As Pacific Science Center moves into its
sixth decade—having served more than 42
million visitors—we are pleased to share the
exciting programs that are taking place on
our campus and across the state of
Washington. As a recognized leader
in both informal and formal STEM
education, we are actively planning
for our next half century of vibrant
service to the Puget Sound region
and every county in Washington.
In 2011, we launched our Future
Ready fundraising campaign.
Thanks to extraordinary community support,
we raised nearly $40 million to refresh the
institution. The building improvements
and program enhancements made possible
through the campaign include a permanent
health and wellness exhibition, sustainability
enhancements to our special exhibition hall,
and a state of the art theater renovation. These
physical assets complement and enhance
our many high impact programs, including
Discovery Corps, Lake Washington Watershed
Internship Program, Portal to the Public and
our new Proton Preschool.
LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR AND CEO

Last year, we continued to receive national
acclaim, as we were awarded highly
competitive federal grants from the National
Science Foundation and Institute of Museum
and Library Services. We also welcomed Dr.
Ann McMahon, an engineer and science
educator, as our new vice president for science
and education. And our board of directors
is currently leading a national search for the
Science Center’s next president and CEO.
All of this change adds up to an exciting time
for Pacific Science Center. None of it would
be possible without the generosity of our
community and members. Because of your
support, young people and adults from all walks
of life have more opportunities to experience—
and be inspired by—science and technology.
Thank you for your investment and
partnership.

Scientific advancements stem from a sense of wonder
and curiosity. Every day, scientists, engineers and
mathematicians imagine and explore, leading to
astonishing discoveries and achievements, from the
mathematical formulas underpinning the Great Pyramid
of Giza to NASA’s recent discovery of 715 new exoplanets
outside our solar system.
Albert Einstein once said, “Curiosity has its own
reason for existing.”
Pacific Science Center seeks to inspire a lifelong interest
in science, technology and math. Through our programs
and exhibits, we are investing in curiosity—and the
discoveries of the future.

FUTURE READY
Every investment our donors make in Pacific Science
Center is an investment in possibility. Donations go beyond
the tangible to support that which cannot be touched or
seen: an idea, a spark, a connection. Contributors to the
Future Ready campaign enabled the institution to restore
its iconic buildings, improve content and delivery through
new exhibits and renovated theaters and strengthen the
institution’s financial footing. The community’s generous
support has helped the Science Center to plan for, and
embrace, its next fifty years of serving the Puget Sound
region and state of Washington.

The renovated 321-seat theater now features
IMAX® 3D digital projection for a better and
expanded movie experience, and a concession
stand for guest convenience and comfort.
Yamasaki Courtyard
Pacific Science Center’s iconic reflecting
pools had been in need of serious repair for
many years. With campaign funding, we
restored the ponds and preserved the original
design. A new elevator and glass-covered
walkway improved accessibility to our
facilities, and a grant from the Washington
State Heritage Capital Projects Fund financed
the cleaning and caulking of the exterior
white quartz aggregate walls.

Our goal is to make sure that every person who visits
the Science Center leaves with a new thought, a deeper
understanding or even more questions. That’s because we
know that questions lead to inquiry and discovery—the heart
of any scientific endeavor.
Our 2014 programs and offerings, which included our
popular summer camps, new Teen Science Cafés, Science
On Wheels outreach and more, reached hundreds of
thousands of youth from throughout the region with new
ideas and information about science.

Summer Camps
More than 4,000 youth participated in Pacific
Science Center summer camps in 2014, a
21 percent increase from 2013. Campers
gathered at six locations in the Puget Sound
area, and new technology camps offered
hands-on experience in animation, graphic
design and coding.
Mercer Slough Environmental
Education Center
New to the Mercer Slough in 2014 was
Environmental Science Pathways, an after
school program for middle school students
that provided hands-on exploration of
environmental science, clean technology
and associated careers. Funding from The
Norcliffe Foundation provided high-tech tools
not readily available to middle or high school
students in the Puget Sound region.
Discovery Corps
In 2014, 13 new members joined Discovery
Corps, our flagship youth development
program that builds the science literacy
and leadership skills of high school students,
and exposes them to many exciting science,

opportunities. All 27 graduates of Discovery Corps’ Class of
2014 started college this fall—at Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, Stanford University, Cornell University, Columbia
University, Northwestern, University of Washington, Western
Washington University and other outstanding colleges. This
fantastic group includes 21 students of color, 16 women, 10
students who speak a language other than English at home
and seven first-generation college students.
Teen Science Cafés
Teen Science Cafés are an outgrowth of a teen-focused
Science Café program started in New Mexico, which is now
being replicated nationally. Pacific Science Center was one
of six sites chosen to join the national network and test the
model, which features a short talk by a local researcher,
discussion and a hands-on component organized and led
by teens for teens.

Washington State LASER
Washington State Leadership and Assistance for Science
Education Reform (LASER) is an award-winning program
that helps school districts implement science education
reform efforts, and sustain and build their science and
STEM programs. LASER is co-led by Pacific Science Center
and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (operated by
Battelle for the U.S. Department of Energy) in partnership
with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and
is supported by the Washington State Legislature and The
Boeing Company. In December 2013, KCTS 9 recognized
Washington State LASER for longstanding leadership in
education with the esteemed 2013 Golden Apple Award.

My career in science began when I started
volunteering at Pacific Science Center,
engaging children and adults in the science of
the very, very small. As a high school student, I
was required to perform 25 hours of community
service to graduate. By the time I donned
my graduation robe in 2006, I had happily
contributed more than 500 hours.
As a member of Discovery Corps, a youth
development program, I worked with Science
Center staff, professors from the University of
Washington, and other professional training
groups to gain skills that allowed me to
become a science interpreter.
During my senior year, I was the science
interpreter for the NanoCart, a collection of 10
activities that explained the nanoscale and what
technologies could be enabled by the precise
control of atoms and molecules.
Looking back, the skills I learned were much
more valuable than just for teaching at the
Science Center. The task of communicating
science to passing visitors, oftentimes
From Teen Volunteer to MIT Scientist By Wenhao Sun
p23
children, forced me to become fluent with techniques that make
complicated topics approachable, accessible, and applicable—
skills of immense value to any leader or communicator,
regardless of profession. These are skills that high school students
rarely get the opportunity to practice, and they had an immense
impact on my growth and development.
Pacific Science Center opened my eyes to my own eventual focus
in science. Now in the final year of a Ph.D. program in theoretical
nanoscience, I perform cutting-edge research on how crystals
form their structures at the nanoscale.
I will always be thankful to Pacific Science Center for developing
me into the person I am today, and I am thrilled that it continues
to impact the lives of teenagers, transforming them into future
leaders of their community and the world.

In Memory of Gordon Bruce Kuenster 1933–2014
Gordon served on Pacific Science Center’s board of
directors from 1983–1991, including two years as board
president. The Science Center developed many exciting
programs during his tenure on the board, including the
record-setting exhibition China: Seven Thousand Years of
Discovery. Gordon and his wife, Diane, were enthusiastic
participants in the annual Festival of the Fountains gala.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, Gordon graduated from the
Illinois Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of
Science in electrical engineering. Gordon co-founded
his first company, Pacific Electrodynamics, Inc., at the
age of 33. During his storied career he held leadership
roles in a number of science and technology companies,
including Squibb and Advanced Technology Labs.
He held multiple patents.
Gordon was a true Renaissance man. He shared his love
of problem solving with his children and grandchildren.
His kind manner and respect toward all made him well
loved by those who were fortunate enough to know him.
He is greatly missed.
