More than 300 U.S.-flag merchantships from 27 companies are enrolled inthe Propeller Club Adopt-A-Ship Fleetfor the current school year, according toNeal L. Harrington, national presidentof the organization.

The program has been sponsored bythe Propeller Club for more than 40years. Under the program, Americanships are "adopted" by grade schoolclasses each year. The classes andmasters of the ships exchange cor-respondence. The pupils, supervised bytheir teachers, ask questions about theships and crews, cargoes carried andcountries visited.

Captains and other officers send in-formation regarding ships, trade routes, climate, weather, geography andhistory, and origins of cargoes. Classesoften are able to visit their "adopted"ships when they are in port. Captainsfrequently visit the classes. Most statesare represented in the program.

The role of the American business community in the formulation and im-plementation of U.S. foreign policy is complex. To help understand thisrole, senior policy-making public officials, members of the media andprivate sector representatives from various foreign countries participate ina seminar and study the interaction between the business community andlocal, state and federal agencies. Tufts University Fletcher School of Law

Freighter cruising enjoyable way to travelContinued from Page 7

officers swapped tales of anchoredships that had been boarded and rob-bed by pirates. Passengers were told tokeep their doors locked. A guard wasposted at the gangway, which waslowered only for officials or for thelaunch hired to operate between theship and the dock.

On deck after dinner the passengerslearned why they had anchored ratherthan docking. The berth designated forthe ship was still occupied by the M/VCIUDAD DE BOGOTA of Gran-colombiana Line which was afire. Shewas smoking and a tug was pouringwater into her hold. Tuesday morning, the fire appeared to be out but theship was listing precariously to port.Nevertheless, the launch, which took

us to the dock for an excursion intoCartagena, passed right under the bowof the unfortunate vessel. We made it,anyway, and rode into the city in 10or 15 minutes.

Cartagena was founded in 1533,just 41 years after Columbusdiscovered America. The city, probablythe most important Caribbean resort inSouth America, has a rich history. Itwas through Cartagena that the Con-quistadors moved gold and gems fromthe New World, thus attracting piratesand freebooters. Fortifications werebuilt beginning in the middle 1600s.

The Old City looks much as it did incolonial days, with white buildings andnarrow streets behind a wall that is upto 10 feet thick. The New City, builton a sand spit between the Caribbeanand the bay, looked like Miami Beachfrom the deck of the JAMES LYKES.

We bought a copy of the Sundayedition of the Miami Herald at theCartegena Hilton. After being outof touch, except for the captain’ssometimes colorful bulletins, forseveral days we and the otherpassengers were hungry for news. Thepaper made us very popular with bothpassengers and officers.

All eight passengers toured the

city in a small bus in the afternoon. We visited La Popa monastery, built inthe late 1500s some 500 feet above thecity; San Felipe Fortress from whichDon Blas de Lezo defended Cartagenaagainst a huge English fleet for almostthree months during 1741; thedungeons which are now a pleasanttourist shopping area; San PedroClaver Church, which is named inhonor of a Spanish nobleman whogave up his wealth to help the Negroslaves being brought to the newWorld; and the shopping area of theNew City.

Colombia is known for its emeralds. However, the gems and mosteverything else were priced in accor-dance with Cartagena’s stature as aresort. Bargains were few. The bustour cost $12 apiece and a mealfor two in a good restaurant amountedto more than $40.

Early Wednesday, the ship moved tothe dock. Discharging of cargo hadtaken place during Tuesday, too, as abarge was used to carry drums off theanchored ship.

Longshoremen swarmed over theship once it was docked and it waseasy to see why locked doors were ad-vised. The unloading work began, thenhalted as a work stoppage was called. The men soon went back to work inthe tropical sun. The captain reportedthat his home office was trying todecide whether to load some con-tainers and handle them twice in Bar-ranquilla (at extra cost) or to make second call at Cartagena.

After midnight, early Thursday, theship sailed for Barranquilla with thecontainers aboard.

The ship turned into the RioMagdalena at midmorning. The riverwas so brown, it looked like it couldbe used as a footpath to the industrialcity of 2 million.

As the JAMES LYKES movedupstream, clearings began to appear onthe east bank, then thatch-roofedsheds. Closer to the city, the clearingshad been cultivated into neat rows of

vegetables that farmers were irrigatingwith buckets of water carried onyokes. Mosquito netting could be seeninside the sheds, which have no elec-tricity or water and seemed to have noaccess other than the river.

The outskirts of Barranquillalooked like Pittsburgh before pollutioncontrols.

Though it was a long walk to thegate and a taxi and it was very hot, wewent to town briefly to shop. Theroute passes through a garbage dumpwhere cattle were foraging andvultures were sitting on light stan-dards, so we only went to townonce.

The ship sailed Friday for Panamaand the last leg of our personalvoyage, which was scheduled to end inBalboa on the Pacific. On the last dayin the blue Caribbean, we rose earlyand saw porpoises again.

Rain threatened or fell most of theday. We pulled into the anchorage onthe Atlantic end of the Panama Canalbefore noon Saturday, moving insidethe breakwater just after a shark’s finhad been spotted astern.

The trip through the PanamaCanal began in early afternoon andended about 10 p.m. Saturday whenthe JAMES LYKES docked in Balboa.(See accompanying article). We left thethe ship early Sunday and flew toHouston, unfortunately missinga chance to take the $1.50 trans-isthmian train ride.

Lykes accepts bookings for one-waypassengers to any specific port. In ad-dition to the West Coast/SouthAmerica route, the company offersvoyages to Africa, the Orient and theMediterranean.

Other cargo lines which offerpassenger service include AmericanPresident Lines, Bank Line, DeltaSteamship Line, Nauru Pacific Lineand Polish Ocean Lines.

If they are all as pleasant as ourswas, a cruise on any of them should bewell worthwhile. []
