In the United Kingdom we have celebrated Black History Month every October since 1987.
Its aim is to encourage diversity and celebrate the cultural backgrounds and achievements of many amazing Black people in Britain and across the world.

Many people argue that Black History Month provides us with a focus to demonstrate pride in Black people’s creativity, respect for their intellectual, cultural, and sporting prowess and a celebration of its cultural identity, which is far too often understated or even ignored.

On the other hand, the actor Morgan Freeman has publicly questioned Black History Month, asking, "Why would you relegate my history to a single month?"

October is Black History MonthIn 1926, nearly a century ago, Carter Woodson - whose work started Black History Month - said that eventually it should not be necessary to have a special week or month dedicated to Black history.
We have come a long way as a society but it seems as if there is still more work to be done for everyone to celebrate Black people’s history, not just every October but all the time.
Perhaps until we celebrate the achievements of all races, we need to celebrate Black History Month.
