The contractor shall be deemed to have satisfied himself beforetendering as to the correctness and sufficiency of his tender for the worksand of the rates and prices stated in the priced Bills of Quantities whichrates and prices shall cover all his obligations under the contract and allmatters and things necessary for the proper execution, completion andmaintenance of the works.

The contractor shall insure as required by clause 30 of the conditions ofcontract in Tender document "A".
payment on account for the work executed will be made to theitractor until he has satisfied the Project Manager either by production of anurance Policy or an insurance certificate that the provisions of theurance Clauses have been complied with in all respect and payment formiums made as necessary.
The Contractor will be required to furnish a Bond from approved and wellreputed Bank in a sum equal to 10% of the Contract sum, using the standardform of Bond provided.
Alternatively the Project Manager may at his discretion, accept a securitydeposit in cash in lieu of the Bond. The deposit is to be of the same amountas the Bond.
The Contractor shall not be allowed to commence the works,until he has submitted the performance Bond to the Project Manager duly signed,sealed and stamped from an approved Bank.

The Contractor's attention is drawn to the Legal Notice in the Finance Actwhich requires Payment of VAT on all contracts. The Contractor should thereforeinclude an allowance in his rates and prices for VAT and any other Governmenttaxes and levies currently in force.
The tender is advised that in accordance with Government regulationswithholding Taxes of income and VAT will be levied against the total contract sum bythe Employer and remitted to the Commissioner of Domestic Taxes; through all interimand final certificates. It should be noted that this is not an additional Tax; but it isan advance payment of Tax which will be refundable once the Contractor hassubmitted annual returns to the Kenya Revenue Authority who will do the refundswhen satisfied that all the income tax regulations have been compiled with.

B WORKING HOURS

No work shall be carriednight or on gazetted holidays unless the Project Manager shall direct. Allow for providing all scaffolding, plant, tools and vehicles required for theproper execution of the works except for such items specifically and onlyrequired for the use of nominated sub-contractors as described herein. Notimber used for scaffolding, formwork or temporary works of any kind shallbe used afterwards in the permanent work.
D ICONTRACTOR'S SUPERINTENDENCE/SITE AGENT.
The Contractor shall constantly keep on the works a literate English speakingAgent or Representative competent and experienced in the kind of workinvolved, who shall give his whole time to the superintendence of the works.Such Agent or Representative shall receive on behalf of the Contractor alldirections and instructions from the Project Manager and such directions andinstructions shall be deemed to have been given to the Contractor inaccordance with the conditions of contract.
A. TYPES OF PIPE
The Contractor shall construct the pipeline using the designs of pipe, bed,haunch and surround detailed on the Drawings.
Where the Contractor wishes to use a type of pipe not manufactured in theminimum internal diameter indicated in the Contract, he may substitute the nextlarger diameter manufactured, subject to compliance with the designrequirements,- clearance and -cover. The Contractor- shall not use-pipes -andfittings supplied by more than one manufacturer without approval.
B. SETTING OUT
The Contractor shall set out the underground services to the lines shown on theDrawings. Where the service is required laid to fails these shall be set by meansof proper sight rails and boning rods.
Sight rails shall be of the following minimum standard. They shall be adjustablesight rails of 150mm x 30mm wrought softwood of length im painted black andWhite as directed secured to strong uprights embedded in the ground atdistances not exceeding 60 metres.
Care shall be taken to ensure that these sight rails are not obscured by spoilfrom the excavation.
C. EXCAVATION
The Contractor shall carry out the excavation in accordance with the Drawingsand shall comply with the slopes, levels, depths and heights shown thereon.
Unless otherwise directed top soil shall be striped, laid aside and kept separatefrom other excavated materials for reuse. Road bottoming and surfacingmaterial which is approved as suitable for re-use shall be laid aside and keptseparate from other excavated materials.
Where shown in the Contract or directed top soil shall be striped over the fullwidth of the working area before any other operation is carried out and soildeposited in dumps. On completion of the other operations the soil shall beevenly spread over the stripped surface. -

The sides of all channels in every manhole shall be brought up vertically to aheight of not less than the diameter of the drain and shall be benched in goodconcrete from the top of the channels at an angle of 30° to the horizontal andfloated to a smooth hard surface with a coat of 1:1 cement mortar.
In all other respects, manholes shall be constructed in accordance with B.S Codeof Practice 301.
B. RECTANGULAR AND SQUARE MANHOLES
Rectangular and square straight through manholes shall be constructed fromsolid block work, stone work or concrete to comply with the following minimuminternal dimensions (millimetres).

