun mixing colours and shapes. It's an easy way to brighten up a deck, balcony or front porch.

Lighting adds so much to your garden. Aim a spotlight up the base of a tree into the branches for some real drama. Strings of white lights around bushes are a special touch – and you can even place them throughout topiary forms to emphasize the shapes.

HOW TO HAVE A DESIGNER GARDENwithout the designer prices

Honeysuckle or Virginia Creeper. If you're beau-

tifying a wall, you'll need a lattice, which

The sound and motion of water gently falling from a fountain brings serenity to your garden – and it can look fantastic. Place a water feature in the corner of your patio or right in the garden bed, as long as it's on a sturdy base.

Never underestimate the power of planters. Set them around the edge of your patio to separate the space from the yard or put them right in the garden. Fill them with

tall ornamental grass for added privacy as well as visual interest. For a designer touch, take a look when grocery shopping at the PC Deco Wall Hanging Planter.

Accessories are affordable and make a difference. Add some instant character by setting up an antique-style bench padded with comfy cushions. Or hang a mesh hammock under some shady trees and drape it with a cozy fleece blanket.

Gluten-Free TREAT WITH LOADS OF FLAVOUR - BELIEVE IT!

Gluten-FreeCrackled Chocolate CookiesIngredients

• 2 oz (60 g) extra dark chocolate, chopped• 1/4 cup (50 ml) unsalted butter, cubed• 1 cup (250 ml) granulated sugar• 2 eggs• 1 tsp (5 ml) vanilla• 1 cup PC Gluten-Free All-Purpose Flour Blend• 1 tsp (5 ml) baking powder• 1/8 tsp (0.5 ml) salt• 1/2 cup (125 ml) semisweet chocolate chips• 1/4 cup (50 ml) granulated sugar

Directions

1. In heatproof bowl, melt chocolate with butter over (not in) saucepan of simmering (not boiling) water. Stir together and set aside to cool.

2. In large bowl, whisk together 1 cup (250 ml) sugar, the eggs and vanilla. Pour in cooled chocolate mixture and whisk until combined. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt; using wooden spoon, stir into chocolate mixture until combined. Stir in chocolate chips. Cover bowl with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 2 hours or until firm.

3. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.

4. Scoop dough into 1 tbsp (15 ml) amounts, roll into balls and coat in 1/4 cup (50 ml) sugar. Place 2 inches (5 cm) apart on prepared baking sheets. Makes about 25.

5. One sheet at a time, bake in centre of oven for 12 to 14 minutes. Cookies will be cracked on the surface but still slightly soft. Cool on sheets on rack. Store in airtight container at room temperature.

(NC) We've all heard the complaints: Gluten-free cakes taste like sand – and gluten-free cookies are brittle and bland. This type of diet does sound restrictive but there are plenty of ways to indulge in sweet treats without sacrificing flavor.

“This classic fudgy cookie crackles delightfully on top while it bakes,” says Tom Filippou, executive chef for President's Choice cooking schools. “We made them with our new gluten-free flour, so you can share them with everyone.”

(NC) This year, why not look beyond the standard gift ideas and find new ways to do something special with dad? On Father's Day, if he's the kind of guy to appreciate clever ideas for saving money and saving energy, give him one or more of these thoughtful gifts:

Throw the 'coolest' party Staying cool doesn't require a second fridge or freezer. Consider freezing water bottles to keep refreshments cool instead of using a fridge or freezer.

UnplugHow many times has dad asked you to turn off the TV or put down your phone? Turns out he was right. By shutting down and unplugging electronics such as TVs, PVRs, desktop computers and home phones you can save electricity, even if it's just for the day.

Let there be lightKeeping things bright doesn't have to be expensive. Take dad to the hardware store to buy energy efficient LED bulbs for outdoor lights. Consider investing in solar powered lanterns for the backyard to cut down on spotlight usage.

Hail the grill masterFather's Day is the perfect opportunity for dad to show off his grill skills. Cook more on the BBQ and less in the oven or microwave to reduce energy consumption and your electricity bill.

Out with the oldReplace dad's old electronics or tools with energy efficient and eco-friendly options. Consider going so far as ditching the elec-tric or gas powered mower for the classic manual version.

DIY with dadFill the day with DIY activities that can help cut down on energy costs and usage. Install a clothesline to avoid using the dryer and make a DIY in-the-ground fridge to naturally keep your drinks cool.

Hand dad the monkey wrenchLeaky faucets, broken seals on doors and inefficient heating and cooling systems stack up on your energy bill. Be dad's right-hand this Father's Day and get to work around the house.

Saving energy equals saving money. That's something you and dad can finally agree on!

Each May Canadians celebrate National Bike to Work Day, which inspires many people to drop their keys, dust off their bikes and start pedaling to the office. Brush up on some basic biking rules before joining in. “It’s really important to plan ahead. It increases your comfort and safety on your bike,” says Erin O’Melinn, executive director of HUB, a Canadian cycling organization. Keep these in mind as you plan:

Inspect your bike. The Canadian Automobile Association (CAA) recommends using your ABCs: Check the air pressure of your tires; make sure your brakes and bell work, and that your handlebar is a comfortable height; and test your chain and gears.

Pick a safe route. As you map out your commute, consider traffic volume, road condition, speed limit and the overall geography.

“Go online and take a look at your city’s bike maps,” O’Melinn says.

Dress appropriately. Seven out of the 10 Canadian provinces enforce helmet laws, but you should wear a helmet regardless. If you’re worried about ruining work clothes, pack an outfit and change at the office. Also prepare for the weather. Take rain gear, and dress in layers so you can shed clothing as you warm up. Also wear an ankle strap or tuck the cuffs of your pants into your socks to avoid getting caught in the gears or chain.

Make yourself visible. Install lights and reflectors on your bike — red for the back and white for the front. Refrain from wearing dark clothes that will make you difficult to see at night or in the early morning. Wear bright-colored, reflective clothing.

Be predictable. “Ride straight and use your signals,” O’Melinn says. Weaving in and out of traffic is dangerous, but if you have to switch lanes or make a turn, use appropriate hand signals.

Load smart. Heavy backpacks, purses or briefcases are a distraction and could throw off your balance, resulting in an accident. Install a rack, a basket, saddle bags or panniers on your bike. Waterproof versions are great for transporting work clothes and materials.

Stay alert. “Always be aware and never assume that other drivers can see you,” O’Melinn says. In addition to vehicles, watch for road hazards such as pot holes and slippery surfaces.

Know the laws. Obey basic traffic signals and laws, such as riding on the right side of the road with traffic. Bike laws differ province-to-province, so be sure to research the rules and regulations in your area.
