JESSIE MACWILLIAMS1) born in 1917 in England2) received her BA in 1938 and her MA the following
year - both from Cambridge University3) 1939, received traveling scholarship from
Cambridge - went to Johns Hopkins University4) 1940, went to Harvard University - study for a year5) married in 1941, left her mathematical work for
some years - raise her three children (one daughter and two sons)
JESSIE MACWILLIAMS1) 1955 - became programmer - learned coding theory 2) Although did major research at Bell Labs3) turned down - promotion for mathematics research
position 4) she received a Ph.D5) completed her PhD after returning to Harvard - one
more year (1961-1962). 6) MacWilliams retired from Bell Labs in January 1983
and died in May 1990
