Overview of IELTS Listening TestIELTS Listening has 4 sections, each with 10 questions.

Each question is worth 1 point.

The test is made so that the answers appear in order.

During the test, there is time to write down and check your answers.

Answers are written on the question paper as you listen.

After the CD ends, you have 10 minutes to transfer your answers onto the answer sheet.

Listening TextsThe first 2 sections are about social needs. There is a dialogue between 2 speakers.

For example it may be a conversation about taking a trip. Next, there is a monologue, for example a recording about museum opening times.Section 3 and 4 are are more educational. There can be up to 4 people talking so it

can be difficult to hear all the voices. For example it may be a conversation between a student and his professor about homework. Section 4 is usually a recorded lecture like a podcast.

Each section is played only once. The recordings include different accents like

British, American, Australian, New Zealand, South African, Indian, Jamaican, Filipino, and Irish.

What are the topics?Sections 1 and 2 test the types of listening skills

needed for basic survival in an English speaking country. So they are usually about accommodation (living), transportation (going around), entertainment, health, or shopping.

Do the different sections use different task types?No, the task types (like finish the sentence or

multiple choice) are chosen randomly.

Are all of the sections equally difficult?No. The sections start easy and get more difficult.

So section 4 is the most difficult.

How do you record your answer?You will get a special paper called a Listening

Question Paper during the test. Write down your answers there and later transfer them to the back part of the test called the Answer Sheet.

Will I lose points if the test said NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS, even if one of my words is 'a' or 'the' ?

Yes. Answers which exceed the word limit will be marked incorrect.

How about spelling?Yes. Of course the wrong spelling of a word will

lose you points. You can use US or UK spelling.

Do I have time to read the questions before I have to listen?

Yes. There is a few minutes to read the questions before it is time to listen.

How many times can we listen to the recording?Only once.

We will do a model listening test. So I want you to get familiar with the IELTS Listening style.

Assignments:You will have 1 listening and 1 speaking homework every week.

1. Listening homework

You will listen to the CD at home and report on it the next class. You will talk about what you listened to and I will ask you questions.

2. Speaking homework

You will prepare a short 3 minute speech about a topic that I give you every week. You will talk about it in class and I will ask you questions

3. Speaking homework 2

You must give a talk in front of the whole class every 2 weeks.

Homework 1:

Speaking: Stage 2 p.109 (green book) Describe a city you visited

I will speak to students 1 on 1 for 2-3 minutes. This is stage 2 so I will not ask any questions, I will just listen. I will check for grammar and pronunciation problems. Use 5 new words.

Homework

Format:– For listening homework, write your answer. Then check the answer in the back

of the book. Write the correct answer in red ink.– For your 1.5 minute speech I want you to type it, print it, and bring a copy to me

in class.– Practice your speaking homework before class

Points:

Class attendance – 10% student can miss only 1 class. 2 lates = 1 absence

Coursework – 50% :participation – 10%speaking homework – 10% listening homework – 10%speaking test – 10% (week 5)listening test – 10% (week 5)