When branches are connected into manholes the internal diameter of thechamber shall be increased as necessary, up to a maximum chamberdiameter 1830 mm.

B. STEP IRONS AND COVERS
Access shaft to manholes of depths greater than 760mm shall be provided withapproved step irons at suitable intervals.
Every manhole or manhole access shaft shall be fitted with a removable air-tightcast iron cover to adequate size and strength, fixed in a manner which preventssurface water gaining access into the drainage system.
Cast manhole covers and frames shall be manufactured in accordance with therequirements of B.S 497 and shall generally fall into the following categories:
Heavy duty : 1 For Carriage waysMedium Duty : For Footpaths
Light Duty : For domestic premises or otherplaces where they do nothave to carry wheeled traffic.
A. BACK DROP CONNECTIONS
Where the level of the branch drain entering the manhole is higher than can besuitably accommodated by the normal type benching, then the branch drain shallbe connected to the manhole by means of a back drop connection.
Back drop connections shall be made in accordance with the details shown onthe relevant Sub-Contract Drawings and the requirements of B.0 Code ofPractice 301.
B. CHANNELS
Where the branch channel connects to the main channel in the manhole, theinvert of the branch channel shall be a minimum of 38mm higher than the mainchannel.

During the test, each branch and joint shall be examined carefully for leaks andany defects revealed shall be made good by the Sub-Contractor and the sectionre-tested.
The Sub-Contractor shall take all necessary precautions to prevent damageoccurring to special valves and fittings during the tests. Any items damaged shallbe repaired or replaced at the Sub-Contractor's expenses.
A. UNDER GROUND DRAINAGE SYSTEM
A site test shall be carried out on all drainage pipes before concrete haunching orsurrounds are applied. These tests shall be carried out preferably from manholeto manhole.
Short branch drains connected to a main drain between manholes shall be testedas one system with the main drain. In long branches, a testing junction shall beinserted next to the junction with the main drain and the branch testedseparately. After the test has been passed, the testing junction shall beeffectively sealed.
All tests on underground drains shall be permitted on cast iron drains at thediscretion and to the approval of the Engineer.
Water tests shall be carried out in accordance with the methods described underB.S Code of Practice 301. Clause 601(b) and (c) and the test pressure shall notbe less than 1,520mm head at the highest point in the pipe section and not morethan 10.360mm head at any point in the section.
The test pressure shall be maintained for a period of one hour during which timethe pipe and joints shall be inspected for sweating and leakage. Any leakdiscovered during the tests shall be made good by the Sub-Contractor and thesection re-tested.
In addition to pressure tests, drain pipe runs shall also be tested for straightnesswhere applicable. This test shall be carried out in accordance with one of thetwo methods described in B.S Code of Practice 301. Clause 601 (e).
Testing of manholes shall be carried out in accordance with the methodsdescribed under B.S Code of Practice 301. Clause 601 f).

A. ABOVE GROUND SOIL WASTE AND VENTILATION PIPE SYSTEM
All soil, waste and ventilating pipe system forming part of the above groundinstallation, shall be given a smoke test to a pressure of 38mm of water gaugeand this pressure shall remain constant for a period of not less than threeminutes.
Water tests on above ground soil, waste and ventilating pipe systems shall notbe permitted.
Pressure tests shall be carried out before any work which is to be concealed isfinally enclosed.
Any defects revealed by the tests shall be made good by the Sub-Contractor andthe test repeated to the approval of the Engineer.
In all other aspects, tests shall comply with the requirement of B.S 5572
SITE TEST - PERFORMANCE
B. GENERALLY
Following satisfactory pressure tests on the pipe work systems, operational testsshall be carried out in accordance with the relevant B.S Code of Practice on thesystems as a whole to establish that special valves, gauges, controls, fittings,equipment and plant are functioning correctly to the satisfaction of the Engineer.
All hot water pipe work shall be insulated with preformed fibre glass sectionallagging to a thickness of 25mm.
Cold water pipe work shall be installed with preformed fibre glass lagging to athickness of 25mm where the pipe runs above a false ceiling or in areas wherethe ambient temperature is higher than normal with the result that pipe"sweating", due to condensation will cause nuisance.
All lagged pipes which run in a visible position after erection shall be given acanvas cover and prepared for painting as follows:
(i) Apply a coating of a suitable filler until the canvas weave disappears andallow to dry.

