FRIDAY MINCHA TIMES

Dear Schomre Israel Family,
What would you do if you won the lottery? Our normal “religious” response is, of course, that we would donate money to Schomre Israel, pay off our debts, and make sure that ourfamily’s future is assured. What most often happens though, with winners of the lottery, isthat they very quickly squander their money and go into greater debt than they were in be-fore. The sudden gift is sometimes difficult to use properly.
This calendar year we have a double gift, one in the Jewish year and the other in the secular. This year theJewish calendar has two months of Adar, which are inserted to assure that Passover does not come in thedepths of winter but remains the spring holiday. The secular calendar February will also be a leap month, containing 29 days - one extra day in the secular calendar and a whole extra month in the Jewish calendar. So what do we do with them? Do you remember how overjoyed you were as a young child when you gotthe double yolk in the egg? We can smile, eat the omelet, feel special for a few moments, and then havethings go on as normal, or we can perhaps think for a moment that we received a special gift, an extra egg,an extra day or a whole extra month.
Mitch Albon, among his insightful books, wrote “For One More Day”, addressing the question of what onecould do if they had the time and the ability for the do-overs of life. The story asks the question, but the cal-endar gives us the opportunity. Seize the day, take the opportunity of this extra time to read a good book(may I suggest the Torah), contact a friend that you haven't spoken to in many years, write or call that rela-tive to whom you haven't spoken since the argument years ago, say thank you to someone you take forgranted, and do a random act of kindness.
At a recent convocation in New York, honor was given to Chiune Sugihara, the famed Japanese envoywho issued lifesaving transit visas to Jews in Kaunus, Lithuania, during World War II. At the end of the pro-gram the chairperson called for those who had received a visa to please stand. They then asked for thedescendants of those people to rise. While only about 10 stood for the first call, there were well over 100for the second. It may not be as heroic, but one smile, one good word can be transformative and multipliedexponentially.
A warm winter to all.

Opportunity to Help Feed the Hungry
Our synagogue is involved in two projects to help address the social problems in our local Poughkeep-sie/Dutchess County community. As an integral part of the recently formed Jewish Social Action Coali-tion, we have been providing breakfast food of bananas and cereal to the local homeless shelter on aonce a month basis. Now we have a chance to join in a more ambitious project called RescuingLeftover Cuisine.
The goal of Rescuing Leftover Cuisine (RLC) is to bring uneaten food from stores, farms, wholesalersand other food producers to shelters, soup kitchens and food pantries. Essentially, food that wouldhave been wasted is redirected to help feed the hungry. RLC is entirely volunteer based, so all food istransported by volunteers. As a non-profit food rescue organization, its purpose is to make food rescueefforts easily replicated and easily integrated as a small part of the volunteers' schedule. RLC is a 501(c)3 organization that has branches in a number of other locations across the nation. So how can wehelp? We have identified a number of food recipients in the Poughkeepsie area including soup kitch-ens, food pantries, homeless shelters and group homes. We need to identify more food donors and tomake ourselves available for transporting food from donors to food banks.
Food donors can include farms, wholesalers/food manufacturers, caterers, hospitals, hotel/motelbuffets, restaurants, etc. Food donors can make donations on a scheduled basis or on an occasionalbasis.
If you are interested in helping with this worthwhile project, please contact Sandy Corwin,845.452.2436, or [email protected].
