Floating Production Systems for Oil and Gas
in Harsh Environments

An overview of various floating production systems, consisting of a floater, positioning system, process plant, riser,
well head as well as safety subsystems, is given. Challenges in using mooring and dynamic positioning for station-keeping as well as using flexible versus rigid risers are discussed. The emphasis will be on integrated design of floater,
riser and positioning systems, considering relevant combinations of these subsystems. Design targets relating toserviceability and safety are outlined and conceptual design of typical floating systems and important issues relating to
performance of each concept are briefly described.
The particular challenges of designing offshore production systems for operations in an harsh ocean environment
including arctic conditions, is addressed. The role of theoretical analyses, laboratory experiments and in-serviceexperiences to develop the technology is briefly described.
Torgeir Moan has been Professor of Marine Structures in Norwegian University of Science &Technology (NTNU) since 1977. His main research interest is structural analysis and design of allkinds of marine structures. He has authored more than 350 scientific papers, and delivered more
than 20 keynote, plenary lectures in international conferences and award lectures. He has educatedmore than 40 PhD candidates and 350 MSc students. He has been a visiting Professor at MIT and
UC Berkeley. He has contributed in the development of various structural design standards for
offshore structures, ships and floating bridges in Norway and internationally and in design of novel
types of offshore structures. Most recently he was responsible for the most modern standard for
analysis of loads and load effects for offshore structures (NORSOK N-003) that will serve as basis for ISO standard forfloating platforms. He has also been engaged in accident inquiries, notably the Alexander Kielland accident. Since
1976 he has been involved in the International Ship and Offshore Structures Congress, as committee chairman and
standing committee member and chairman. He is editor of J. Marine Structures and serves on the editorial board of 7other journals. Moan has been elected member of academies of science and letters, such as the Royal Academy of
Engineering in UK, as well as elected Fellow of several international professional societies like ASCE and IABSE and
life member of ASME. He received the Statoil research prize in 1998 and Petroleum Safety Award in 2006. He
received the J. Rice Award from ASME in 2004 and the JSChung ISOPE Award in 2006. Professor Moan has beenDean of Faculty of Marine Technology, NTH (NTNU) and served as project manager in several research projects in
SINTEF. Since 2002 he has been director of the Centre of Excellence for Ships and Ocean Structures at NTNU. He was
appointed the first Keppel Professor in National University of Singapore in December 2002.
