ISTANBULLS MAGAZINE
Welcome
Welcome to the first issue of Istanbulls Magazine!
Istanbulls SC has been established in 2009 with
only one team and following season under the
sponsorship of Turkish Airlines and Pınar,
Istanbulls has started competing with five teams in
different levels; from veterans to youth. As a result
of our desire to communicate better with our
players, families and football lovers in UAE, we
are pleased to launch our monthly magazine.
Erol Muzaffer, Özhan Özden and Burhan
Ünalan have come up with the idea and I am
honoured to help Istanbulls to spread our news
and messages. In the first issue. A big thanks to
Ali Rıza Dikici; without him it wouldn’t be possible
you to read this.
This is our introduction issue, in which we have an
interview with Erol Muzaffer about the launch of
Istanbulls, presenting general information about
our teams, providing some football terms we use
on or off the pitch, latest results and current
standings.
We are also pleased to announce Istanbulls
Family BBQ party on 11th of February. All teams
will be there with families, kids and parents. A
perfect chance to gather together and socialise,
join us to share the fun!
Upcoming months, you will see things changing in
the magazine and getting better. Please do not
hesitate to share your thoughts and highly
valuable feedback.
Keep playing football!
Orkun Özbatur
Founding Istanbulls SC
Can you please explain us how it all
begun; how was Istanbulls established?
Between years 2006 and 2008 I played
football at Dubai Amateur Football League
(DAFL) with various teams.
During this time, I have played with Russian,
English, Arabian, Dutch, French, Romanian
and Persian teams and enjoyed playing as a
player pretty much.
At the end of 2008 I had a serious injury and
had to have a break for 1 year. At the end of
this inevitable break, I came up with an idea.
In UAE there are around 8000 Turk living
and unfortunately we have not had a single
Turkish team competing at the DAFL.
So I have thought, “Why don’t we have a
team?”, and decided to form a sports
team in which football would be the
primary sports.
As a result, I have started to discuss this
project with PINAR. By the courtesy of
their support I was able to form Istanbulls
SC. My primary objective was to create
a cooperation and socialisation between
Turks as well as giving the opportunity to
play sports.
What is the importance of Istanbulls
in Turkish community in Dubai/UAE?
Today Istanbulls have 5 football teams.
Two children’s teams; Under 9 & Under
11; two adult’s team and 1 veteran’s
team. Thus, we are providing opportunity
to play football for everyone willing to,
between the ages 6 and 55.
Today we have around 80 players and in
addition to this we have around 300
people who we are in a social interaction
with. Since we think this is only a start,
we believe this number will grow
exponentially.
Prestigious companies like Turkish
Airlines and Pınar which believe in and
support us are enabling us to see a
bright future for the teams.

Founding Istanbulls SC
What do you expect from Istanbulls in
the future; what will be the next
steps?
Our mission as Istanbulls SC “Constant
Upturn & Progress”. In order to fulfil this
mission, every year, we would like to add
some more quality to our teams.
For the next year, primarily, we would like
to make our club more institutional. In
addition to this, we want to grow into
other sports fields. We have already
started our studies about making
Istanbulls SC a real multi-field sports
club.
You might see a much different Istanbulls
in front of you next year.
Istanbulls SC management stuff while signing sponsorship contract with THY
Why have you had a need of
increasing the number of teams in
second year?
At the year of foundation of our sports
club, we had only 1 adult team. But this
year we have 5 separate team competing
in various leagues. Prior to season start
we have realised that there is no problem
with increasing the number of teams in
our club.
Since we have enough human force, the
important issue is not the number of
teams, but the success and the quality of
the teams. So, I would like to keep the
number of teams in 5 and make the best
out of them.

