Welcometo the13thInvernessFilmFestivalFor the 13th year of our festival I decidedwewould take a look at peoplewho arebrave enough tomove away from their comfort zones and embark on an adventure, whether that be by choice or circumstance.
We open the festival with the Scottish premiere ofBrooklynwhich sees SaoirseRonan leaving her home in rural Ireland in the 1950s to begin a new life in America.Malala Yousafzai was forced to leavePakistan after being the focus of a Talibanattack after speaking out about the right for young girls to be educated, her journeytoNobel laureate is told inHeNamedMeMalala. ViggoMortensen plays a Frenchteacher in Algeria during the revolutionwith Francewho ismade to transport aMuslimprisoner across impossible terrain in the powerful Far FromMen. InPawnSacrifice a troubledBobby Fischer (TobeyMaguire) takes on themight of both ColdWar superpowers in order to challenge the best the Soviet Empire has to offer atchess, awonderful analogy of theColdWar itself. There aremany other humanjourneys in the festival too, I hope that you enjoy travellingwith them
Something a little different and a first for us is a screening that requires blindfoldsand headphones.Carnival of Souls is an experimental horror 3Dbinaural audioexperiencewhich creates a sense of intimate proximity that immerses you in thedrama. It was inspired by the experiences of blind cinemagoers and promisesto be really interesting.
As always please remember to vote for our AudienceAward.Wedon't have jury'sor committees for our Award, thewinner is completely up to you. Designed byHebrides based artist SteveDilworth, we take great pride in knowing that a littlepiece of our festival has taken up residence in all corners of the globe.
I hope that you enjoy the festival, and please do letmeknowwhat you think.
PaulMacDonald-Taylor, Festival Director
PS Youwill note that some of the screenings are certified ‘IFF’ rather than the conventional BBFC certificates. This justmeans that at the time of publication, theBBFChadn’t given the film a certificate – sowe‘vemadeour best guess. If you are unsure as to the age suitability of any screening, please ask theBoxOffice staff,or visit the Inverness FilmFestival website for up to date information.

The latest family drama from Japanesemaster Hirokazu Koreeda (I Wish, 2012Inverness FilmFestival), Our Little Sister sees the veteran director revisitingfamiliar subjects of family, love and cooking, all delivered in his tender andunderstated cinematic style.
This beautifully crafted family drama tells the story of three sisterswho livetogether in a largehouse in the city of Kamakura. When their absent father dies, they travel to the countryside for his funeral. There theymeet and take undertheir wing a teenage half-sibling they never knew.
All told, the patience of the filmmaking is pretty remarkable, a feat of embroideryslowly taking shape, and it inspires a corresponding faith in thewilling viewer –it’s an invitation to sit back and settle in for one of Koreeda’s loveliest films.

InMay 1970, SteveMcQueen, one of Hollywood’s biggest starsaswell as being arguably thecoolestman on the planet, flewto France to beginwork on thefilm thatmeantmore to himthan any other... LeMans.
He began by filming in andaround the actual race, capturing priceless footage.Visually it all looked amazingbut coming upwith a compellingnarrative around the racingaction proved to be less Steve’sthing and the production beganto encountermany difficulties.Steve hadwanted this to be thegreatest racingmovie of all time but the end result was a commercial and criticalflop and his careerwas never quite the same afterwards.
This fascinating documentary is the story of how one of themost volatile, charismatic stars of his generation, who seemingly lost somuch he held dear inthe pursuit of his dream, nevertheless followed it to the end.
