This session will provide a summary of how Louisiana compares to other states in convicting and freeing the innocent. Discussion includes historical and current causes of wrongful convictions (going beyond the problem of mistaken eyewitness identification) and the current post-conviction mechanism for finding and freeing the innocent. Also discussed are how lawyers and judges can ensure problem cases are remedied and successful bipartisan initiatives in other states to root out the innocent in prison.
