2016
With no street names, no stop signs, no Wendy’s or CVS to
mark the left-hand turn on a 20 mile journey on the water, how
do we get there? While traversing to our destination, the
skipper and crew have to pay close attention to oncoming
traffic, channel markers, and the weather, and must always be
on the lookout for flotsam! There really isn’t time to be
looking down at charts and figuring out what various symbols
mean. Plotting your course is done before the engine is started.
Our next two program meetings on July 21st and August 18th
will begin to unravel the mystery of how your Skippers find
that little tiny rock surrounded by water on all sides. My first
40 years of sailing, all I did was race from buoy to buoy, or sail
to destinations as far as the eye could see. I could read a chart,
but I couldn’t navigate at all. The more I learned about
navigating the waterways, the more new sailing opportunities
opened up to me.
“How to Plot a Course” will teach the traditional, ‘true-
variation-magnetic’ method (no compass deviation). You will
also learn parallel rules and ‘roller plotters’.
Attendees can purchase materials or bring their own. Materials
for sale include:
How to Read A Nautical Chart by Nigel Calder ($14)
Maptech Waterproof Chart Symbol Guide ($20)
Weekend Navigator, 2nd Edition ($25)
Dividers (Weem and Plath) ($12 each)
USPS Course Plotter ($7)
Miscellaneous other small textbooks.
Hope to see you there! Terry Cotterall-Lagana

Assigned to night watch one night on an
extended vacation sail in the Gulf of Maine,
you see a vessel with the light pattern shown
above approaching you. (a) What kind of
vessel is it? (b) Which of you is the ‘give way’
vessel? (c) What special caution should you
give the helm?
POP QUIZ
(a) A commercial fishing vessel engaged in fishing
(not trawling). Instead of a white masthead
light, this power-driven vessel is required to
display an all around red light above an all
around white light (“Red Over White, We’re
Fishing Tonight”). Since she’s making way, red
and green side marker lights must also be
displayed
(b) You’re the ‘give way’ vessel whether you’re
sailing, motor-sailing, or motoring and must stay
clear of the fishing vessel according to
Navigation Rules.
(c) The all-around white light on the port side of the
mast-mounted red and white lights indicates that
the vessel has outlying fishing gear extending
over 150 meters horizontally from her port side.
It would be prudent to pass her starboard to
starboard.
OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS!