(ii) Apply two undercoats of an approved paint and finish in suitable glossenamel to colours approved by the Engineer.
All laggings for cold and hot water pipes erected crawl ways, ducts and abovefalse ceiling which, after erection are not visible from the corridors or rooms,shall be covered with a reinforced aluminium foil finish and banded in colours tobe approved by the Engineer.
In all respects, unless otherwise stated, the hot and cold water installation shallbe carried out in accordance with the best methods of modern practice asdescribed in C.P 342 and C.P 310 respectively, to the approval of the Engineer.
The test pressure shall be applied by means of a manually operated test pumpor, in the case of long main or mains or larger diameter, by a power driven testpump which shall not be left unattended. In either case precautions shall betaken to ensure that the required pressure is not exceeded. Pressure gaugesshould be recalibrated before the tests.
The Sub-Contractor shall be deemed to have included in his price for all testpumps, and other equipment required under this Clause of the Specification.
The test pressure shall be one and a half times the maximum working pressureexcept where a pipe is manufactured from a material for which the relevant B.SSpecification designates a maximum test pressure as in the case of cast or spuniron pipes, where the test pressures should not exceed 120, 180 and 240metres/head of Clause B, C, or D pipes.
A. STERILIZATION OF HOT AND COLD WATER SYSTEMS
All under ground water mains and above ground water distribution systems,cisterns, tanks, calorifiers, pumps etc shall be thoroughly sterilized and flushedout after the completion of all tests and before being fully commissioned forhand over.
The sterilization procedures shall be carried out by the Sub-Contractor orspecialist employed by the Sub-Contractor in accordance with the requirementsof B.S Code of Practice 310. Clause 409, to the approval of the Engineer.

ELECTRICAL MATERIALS AND WORKS
A. REGULATIONS
This specification covers the requirements of lighting and power installations inKenya.
All apparatus and materials supplied for and all work carried out shall complywith Kenya Government Electrical Specifications, GES 1 and 2 local statutoryRegulations and the Supply Authority Bye Laws.
Installations should also be in accordance with the requirements of theEdition of the "Regulations of the Electrical Equipment of Buildings" issued by theInstitute of Electrical Engineers of Great Britain, which should be used as a "Codeof Practice", except where they conflict with Kenya Government Legislationregarding electrical installations and local amendments.
B. STANDARDS
Except where otherwise indicated in this specification, the Contract works and allmanufactures items shall comply with the relevant specifications of the BritishStandards Institution. Such specifications are hereinafter referred to as B.S. Ineach case, the latest editions of such specifications shall apply.
Should it be desired to offer equipment covered by other National orinternational standards, the approval of the Engineer must be obtained in writingbefore completion of the tender documents.
C. RECORD DRAWINGS
The sub-contractor shall mark accurately on one set of drawings the conduit laidduring the progress of the work. This information must be made available onsite for inspection by Engineer.
At the completion of the Contract. The contractor shall supply the Engineer withone set of transparent originals and two complete sets of prints showing thecomplete installation. The drawings shall included the location of all apparatusconduits and cable routes, and a schematic diagram of mains distributionindicating the phasing of the system.

A. CONTRACT DRAWINGS
These drawings forming part of this specification are to be read in conjunctionwith this specification to enable the Contractor to prepare a tender.
These drawings are not intended to be used as working drawings unless they arereleased for that purpose.
Circular or square boxes shall be provided at all outlet points, unless otherwisespecified and lighting fittings, ceiling switched and other accessories will bescrewed to the internal lugs of the boxes. Care must always be taken whenconsidering the use of totally enclosed fitting with polyvinyl chloride circularboxes where the temperature within the box is likely to rise above 60 C(140 F)special-steel insert clip should be used in conjunction with circular boxes wherethis problem can arise and also in situations where heavy pendants are used.
Looping in boxes of circular polyvinyl chloride pattern to sheet 63 B.S. 4607 part2 may be used in such work as dictated by the structure of the buildings.Conduit entry shall be made by means polyvinyl chloride socket adaptors andpolyvinyl chloride bushes.
Adaptable boxes shall be of moulded of fabricated polyvinyl chloride of square oroblong long shape complete with polyvinyl chloride lids secured by 2 BA brass orsteel plated round headed screws. All adaptable boxes and lids for the same sizeshall be interchangeable. No adaptable box smaller than 75mmx5Omm or largerthan 300mm x 300mm shall be employed. Boxes shall be of adequate depth inrelations to the size of the conduit entering them.
Conduits shall be terminated at adaptable boxes, fuse boards, switches, socketsor other equipment not possessing push-in or threaded spouts; by means ofappropriate size female adaptor and polyvinyl chloride Hexagonal headed BareBush. All cemented joints to be made to a depth of not less than the diameter ofthe conduit being used.
Earth continuity shall be provided by a separate insulated conductor drawn intothe plastic conduit and related in accordance with circuit loadings andappropriate regulations, or as mentioned on the drawings.
Where required under the regulations, an earth continuity conductor shall beprovided for lighting fittings in which case the control switches shall be equippedwith an appropriate earth terminal.

