This mother coyote approached our compost pile looking forfood as it is likely feeding young pups. This is a good reason notto put meat in your compost pile. Not finding any meat scraps,
she picked up a piece of rotting fruit, laid it in the grass androlled all over it. Canids of all kinds roll in foul smelling things,
and theories as to why they do this are abundant, with nobodyreally knowing why.

Nature Notes § Thursday marks the spring equinox and as we enter the
Quarantine Age, there is no better time to take a walk outside. Not only are you less likely to be exposed to the coronavirus,
but the unfolding details of spring in coming weeks will providea wonderful antidote to spending too much of your time
looking at a screen! § With rain predicted this week, animal tracks will abound, andthe moisture will prompt greening cool season grasses, maybe
some weird fruiting bodies of apple cedar rust on cedars, salamander runs and lots of singing western chorus frogs.
§ It’s time to check native woodlands for emerging woodlandwildflowers, including rue anemone, false rue anemone, cutleaftoothwort, and Dutchman's breeches. Gooseberry, buckbrush
and the invasive honeysuckle are all beginning to leaf out. § Some edible wild plants are emerging including stingingnettle, a very nutritious plant after being steamed. Found in
rich soils, it has stinging hairs that require you to wear gloveswhen harvesting, but steaming makes them lose their sting.
§ With cool weather, birds will still frequent a filled birdfeeder, but they are becoming more territorial. See if during
your walks you can see them staking out their nestingterritories.
