What is an Incubator?
An incubator is a business support process designed to assist start-up and emerging businesses.
While emphasis is on providing flexible space for tenants, business support via coaching, access
to financing and a host of other services are available. The SIUC Small usiness Incubator
provides traditional incubation support services and no! includes affiliate and shared e"uipment
lab support.
What is Incubation?
According to the #ational usiness Incubation Association, business incubation is a d$namic
process of business enterprise development. An incubator is an organi%ation that is set up to
help foster business enterprise development. Incubators help $oung firms get started and survive
at times !hen the$ are most vulnerable.
The primar$ goal of a business incubator is to produce successful businesses that graduate into
the region. The$ offer shared services, access to e"uipment, flexible leases, and expandable
space. &an$ incubators are located near other services that are valuable to an incubating
business. 'or example, the SIUC usiness Incubator (rogram has the )ffice of *conomic and
+egional evelopment, the Illinois Small usiness evelopment and International Trade Center,
and the Illinois &anufacturing *xtension Center housed in the unn-+ichmond *conomic
evelopment Center.

Incubator. It !ill allo! entrepreneurs and small businesses to utili%e all the resources available
!ithin the unn-+ichmond *conomic evelopment Center !ithout re"uiring tenanc$. All affiliate

Small Business Development Centers
Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs)provide assistance to small
businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs throughout the United States and its
territories. SBDCs help entrepreneurs realize the dream of business ownership
and help existing businesses remain competitive in a complex ever!changing
