JCC Afterschool-Oakland Staff
Yani Pettway Director- JCC Afterschool Oakland, Driver
Hello All, my name is Yani. Some may have known me as the past Assistant Director of the
Oakland site or even from Camp Tzofim. I am happy to be the Director of the Oakland site for
the 2016-2017 school year. I love adventures around the bay area, any kind of hot sauce, and
trying a new dish. I graduated in 2015 from California State University, East Bay where I
received a B.A in Sociology along with Ethnic Studies. I love the community and I hope to bring
my passions into the Oakland JCC. I am very excited to be the director for this great program! I
love meeting new people, make sure to come and say hi!
Valerie Lowe Assistant Director, Driver
Hi! My name is Valerie and I'm the new Assistant Director of the Oakland Afterschool program. I
grew up in San Diego in a close knit Jewish community and moved to Berkeley for college. I just
graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.S. in Conservation and Marine Science. After working in
environmental education for a few years, I found I was not only passionate about teaching
science, but also about the behind the scenes work that makes enriching programming
possible. This is my first year working with the JCC, and I am excited to get to know your
students and families!
Brendan Tidd Head Teacher, Driver, Amazing Chef
Hello, My name is Brendan Tidd. Oakland has been my home base since the day I was born, 26
years ago. I have been a teacher at the Oakland JCC for over 4 years. When I'm not at the JCC, I
embark on many outdoor adventures. I am also a photographer with a focus on nature
landscapes, wildlife, and travel, as well as cityscapes and portraits. You can also find me riding
my bike or even roller blading around the East Bay. I am also a DJ and a huge music and record
collector. I love to cook, which is why I am the chef at the Oakland JCC. Some fun facts about
me: I love smoothies, I can wiggle my ears, I like to jump over things and do ninja tricks, my
favorite season is summer, my favorite Disney movie is The jungle Book, and I sometimes
babysit in the evenings and and on weekends. Lastly, I’d love to learn more about you!
Will Shattuc Teacher
My name is Will Shattuc and I’m Oakland born and raised. I do a lot of drawing, storytelling,
and Shakespeare in my free time. My mom grew up speaking Yiddish in the house and I have a
deep love for the stories and traditions of Galician Judaism. Also the Grateful Dead. I don't
drink Coffee.
Vivian Baker Teacher, Driver
My name is Vivian Baker. I was born here in the Bay, but I have lived in Washington State,
Connecticut, and Washington D.C. I worked as a litigation paralegal and as a marketing
coordinator before coming to the realization that I most enjoy teaching. I currently teach at
Manzanita Seed in the Mornings before my time at the JCC. In my spare time, I enjoy video
games, cooking (I collect fancy cook books), music (I play the celtic harp and have recently
taken up the ukulele), sports (volleyball is my favorite!) crossword puzzles and trivia questions.
Fun Fact: My favorite books are Peruasion, The Age of Innocence and the Forgotten Beasts of
Eld. I’ve enjoyed my time at the JCC thus far, and I'm looking forward to more!
Will Hauer Teacher, Driver
Hello! My name is William Hauer and I am 22 years old and currently studying at the Berkeley
City College. I am a Bay area transplant and have been here for a little over a year, but I was
born and raised in Bridgeport, Connecticut. In my free time I like to produce music, play guitar,
and create things! I think creating, to any extent is an important part of self exploration and
proves to be extremely beneficial.

the world by cooking….and eating! Moroccan couscous with fresh ginger, cloves, and orange
zest; Vietnamese wontons with water chestnuts, carrots and tofu; zucchini, carrot, onion latkes
with warm strawberry apple sauce from Israel, and much more. Yum! We present new
understanding about cultures and traditions around the world using food as the conduit to get
there. A typical class includes cooking, eating, an international folktale, language acquisition,
and a slide presentation about the country as a means for context. Cooking Around the World
supplies the aprons, food, cookware, and emails the recipes home at the end of the session.
The program is 100% hands on; all children peel, dice, chop, and mince. As we cook, we talk
