Report on Assessment of Soil Strata Conditions and Recommendations for the Foundations of various Academic Block Structures of IIM,
Tiruchirappalli
I. INTRODUCTION
On a request from IIM Trichy, vide letter no. IIMT/Soil Test/2013-14, dated 23rd
September 2013, the undersigned have taken up the necessary Geotechnical Investigation and
recommend the foundations of the buildings. The field work for the testing was entrusted to
M/s Shakthi Developments Co., Chennai. The work was executed as per the specifications
provided by the undersigned and under the supervision of the undersigned. The work of field
testing was completed on 7th February and the laboratory testing of the soil sample was
completed at NIT Trichy.
The site was jointly inspected by the undersigned along with the officials of IIM prior to
the investigation and accordingly the locations for various tests were identified. Detailed
laboratory testing on the selected soil samples were carried out at the Geotechnical
Engineering laboratory at NIT, Trichy. The field test data have been submitted by M/s
Shakthi Developments Co., Chennai and the laboratory test results have been compiled by
NIT Trichy.
This report summarizes the site conditions, Geotechnical data, nature of structures and
recommendations for the foundations.

II. INVESTIGATIONS CARRIED OUT
Following field tests were carried out by M/s Shakthi Developments Co., Chennai.
1. Drilling of 150mm diameter borehole with rotary drill at 19 different locations to a
depth of 10m/15m from the existing ground level.
2. Conducting standard penetration test in bore holes at every meter depth interval.
3. Plate load tests, five numbers at depths varying from 1.0 to 1.5m.
4. Electrical resistivity survey at selected locations.
5. Collection of disturbed and undisturbed samples for necessary laboratory tests.
All the above field tests were carried out conforming to the requirements in IS:1892 and other
relevant codes. Selected laboratory tests carried out NIT Trichy are given below:
1. Moisture content
2. Dry unit weight
3. Specific Gravity
4. Sieve analysis
5. Free swell index
6. IS classification based on above tests
7. Shear strength by direct shear
8. Unconfined compression test
9. Optimum moisture content and Proctor density tests
10. California Bearing Ratio Test
11. Point load strength index test
12. Chemical Analysis of soils
4
III. SITE CONDITIONS
The site is fairly dry with little vegetation and having undulation up to 2m which will
require marginal cutting and filling, if uniform level for all the units is desired. The site has
higher elevation near the main entrance on west side and slopping downwards to North-East
side. No water table is noticed in any of the boreholes up to the explored depth of 15m. There
is a natural drain running through the site from South-west corner towards the North-east
leading to a lake about 500m away.
The strata comprises of red soil with fine sand at surface with depth varying from
0.3m to 2.5m followed by a soft disintegrated rock. This strata is competent to support
individual footings for the proposed structures and no pile foundation is envisaged. Also, the
nature of the strata is such that excavation of the foundation pits can be made without any
shoring or dewatering. However, it is advisable to complete the foundation execution before
the monsoon.
IV. DETAILS OF STRUCTURES PROPOSED
The site area is approximately 1sq.km having two entrances, one from the main road and
second entrance from the side road. The site is behind the Bharathidasan University. The
major facilities can be divided into following groups:
1. Shopping complex (B1, B19)
2. Overhead tank (B2)
3. Auditorium (B3)
4. Administration Building (B4, B5, PLT1, PLT2)
5. Academic block (B6, B8, B9)
6. Library (B7, PLT3)
7. Hostels (B10-B14)
8. Quarters (B15-B18)
5
All the structures are RCC frame structures with ground + two floors. The loading
intensity expected is within 200-400 kN/m². The natural ground level has large variations
from 98.5m near the main road and sloping downward towards the north eastern side to an
elevation of 89m. The slope is gently and mostly uniform. In a joint meeting with the
architects, it was decided not to have any uniform site grading over the entire area. Instead
the ground levels may have variations for individual buildings. This will minimize the earth
work required for cutting and filling.
The structures listed above are divided into two categories based on the loading
intensity anticipated as given below:
A. Heavy structures with large column spacing and larger column loads
Following structures are considered in this category:
1. Auditorium
2. Library
3. Administration building
4. Hostels
5. Mess hall
6. Sport campus
7. Non-faculty apartments
8. Food court
Above structures are expected to have ground + three floors with high column loads
depending on the column spacing. It is therefore preferable to support these structures on the
soft disintegrated rock which is available at shallow depth of 2.0 to 2.5 m.
B. Light Structures
Following structures are considered in this category:
1. Academic block
6
2. Faculty quarters
3. Commercial complex
4. School
5. Estate office
Above structures will have only ground + one floor and the column load is expected to be
less compared to the structures in category A above. The loading intensity for these structures
can be within 150kN/m².
V. FOUNDATIONS RECOMMENDATIONS
A. General Recommendations
Following general recommendations shall be exercised during the execution of the
foundation works:
1. To the extent possible, foundation execution shall be avoided during rains.
2. The foundations excavation shall not be exposed for a longer duration. The
construction of foundation shall be taken up immediately after excavation has been
completed.
3. The founding strata shall be verified by a Geotechnical engineer to ensure that the
strata is conforming to the above recommendations.
4. The excavated material shall be stacked away from the excavation face by at least 2
to 3m.
5. The material shall be stacked separately, layer wise so that the same can be reused
appropriately for the construction.
6. The surface clay soil (blackish) is not suitable for back filling of foundations as well
as for plinth filling. Material from this layer shall be used only for leveling the low-
lying area where no structure is coming up.
7
7. The soft disintegrated rock when excavated is suitable for both foundation back
filling as well as for plinth filling.
8. The back filling/plinth filling shall be carried out in layers not exceeding 200mm in
thickness and compacted to 95% Proctor density by suitable compaction technique.
Flooding with water shall not be used for compacting.
9. The CBR test carried out on the soil from the surface layer, which comprise of
clayey sand with silt, indicates very poor values. This layer is therefore not suitable
to support the pavenment. Along the road alignment, the surface layer (clayey sand)
shall be excavated over the width of the road and to a minimum depth of 500mm
below the surface. Depending on the thickness of pavement, the excavation shall be
back filled using the excavated soft disintegrated rock or any other select granular
material.
10. It is noticed that there is a natural drain passing through the site in the North-South
direction. The architects have confirmed that alignment. However, the drain shall be
desilted and made of uniform cross section for smooth flow and to prevent overflow
during monsoon. Brick lining or stone pitching may be adopted so that the
maintenance of the drain is easy.
11. The chemical analysis on selected soil samples show that the value of sulphates and
chlorides are well within the limit. Therefore, OPC or PPC can be used for
foundation concrete. Generally, when sulphates exceed 0.2% in soil, caution is
warranted in the design of concrete. IS 456/BS 8110 provides typical values for
various types of concrete.
B. Foundation Recommendations
1. For the structures under category A mentioned above, the foundation shall be a
minimum depth of 2.5m from the finished ground level and at least 0.3m below the
soft disintegrated rock (SDR). The safe bearing capacity for these foundations shall be
taken as 300kN/m² for maximum size of 4.0m width foundations. In case if SDR is
not meet with, even after 2.5m depth, the foundation shall be excavated further till
SDR is met with and shall be back filled with selected cohesionless soil with top level
2.5m below FGL to continue with foundation construction. The settlement anticipated