A. ARRANGEMENT OF CONDUIT LAYOUT
The conduit system shall be carefully planned and erected to avoid allunnecessary bends or changes in directions. Conduits shall be laid in straighthorizontal or vertical lines with easy sets. Where several conduits follow similarroutes, they shall be neatly grouped in multiple runs. Where multiple runschange direction, the radii of the sets shall be laid out from a common centre.Where draw-in boxes for right angled change of direction are required in multipleruns, adaptable boxes shall be used for such sizes as to allow all conduits toenter the box without sets.
The cables shall be coloured in accordance with Table B4 of Institute of ElectricalEngineer Regulations. Cables used on extra low voltage circuits shall havedistinctive colours other than these colours.
No reduction of the strands forming the conductors shall be allowed at switch orother terminals, but all strands shall be effectively secured by screws, nuts andwashers or other approved means.
CEILING
B. TYPE
Ceiling roses, ivory or white, shall be of the 3-plate pattern and fitted at allpendant points. An earthing terminal shall be provided and connected to theearth continuity conductor of the final sub-circuit where applicable.
Ceiling roses of the white porcelain semi-recessed pattern shall be used forsurface installation, and shall be of the all-insulated type for a flush installation.
LAM PHOLDERS
C. TYPE
Lamp holders shall generally be of plastic construction with porcelain interiors,and bayonet fitting.
Lamp holders for lamps rated 200 watts and above shall be of Edison Screwtype.
Batten type lamp holders shall be of the all-insulated bayonet type.

LIGHTING FITTINGS
A. GENERAL
The Contractor shall supply and fit all lighting fittings of the type indicated on thedrawings and in the schedules. All fittings shall be suitable for operation on a240 V. 50 cycles supply. Lighting fittings rated other than 240 volts will not besupplied with lamps.
B. FLUORESCENT FITTINGS
Fluorescent fittings shall generally be of the batten type, with control gearcontained within the supporting channel. All fittings shall be supported formconduits boxes, and shall be suspended by two 20mm conduits to give aclearance of 25mm between the top the fitting and the ceiling. In the ceiling,the conduit boxes, to B.S. 31, shall be fitted with dome covers, to which thesuspension conduit shall be joined, so that the lighting fitting hangs verticallybelow the conduit boxes. Fittings shall comply with B.S. 3820 or class 1, indoornormal atmosphere.
All fluorescent fittings shall be fitted with radio interference suppressioncapacitors and power factor correction capacitors and shall be earthed.
C. LAMPS
All fittings shall be supplied complete with lamps of the type and rating specified.Fluorescent tubes shall be of the "White" type, except where otherwise stated.Pearly type tungsten lamps shall be fitted in open fittings.

ELECTRICAL MATERIALS AND WORKS (CONT'D)
A. EARTHING
Earth electrodes shall be minimum 2 metres long by 15mm diameter hard drawncopper rod, and shall be located not less than 3 metres apart at a convenientposition 6 metres away from the building. The terminal head of each electrodeshall be in a concrete inspection pit, with cover. If the resistance to earth is notsatisfactory with the electrode, then additional electrodes or an earth mat shallbe provided, as directed by the Engineer.
B. DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM EARTHING
All distribution boards shall be earthed in accordance with the institute ofElectrical Engineer regulations. All metal work associated with the installationshall be earthed to comply with the regulations currently in force.
C. TESTING OF EARTHNG SYSTEM
The resistance of continuity system, when measured between the main earthingpoint and any other point in the installation, including all conduit and other metalwork which may provide a path or earth, shall not exceed 0.5 ohm where steelconduit forms part or the whole of the systems, or 1.0 ohm, if the earthcontinuity system is composed entirely of copper, copper alloy aluminium.
When the installation is complete, the sub-contractor shall carry out tests forearth loop impendence, polarity, insulation resistance, in the presence of, and tothe satisfaction of the Engineer and the Kenya Power & Lighting Company. TheContractor shall rectify all work not giving test results within the limitsprescribed.
Four copies of all test results shall be forwarded to the Engineer and a Certificateof completion will not be issued until such tests have been approved.
