All-LT Etiquette Dinner

Students from the current learning teams of
the Graduate Program in Sport Management came
together for an All-LT Etiquette Dinner on Nov.
21st in The Pointe at the Walter Pyramid.
Greg Clefisch, Manager of College Recruiting at
Southern Wine and Spirits, was the guest speaker
and presented on proper etiquette for business
dining. Students were encouraged to use their best
etiquette while at their tables with special invited
guests as they were served a three course meal.
In his presentation, Mr. Clefisch discussed
exactly what is business etiquette, how to conduct
yourself pre-meal, during the meal and once the
meal is complete. He also covered what to order,
inappropriate table conversation and whether or
not to order alcohol while at a business meal.
Some of the guests in attendance included the
Assistant Dean of Students, Dr. Jeane Caveness,
GPSM Advisory Committee members Bill Shumard
and Dedan Brozino along with instructors Andy
Roundtree, Rich Foster, Charles Harris, and Roger
Harvey. The list also included guests from outside
the industry such as Randy & Linda Haas of North
American Steel Alliance, Carl Morandell of Moran-
dell Imports, and Eric Lenahan of State Farm.
Students very were pleased on how beneficial
the dinner was, especially in their professional
development.
Nicole Peterson of LT 25, noted “One key takea-
way that I learned from the dinner was that eti-
quette is key when ‘dining for a job’ and little
things are noticed and interpreted.”
Along with learning the rules of etiquette, the
students were able to network among their peers
and invited guests throughout the night.

Tori Willis ( LT 18) was featured in the College of Continuing and Professional Education (CCPE) Annual Report 2012-2013. She was quoted as saying “ I highly recommend this program ( Sport Management) to self-starters and highly motivated students who are looking to blaze their own trail.”

International Softball Championships .
From November 20-24, Mariana Patraca (LT 24) and Ruby Rojas (LT 5)
traveled to Monterrey, Mexico as members of “Ruthless”, a softball team of
former international Olympians representing the USA. The team was formed
by three-time Olympic Medalist Crystal Bustos. Rojas played left-field while
Patraca played pitcher. It was a friendly tournament comprised of Ruthless,
the Cuban national team, the Mexican national team and the Mexican Junior
team. Ruthless won the tournament going undefeated at 5-0 and beating
Cuba in the championship game, 2-1. Rojas, an alumna of the program and
veteran member of the Venezuelan National Softball team, is currently the
Women’s head softball coach at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, CA. She
was recently honored as the 2013 Southern California Coach of the Year by
the California Community College Athletic Association. Patraca, a current
student in LT 24 and member of the Mexican national softball team, currently
works with MLB Urban Youth Academy in Community Relations and as a
softball instructor. Congrats on the championship ladies!
Happy Holidays from your GPSM family!
The Graduate Program in Sport Management is excited to send students
to Sendai, Japan for a two-week study abroad program in 2014! Classes
will be taught at Sendai University, which is the only Sports Science and
Physical Education University in Northern Japan. Professor Marty Kuehnert,
the first foreign General Manager of a Pro baseball team, will be the
instructor during the program. This will be the second year GPSM has sent
students overseas. A total of six members from LT 23 and LT24 attended
the program last July. Students had the opportunity to attend professional
soccer and baseball games, a bus-tour of Tokyo, and enjoy Japanese food
and culture. Abbey McNamara of LT 23 said, “I saw this opportunity as a
once in a lifetime chance to go to a country whose culture is very different
than ours and learn about sports while also meeting new people!” All of
those who attended last year’s trip had a great time and we are thrilled to
present this as an opportunity to our students once again!
