Plant genetic diversity is of fundamental importance in thecontinuity of a species as it provides the necessary adaptation tothe prevailing biotic and abiotic environmental conditions, andenables change in the genetic composition to cope with changesin the environment. Climate change leads to the concurrence of anumber of abiotic and biotic stresses, thus affecting agriculturalproductivity. Extensive crop improvement programmes are neededto address these challenges. Materials with high potential inbreeding for a changing climate need to be assembled in genebankcollections. Not only crop wild relatives (CWR) and exoticlandraces, but also useful materials resulting from various researchprojects, where genes from wild or exotic sources are integratedinto adapted material, which have resistance to biotic and abioticstresses need to be identified and assembled for use in breedingprogrammes.
Accessibility of these unique genetic resources for use bythe breeders depends upon the availibility of information andmaterial in public domain and equally important is the recoginitionof the breeder who has developed/identified the unique germplasm. To address these issues ICAR constituted Plant Germplasm
INTRODUCTION
Registration Committee (PGRC) under chairmanship of DeputyDirector General (Crop Science), to register such uniquegermplasm. The responsibility of plant germplasm was entrusted
to NBPGR by ICAR.

In 1996, detailed guidelines and proforma for registrationwas formalised and was revised time to time to incorporate newprovisions as several changes in management of plant geneticresources and related policies have taken place nationally andinternationally. A major revision in the guidelines was done in 2013to include provisions required as per the changing scenario forsubmission of application for registration, data requirement anddeposition of seed/genetic material. The revised guidelines areavailable on http://www.nbpgr.ernet.in/Downloadfile.aspx?EntryId=5764
In 2017 Germplasm Registration Information System wasdeveloped to make the entire process of germplasm registrationfrom submission of application to evaluation by experts anddecision by the Plant Germplasm Registration Committee onlineThe system is expected to provide genebank managers, breedersand plant researchers with hands –on-tool for management ofgermplasm registration process, and to policy makers with a reliablesource of information. With the advent of this system, it is expectedthat the entire process of germplasm registration is made simpleand fast. For online submmission of application log on towww.nbpgr.ernet.in/registration.

Since the start of PGRC, 37 meetings have been held. Atotal of 3,551 applications have been received and processed and1,377 potentially valuable germplasm accessions have beenregistered. Year-wise details are present on Figure 1. During 2015to 2017 a total of 405 applications were processed and 194potentially valuable germplasm belonging to 54 crop species wereregistered. Of these, 138 belonged to field crops and 49 tohorticultural crops and 7 commercial crops. In field crops, 54accesssions have been registered in wheat followed by 15 in riceand 11 in barley, reflecting the efforts put for development andidentification of useful germplasm for exploitation in geneticimprovement of these major food crops. In oilseeds and grainlegumes, 21 and 7 germplasm lines have been registeredrespectively. Special emphasis was given on the registration of oilpalm as it is an important commercial commodity. As a result 6clones of oil palm were registered.
Among the horticultural crops, maximum numbers of 12accessions have been registered in medicinal and aromatic plants
mainly ashwagandha, senna and stevia. Numbers of accessionsregistered in vegetables and tuber crops were 11 and 9 respectively.Figure 2. Presents the details of unique plant germplasm registeredduring 2015 to 2017. It reflects the domination of cereals, oilseedsand fiber and forages among the field crops. In this bulletin, comprehensive information about the germplasm registered during2015-2017 is presented in a consolidated form to bring thisinformation in public domain and to promote its use in cropimprovement programmes at National level. The tablulatedinformation presented in the following pages lists all registeredgermplasm accessions with passport information and briefdescription of their unique features which were registered during2015-2017. The purpose of this publication is to document theinformation on registered plant germplasm so that the informationis available in public domain for utilization trait-specific germplasmby plant breeders in National Agricultural Research System of India.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The editors of the bulletin would like to express their sincere thanks and indebtedness to Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary,
Department of Agricultural Research and Education and Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), for
encouraging the activities of Plant Germplasm Registration Committee for registration of unique germplasm and to encourage the
breedres to use the same in crop improvement programmes. Thanks are also due to Dr AK Singh, Deputy Director General (Crop
Science), ICAR and the Chairman of the Committee for recognizing and re-emphasizing the importance of this mechanism by
holding the PGRC meetings. We are also thankful to Dr DK Yadava, Assistant Director General (Seeds) and Dr IS Solanki,
Assistant Director General (F&FC) for providing their valuable inputs and guidance. Thanks are also due to Dr Kuldeep Singh,
Director, ICAR-NBPGR for guidance and encouragement. Significant contributions by experts and reviewers for their valuable
