News from Social Service
January is National Blood Donor Month
Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather, and illness. January, in particular, is a difficultmonth for blood centers to collect blood donations. A reduction in turnout can putour nation’s blood inventory at a critical low.
January has been designated as National Blood Donor Month. With this in mind, the SocialService Department would like to encourage donors to give or pledge to give blood.
You don't need a special reason to give blood. You just need your own reason. Someof us give blood because we were asked by a friend. Some know that a familymember or a friend might need blood someday. Some believe it is the right thing todo. Whatever your reason, the need is constant and your donation is important formaintaining a healthy and reliable blood supply. You'll feel good knowing you've helpedchange a life!
For a list of donation centers and additional information please contact LaTanya Steele at 781-455-7555 ext. 208.
February is Black History Month
Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annualcelebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing thecentral role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “NegroHistory Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and otherprominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officiallydesignated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries aroundthe world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month toOrigins of Black History Month.
The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the ThirteenthAmendment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorlandfounded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), anorganization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by blackAmericans and other peoples of African descent. Known today as the Associationfor the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the group sponsoreda national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February tocoincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The eventinspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs and host performances and lectures.