Common Football Terms
As every single profession has its own
jargon, football creates its language from
action and movement terms; mostly using
metaphors.
In the first issue of Istanbulls Magazine we
would like to provide some common football
terms to help audience and parents get
better understanding of the game.
Charging – a method of running at and
unbalancing the player who has possession,
or is attempting to gain possession of ball.
Clearing – the act of moving the ball out of
the area of one’s own goal.
Fake (feint) – a move by a player meant to
deceive an opposing player. Used to gain an
advantage, it is frequently used when
dribbling to get past an opponent.
Screening (Shielding) – used by the person
with the ball to protect the ball from a
defender; the ball carrier keeps their body
between the ball and the defender.
Slide Tackle – a move where a player
attempts to win the ball by sliding towards
the ball.
Trap – the use of one’s body to slow down
and control a moving ball, most often using
the chest, thighs or feet.
First Touch (one touch pass) – when the
ball is received and propelled in a single
movement.
Banana Kick – a kick that curves such
that it takes the shape of a banana. This
is usually attempted on a corner kick to
curve the ball from the corner directly into
the goal.
Bicycle Kick (Scissors Kick) – when a
player kicks the ball in mid-air backwards
and over their own head, usually making
contact above waist level. Not too
frequent at the youth level!
Cut Back – dribbling the ball backwards
in the reverse way of the goal in an
attempt to keep possession of the ball.
Narrowing the Angle – when the goalie
comes out of the goal to make himself
closer and larger to an attacker.
Hospital Ball – a dangerous pass from
one teammate to another, resulting in a
pass that becomes a 50/50 ball instead
of one that is easily received.
"Man On" – the call a player makes to a
teammate who is closely marked by an
opposing player but may not be aware of
it.
"Pull Up" (push up) – a phrase used to
tell the defence to move up the field in a
more attacking position. Sometimes used
as the command for an offside trap.
Two Touch Pass (one-two play) – a
pass in which the ball is received by a
player with one touch and then played to
a teammate with the next touch.

Our First Season
I hope everybody enjoyed our first
season : I believe it was a very
promising start to their football
career :) We played 11 games; we
won 5, lost 6 and picked up 15
points, finished the league in 7th
place. Our form was the league
WWLWLLWWLLL.
All season 11 different players took
part and we averaged 8.7 players
on the pitch per game. Aslan Cem,
Yalcin, Yigit, Kerem, Berk and
Murat attended all games. We
scored 31 goals, our top goal scorer
is Murat with 15 goals and the
runner up is Artun with 11 goals.
Man of the match table is quite tight:
Murat deserved this postion 5 times
and Artun managed it in 3 games.
We didn't have any goalkeepers for the beginning of the season but Berk stepped up for this post and he
played very well, he finished 3 games without conceding any goals. Kerem is our joker, he played in every
position with high standard and passion, his performance was also outstanding. Aslan Cem always played
with a positive attitude and did his best. Yigit also played in defence and midfield areas whenever we
needed him. Bartu always played with passion and style, he never gave up and he is getting bigger and
stronger. Yalcin and Derin improved a lot, whenever the team needed them, they were always ready. Murat
is our top goal scorer, he battled most of his time and he did a fantastic job for the team. Artun is also great
striker and he scored many goals and created lots of chances.
Please don't forget Bartu and Aslan Cem are actually U7's team members and they challenged the older
and physically bigger players, extremly well.
Well done boys! You did great in your first year. I strongly believe this team deserved a better position in
the league. This team has potential to play quality and good team football. If you look at the beginning of
the season and now you can see a big difference. All of them improved a lot but we still need to work on
team play and helping each other.
All in all, even though our results weren't great, our style of play was good and we should look to build upon
that next year. Winning and losing are just things that are certain to happen in football but as long as
everyone has fun and does their best, its all we can ask for.
Match Results & Standings
Veteran team enjoyed their first season : We believe it was a very promising start to
their second career :) They played 8 games; won 3, lost 4 and drew 1 and picked up
10 points, finished the league in 5th place out of 10 teams. Their form was the league
DWLWLLWL.
All season 19 different players took part and we averaged 8.1 players on the pitch per
game. Ozhan attended all games and Craig was the runner up with 5 games. We
scored 21 goals (3 of them from our win by default). Our top goal scorer is Howard
with 6 goals and the runner up is Craig with 5 goals. Man of the match table is quite
tight : Howard, Craig and Pete sharing this position with 2 games.
We are sure if they had started the season with goalkeeper Ala the result would have
been different. Howard and Arend's injuries of course affected their place in the table;
we hope they will be back to the squad soon.
Veterans team started to play for fun and do some exercises, we think they doing
very well, enjoying themselves and great workout every Tuesday evening. They are
inspiring all young players, keep going on Vets!
